This displeases Count Bleck.

The news of this "rule" barely makes any sense. When and how are the obvious exceptions made? Doesn't seem too matter much since it's clearly taking part in ruining the chance for real creativity to blossom in the making of this series.

I still think Origami King looks really fun to play, but Tanabe really just needs to shut the **** up. Everytime he opens his mouth, he always kills hype somehow. Man can't advertise for ****.

I can see the appeal of Paper Mario but it really needs a kick up for the series to get more people like myself to buy. I haven't played it but the first two games I've been wanting to get for years.

And Origami King just doesn't looks like much of a step away from Colour Splash and Sticker Star. If anything it was like the series folded back a bit, no pun intended.

I’m gonna be blunt, I legitimately don’t want the series to continue if this is how they plan on treating it.

A genuine question:
What’s the appeal to Paper Mario? Is it a fun puzzle game? Strategy? I just don’t get the appeal, probably since it’s hard to tell what it even is.
I’m just gonna link the tvtropes page since I don’t have much time atm. Has some good points about its appeal.

Anyway, for those curious on what people who played the game think of it, it's considered to be better than the last two by a margin, but it's still flawed. Many enjoyed the fleshed out world, humor, characters, and many said the battle system is satisfying when things go your way. The cons are the lack of XP, and the Vellumetal (not Legions of Stationary) bosses.

It seems to be the most... balanced(?) of the bunch.

Thanks! I’ll give it a read.
I never played them and tbf TOK seems to be wellwritten, but the games have gotten significantly less creative with the Mario mythos and stuff since Sticker Star
Huh. I see.
So do you think they’re milking the franchise? Or just bad at making genuine non-milky sequels?

$15 is a steal tbh and I figured why not while I have the money.

Now where were we again?

Yeah I can second this. Game has it's flaws but at least it tries..? Maybe not hard enough but my god the origami aesthetic they nailed hard. Haven't watched too much gameplay yet so can't really comment on the story or anything.

No, it's that spinoffs are no longer allowed to take creative liberties with the Mario IP despite how beloved those liberties were. The best example is how all the NPCs in Paper Mario are regular Toads and how enemies like fat Hammer Bros in M&L became the standard Hammer Bro designs in later games

For me though. Tonight it's here at long last.

My most anticipated game is coming out. A game I've dreamed since I was about 16. A triple A open world Samurai game based on one of my favourite periods of history.

I know some of you guys probably don't really want to hear it in the midst of this Paper Mario talk but I'm super excited.

Paper Mario I don't have much to say expect.

Wouldn't mind this on the Switch.

I would love to give Ghost Of Tsushima a try if I had the money.

Sadly I currently only have around 8€ and I'm saving my money for Persona 5 so It will have to wait alongside many others such as DMC5.

At least I can emulate old games on my phone.

So Nintendo is just super strict on what you do with the Mario characters?
I’m curious as to how Peachette even exists then.
Im not saying you’re wrong, I believe you, but I think it’s weird

Peachette's in a mainline game.

They don't want to give the license to companies like Intelligent System or Alpha-RIP and have them make their own OCs.

The more I thinka bout it, the more I realize how much Origame King contradicts Tanabe's philosophy.

"Can't modify Mario enemies" - the main enemies are modified Mario enemies
"Removed Story" - Game where the plot isn't Bowser trying to take over the world by some new fangled device
"Casualfied battles" - Game where they got rid of the consumable attacks and game breaking Things, and brought back the classic item and badge system

Did Tanabe even PLAY his own game?

I get where they're coming from.

Like, for example, Mickey Mouse is Disney's icon, so they obviously wouldn't want to have another company start making up their own OCs in regards to Mickey Mouse and friends....

But then I realize ****ing Kingdom Hearts is a thing and how the hell is Disney more loose than Nintendo.

Lmao, I really didn’t think about that.
I don’t see why they’re so strict about it though.
Let them change up a few enemies, it’s supposed to be fun.

There was this part in SuperStar Saga which I just got through where you had to play this sort of jump the rope game to get past the borderline of the villain's country or something.

Kinda frustrating at first but I slowly managed to get through It.

Does Nintendo even follow their own rule on that, because this is the same company who just straight up lent Zelda to an indie company.

Judging by his former projects, Tanabe knows how to handle fan feedback, people didn't like stuff about LM2, Prime 2, DKCR, he saw those criticisms and chose to fix them, so it's just weird how dedicated he is to keeping the NPCs of Paper Mario as just generic Toads

Yeah, I don't get why Tanabe (And Alphadead lately) acts like Toads are the only friendly NPC in the Mario universe when that has never been true.

Even in the latest Paper Mario games there have been a quite a bit of friendly enemy NPCs (OK straight up has a town full of friendly Snifits), so idk why they always hype up the Toads as being the only friendly companions Mario has ever had when their own games contradict that.

The best explanation is that Mario Quality Assurance commitee meddling with any and all creative liberties, how else would 2 different spinoffs known for their liberties just suddenly stop with all of that after their third installments

On the Switch
During COVID

The chance of it failing are dangerously slim. Everything's pretty much lined up for it being a success, even on a smaller scale.

What does the moustache skill do in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga? Tempted to upgrade It but I fear the possibility of It being a beginner's trap or something.

Gonna tag Shroob Shroob as his pfp makes me feel he has played the games.

If there really is a "Mario Quality Assurance" panel, then they are doing the absolute worst job at enforcing their own rules. Even Sticker Star had a friendly enemy (with a series record low of 1).

It's mostly designs I think, look at the unique takes on Mario enemies those earlier PM and M&L installments had and how they all got removed starting from the 3DS era

Dream Team was fine for the most part in that regard, but Paper Jam definitely broke the camels back.

God did they drop the ball to the center of the earth with that "crossover"

Question. If there was a multi-company crossover title celebrating PlatinumGames and it’s history, how far back do you go? Do you include the stuff from their time as Clover Studios and Team Little Devils? What about Resident Evil?

To be fair, apparently there was an insider dude on ResetEra saying stuff about why Waluigi is only in spinoffs, but idk, these other characters do seem to go against that however they really are just generic enemies with accessories, though I guess Kooper and Koops should be allowed too then...
