IMO, that second poster proves that in the right circumstances with a few small tweaks, that design could have worked.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles will have a film version released before it's ever rereleased on a console again.
No, it'll be "Sonic 3", then a separate movie called "Sonic & Knuckles" and then a super 4 hour edit will come out called "Sonic 3 & Knuckles"

The fourth generation of consoles was the era of peripherals. We have fitness boards today? PFFT!!! That's nothing!!! Try cameras, console upgrades, Game Boy compatibility, cheat devices, the pre-internet equivalent of DLC, super scopes, turbo controllers and even ****ing printers

Back in the day, the only way to upgrade the features of a console was with bulky attachments. The Genesis/Mega Drive, for example, had things such as the Sega CD that attaches to the underside to allow it to play games from CDs and the 32x that attaches to the cartridge slot to upgrade it to a 32 bit system (and, there actually are games that use both the Sega CD and 32x!) Then, some cartridges include a pass through to allow them to enhance games placed on top of them, such as the Game Genie for cheat codes and Sonic & Knuckles, which enhances or modifies either Sonic 2 or 3 when placed on top (Knuckles becomes playable in Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 and S&K get merged together into a single huge game.) And, IDK what most of the other things are. I’m pretty sure the thing on top of the SNES stack is a Super Game Boy, for playing GB games on a TV.
I like this a lot more than I should.
Sonic & Knuckles had Lock-on technology. It was SEGA's way of making up for the fact that the developers could not meet the deadline for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
