Which isn't saying much. They would forget to draw Tenshinhan in frame of a wide-shot with everyone standing together.

This is pure contempt for the character. :dazwa:

The training on Kami's palace is the closest we're gonna get I suppose.

Ok, honest question, do you have all these DB pictures saved on your phone, or are you a massive DB fan that you can pinpoint trivia, moments, and interesting facts surrounding it off the top of your head?

Because you seem to know everything DB related

It's a damn shame Z didn't come out. I enjoyed the Kalos region and I was hoping Z would fix XY just like how Platinum fixed Diamond/Pearl.
I feel like the biggest problems in XY could so easily be fixed:

-story that isn’t pants on head stupid
-better performance
-postgame areas to explore with Gym/E4 rematches
-include Mega Evolutions from ORAS and integrate them into the story better
-rebalance difficulty so it isn’t stupid easy
-keep the interruptions by the annoying friend NPCs to a minimum

Do these and Z is one of the best Pokemon games.

Not that they aren't fun or serviceable games, but as far as I'm concerned Pokemon has been behind the curve for a while now, yet able to stay successful because it's Pokemon. It was also easier to hide the shortcomings when the expectation is that of a "portable game", but now, on console, the cracks are becoming more apparent to people.

Of course the internet took everything to an extreme, as it is wont to do, but imo Pokemon has had issues with currency for a while.

Part of me is hopeful that this might have been the wake-up call that TPC and Game Freak needed. But the game is probably gonna sell anyways and they won't care about the critiques once the game gives them millions of dollars.

The problem is it’s actively regressing from portable games. A 60 dollar Switch game has a significantly smaller region and less trainers to battle than a DS game like Platinum or Black/White 2. That’s not getting into GameFreak thinking kids are idiots and needing things handed to them.

My biggest fear is we get the NatDex back but all the other problems stay the same.

The catching tutorial at least gets skipped entirely if you already catch something from what I'm told

Uh...

Those are just from my Imgur account. The Super screenshot was from 2 years ago when I was...complaining about Tenshinhan whad'ya know?

And speaking of fights that surprisingly never happened we never got Tenshinhan vs. Krillin.

They sparred in Dragon Ball and sparred in Z but that's about it.

Alright, I'm home now, with Pokemon Sword in hand, and the very first thing I notice is that on the back of the box, it reads, "You can battle to be the best!".

Thank you for giving me permission to battle to be the best. Moving on.

That’s good but

the Elite Four replacement heals you between battles

Which is a pretty big disappointment for me.

The thing is, when you've got a lot of catching up to do, you take some time behind the scenes to progress and catch up to where you need to, putting releases on ice for a bit until you can provide a product worthy of its time. This is what Nintendo would do with any of its other series.

But GF/TPC have a degree of autonomy that the others don't, and seem intent on annual or near-annual releases. It's understandable, given the profit they stand to make, but it leaves them catching up incrementally, which makes each new instalment a little closer to where it needs to be, but still obviously behind the curve. The shortcomings are just that more apparent. You can only do that so many times before it starts to hurt the brand.

And those games were where they needed to be for portable games around a decade ago. But they were still largely derivative of past Pokemon titles, and although quality, I remember when B/W came out people were already questioning if Pokemon was stagnating in terms of where they needed to be from a technical standpoint. In the years since, they've really seemed to advance slowly and more out of necessity than ambition.

Well, SWSH will probably dethrone it as my least favorite mainline Pokemon title, so it has that going for it.

I think XY’s problems are pretty self evident but I was forgiving at the time because of the transition to 3D and I was confident Z was coming to fix the game’s problems.

(Narrator: it didn’t.)
I know they’ve given up on enhanced third titles opting for sequels instead. But what would a third version for Sword and Sheild even be? Pokémon Gun?

I think Pokemon has regressed since entering 3D, and has since stagnated. This isn’t a new problem, back in the day I heard a lot of similar complaints about Diamond and Pearl as I do to X and Y now. I think the problem is that since Pokemon has largely abandoned the “base game is light content, third game/sequel builds upon it” formula, it’s made just how lacking in content a lot of recent Pokemon games are. Even remakes like ORAS feel incredibly bare-bones compared to something like HGSS. I’m not sure if there’s any specific reason, or if it’s just the time limit on the devs catching up to them now that they’re working in a 3D environment.

Yes.

Something based on Eternatus probably.

Third versions are done though. If we get anything (big if) it will be Giga Sword and Giga Shield.

...Blizzard is selling a download code in a box as the "physical" version?

What. The. ****.
The same thing goes for Bethesda with Wolfenstein Youngblood. (but, as far as I know, only with the Switch version) Here's hoping they don't pull that garbage with Doom: Eternal - I buy physical games to save space on my system's storage, so having a box with a digital code defeats the purpose.

It’s not just content but the way the regions are designed. Gone are the days of a complex, interconnected region like Sinnoh. Dungeons are basically gone now. This started with Unova but has only gotten worse over time. USUM is still an underwhelming revision compared to games like Platinum and doesn’t entirely fix the problems with the region.

I would say vanilla Black/White are a perfectly fine first installment (Diamond/Pearl was definitely released in a rough state but I would say Sinnoh was still a well designed region) and BW2 is one of the best Pokemon games. They need more dev time. Constantly gimping these releases to meet deadlines and shareholder expectations is choking this series. How long can the brand weather this? Can they just expect kids to buy it forever?

QWILFISH
Sea-zes the Day!

Jab: Flail. Qwilfish rams the opponent with its head, then swings around to strike with its tail, and finally swings its tail from the other direction. Face jab, swish, swish.

Dash Attack: Take Down. Qwilfish, while swimming forward, lowers its face and jets toward the opponent.

Forward Tilt: Poison Sting. Qwilfish juts out its spines ahead of it, striking the foe. The tips of the spines cause more damage.

Up Tilt: Bounce. Qwilfish throws itself upward quickly using its tail as a launchpad.

Down Tilt: Astonish. Qwilfish pecks at the floor with its mouth, which can help lead into follow-ups from high hitstun.

Neutral Air: Swift. Qwilfish shoots a set of energy stars from its mouth which quickly circle its body, causing rapid damage.

Forward Air: Assurance. Qwilfish flips and slams its tail down in front of it, which can cause a meteor smash if well spaced.

Back Air: Poison Jab. Qwilfish coats itself in poison and slams its tail into the foe behind it, in a similar motion to Pac-Man's forward air.

Up Air: Gyro Ball. Qwilfish faces skyward and rapidly spins in a corkscrew fashion.

Down Air: Water Pulse. Qwilfish faces downward and launches two rings of water. Has a meteor effect if both rings hit the opponent.

Forward Smash: Liquidation. Qwilfish coats itself in a vortex of water and body slams the opponent, making it one of Qwilfish's best kill moves.

Up Smash: Pin Missile. Qwilfish gets low to the ground and then launches a barrage of spikes skyward. Essentially an upward version of Mii Gunner's forward smash.

Down Smash: Venom Drench. Qwilfish slams down, piercing the ground with its spikes. A small perimeter around Qwilfish glows with a toxic purple hue as any foe in the area of effect receives rapid poison damage.

Pummel: Tackle. Qwilfish repeatedly rams into the foe.

Forward Throw: Surf. Qwilfish forms a wave beneath it as it crashes into the opponent.

Back Throw: Waterfall. Qwilfish pins the foe with its spikes as it drags them along the ground in a torrent of water.

Up Throw: Whirlpool. Qwilfish tosses the foe upward into a rapidly spinning whirlpool.

Down Throw. Dive. Qwilfish dives into a body of water on the floor before shooting out of it into the opponent.

Neutral Special: Toxic Spikes. Qwilfish launches a set of purple, glowing spines in front of it. These stick to surfaces, be they floors, ledges, or walls. If an opponent comes into contact with a set of Toxic Spikes, they will take damage from the contact, and then begin taking rapid damage over time. Two sets of Toxic Spikes can be out at a time. Qwilfish's down smash, back air, and forward tilt will also do 1.5x the damage to an opponent in a badly poisoned state, as well as slightly extend the amount of time the opponent is in this state.

Side Special: Aqua Tail. Qwilfish leaps, lobbing itself forward in an arc while swinging its water-covered tail. At the end of the arc, it slams its tail into the opponent. Performed in a similar manner to Airborne Assault or Jolt Haymaker, and like the latter, it can be ended early, though less damage will be dealt.

Up Special: Aqua Jet. Qwilfish darts in the desired direction with a stream of water. The water doesn't do damage, but pushes foes away. This move can have its trajectory altered mid-move, but doing so increases the chance of someone punishing the recovery, as the "cone" that pushes foes away is only by Qwilfish's face. Qwilfish can airdodge after the move.

Down Special: Fell Stinger. Qwilfish launches a small spike that doesn't do much damage or knockback. However, if the foe is at rage percent, this move does a much more significant amount of knockback. If the foe is KO'd with this attack, Qwilfish gets a boost to its damage output for the rest of its stock.

Final Smash: Briny Depths. Qwilfish bites onto a nearby opponent and dives into the water, holding onto them. In a cinematic, it lets go of them as they struggle for air. Qwilfish then inhales gallons upon gallons of water before launching a massive amount of spikes with Pin Missile. The foes are then blasted back onto the stage with high knockback.
