On a personal level Mega Man, but overall? Cloud I think had the most impact on the whole world's fans, not just primarily one region. And unlike Mega Man and Simon, both of which were really hype, still "made sense".
Sonic, because tbh, I really don't know any other 3rd character that well until they got into Smash, with Pac-Man and Ryu being the exception.
Do they have an actual source on that?

Which version are you playing?
I still have to beat Gruntilda. Then I’m gonna play Tooie. Then Nuts & Bolts (it’s on Rare Replay. I might as well). Then end off with Yooka-Laylee.
What level are you at right now. I actually prefer the later levels in that game.
I hate it more on the basis of it being the third level as it’s such a difficulty spike there. Swimming controls aren’t the best but they become more tolerable when you get a grasp on quick turning combined with holding down the swim button.

Yeah the difficulty spikes there mixed with the the new swimming controls make that level just frustrating to me.
