Paper Mario: Origami King is sitting at a healthy 81 on Metacritic with 50 reviews in.

In comparison, Color Splash and Sticker Star didn't reach 80. The next ranked game, Super Paper Mario, is at an 85.

Still really doesn't interest me in the slightest, but at least it seems 'better'.

I mean an 80 is really good for Metacritic. All things said and done even if Paper Mario is no longer an RPG at least the games are still recognizably good. It’s just moved away from it’s RPG roots and while that’s a shame, like I said, at least the games are still good.

Like, I know traditional Mario RPGs are dead now but, **** sucks.
A cold place in my heart thinks that after Nintendo worked AlphaDream literally to death pumping out only remakes for four years straight, they saw Alpha Dream's decline and bankruptcy as a magic sign that the Mario RPG has lost its relevance and profitability.

You know the meme where Andre shoots Hannibal? :nifty: That explains itself.

I can’t say anything about OK yet but I don’t think CS and especially SS are good games regardless of the Paper Mario branding. There’s a lot of problems I have with those games that go beyond the RPG departure.

Unpopular opinion but I usually play RPG’s for the story and characters and, although Mario RPG’s have had interesting stories and characters, Mario never has been and never will be my go to for an RPG game.

I enjoyed PM64, TTYD, SPM, and even SMRPG but I wasn’t blown away by any of them in any way. So I guess I’m kinda indifferent to Paper Mario ever going back to its RPG roots.

When they remade Superstar Saga I thought "OK, that's cool". And when they hit Partners in Time the literal next year, I already knew **** was going south. By the time they redid BiS for whatever godforsaken reason, that was just the nail in the coffin.

EDIT: Apparently they didn't remake PiT even though I swore they did. Whoops.

I swear if Miyamoto doesn't keep Pikmin vaguely alive by his sheer willpower alone it'd be rotting in its grave with Chibi-Robo and AlphaDream.

Story-wise, SPM remains my favorite Mario RPG.

Mario doesn't get great lore very often, but Rosalina's backstory was something truly special and beautiful. And in my humble opinion, SPM's storyline blows it out of the water.

I'm more just disappointed the game exists at all tbh.

Like, I know traditional Mario RPGs are dead now but, **** sucks.
Honestly, that's more of a bias issue, in that you (among others) were biased against the game from the get go, as in, even if the game got a perfect score, there would still be disappointment regardless.

But my post was more geared torward the caustiously optimistic if anything (such as myself).

Quick note: If you were expecting a more classical Mario RPG, that's fine and all, nit saying you're wrong.

I’m gonna try to give the game a fair shake despite my grievances towards its conception and experiences with what came before it. I can’t guarantee I’ll be totally unbiased. I’ll try to work on my own Paper Mario game ideas in the meantime.

Also, let's be 100% real here: Paper Mario hasn't been a traditional RPG since Super. Ever since that game, Paper Mario has became more of the adventure and story over the battling. Like, notice how when bringing up Super, everyone talks about the story and artsyle, but not how the game actually plays or how the Pixls are by far the lamest partners the series ever had. Nobody wants to admit that that was the game where some of the major characters became more one note (the Pixls) and the gameplay has became simplified (and in some instances, repetitive and boring), because that would mean admiting that some of the series issues didn't start with Sticker Star or Miyamoto, which you know, are the common scapegoats of the franchise.

Yeah, they skipped Partners in time entirely and jumped right to Bowser's Inside Story.
On a system that could still play the game.

Still one of the most mind boggling bad decisions Nintendo has made. Should have been on switch, it would have a chance then.

There's some weird stuff going about surrounding Geno right now, some GameStop employee said stuff in either an interview or a podcast and people think she revealed Geno accidentally or something. I don't buy it because then the chick would just be outed as either a time traveller or ignorant.

You're telling me that some random ass Gamestop employee somehow leaked Geno.

I actually liked the gameplay as well. It was different but felt in tune with the series still. The flipping dimensions idea was a unique edition too. Pixis were alright, but literally the rest of the cast had a lot of different character traits so it made up for it.
As for repetitive or boring, it comes down to personal tastes I think. But I didn’t mind it, however I play a lot of rpgs so gameplay being the same each time doesn’t really get to me.

Sticker Star is what really killed combat for me. It was use a real life object and win and drained more of the color from the franchise then Color Splash did with a plot about draining color lol.

She said, "There's a reason why people were freaking out when Geno got announced for Smash!" when discussing how big of a game the Mario RPGs were in general, specifically her SNES SMRPG segment.

So, yes. :215: Again, I don't buy it, but others definitely are.

I personally don't buy it either, since they could be talking about the time when Geno got his/her/its Mii Costume back in Smash 4.

Well I didn’t see that, but I did see that Papa Genos has a source that he trusts that believes Geno is coming. At least I saw that going around discord yesterday.

I mean some of the reasons I can forgive SPM over Sticker Star is cause SPM didn’t try to hide the fact that is was a platformer and while simplified, I think the gameplay is much more competent than in SS. SS is obtuse and cryptic as ****. I don’t think I’ve ever needed a guide on SPM whereas I couldn’t even complete SS without one. I think SPM makes less mistakes than SS. The Pixls has potential but definitely could’ve been handled better.

I actually liked the Flip aspect as well, but I really wish they did more with it, like let other characters use it as well, as well as opening up level design to be much more than what they did.

I agree on some characters being well written (the Villians and Tippi), but the main partners were just ugh. Dropped the ball hard on them.

Now, oddly enough, on the whole Sticker Star aspect, I feel like Origami King actually kinda did the whole real world object thing right, in that instead of the whole real world objects are now here with no explanation, they're weapons of mass destruction that obviously don't belong in their world. It's intergrated in the story much better imo.

This is what I'm assuming too.

It would be incredibly weird for her to talk about Geno fans reacting to an event that they didn't even get to see and react too...
