Finished Zero's co-op Subspace Emissary series and it just reminds me of how iconic and amazing Brawl actually was. It may not be a good competitive game, but IMO it was in general a damn good game that I had tons of fun with. Only Melee comes close within the series.

Ultimate is nice, but I didn't enjoy it overall as much as Melee and Brawl. No doubt the gameplay is really refined and I can tell a lot of passion went into it, but I can't help the way I feel.
Subspace Emissary was a garbage story imo. It had it's strengths, but the story omg, it was so cliche and predictable(well, except for the final boss) it was not even funny.

If anything, this is how I would rank the games:
1)Ultimate
2)Melee
3)OG
4)Wii U(+3ds)
5)Brawl

I will admit I missed having Porky and Rayquaza as bosses (probably because of nostalgia but also because, at least in Porky's case, Mother getting more love is always nice given how niche it is). Maybe that could be somewhat mitigated by Porky being playable, but I do have my doubts.

I liked world of light alot, but to me subspace is way better. I miss all the cutscenes and how the characters interacted.

Somewhat agree, but I feel that the cutscenes barely added anything to the mode. Sure it's fun to see Yoshi and Link fight together, but that's literally all you get, cutscene-wise.

On the other hand, WOL did focus way too much on gameplay it felt like Smash Tour but slightly better, so idk.

It really is an awkward situation.
"yo so what are we gonna do about that thing mysterio di-"

"mysteri-WHO???????"

"ok but the vulture, he's"

"the WHATture????"

i mean i guess they could bring back donald glover and make him the prowler since he preexists in the Spider-Man films but isn't connected with anything caused by MCU characters

Maybe that could be somewhat mitigated by Porky being playable, but I do have my doubts.
my spirit theory still stands

I find it kinda funny how Mario Kart tour has taken off in my school all of the sudden. People are playing it everywhere, dammit!

If only Disney weren't so greedy sometimes, they might have been able to work something out with Sony and not have the MCU be in this predicament.
You just reminded me that some apparently accurate source said that Disney was planning on outright buying Spidey. Wonder how that ends up panning out.

If world of light had more cutscenes like the opening one, where the characters had actual dialog, that would have been perfect.

Definitely agree with that. WOL as a whole felt a bit rushed, with way too little interaction with characters. Give me some dialogue between bosses at least.
Hell, WOL doesn't even explain the events that lead up to the opening cutscene, and where the hell Galeem even came from. Hell, even Dharkon has pretty much no explanation for why he even exists, and seems to be shoe-horned in because "muh final boss"

god please, i'd kill for so many cutscenes with the style and quality of these reveal trailers

they're so well done but also probably stupid expensive

Waking up and still sleepy, so business as usual with me. Still feeling crappy though...

I see Engame (and movies in general) were getting brought up. Well, truth to be told, I watch like 1-2 movies a year. I haven't even seen a single Marvel movie past the first Avangers movie.

Part of me is kind of hoping we could still get a bonus WoL map based off of the DLC characters with added bosses. Would be a perfect place to re-implement them. I know we aren’t getting new modes but... idk. Spirit battles are super easy to make. The basic architecture for the Rayquaza and Porky fights are already built, and it’s not that much extra work to draw a new map.

Still probably not gonna happen.

I miss the platforming levels.

Ranking Smash games? Ok let's do it.

Original- Small cast and not many stages. Competitive... not that bad since most of the cast is decent to great. Yeah, Pikachu and Kirby are overpowered butt-munches, but Falcon, Yoshi, Fox, Puff, and Mario all have solid tools that can be used in many situations as well. Ness can be counterpicked in some situations as well. Good for its time, but due to the limits in the game it's a forgotten game.

Melee- This is where Smash really left its mark. More than double the cast (albeit with many clones/echo fighters) and PLENTY more stages. More game modes and smoother gameplay made the game stunning, and it's amazing how the competitive scene is still alive today. The dedication to this game is great, and it's revolutionary even if the character balance hasn't aged well. With cast and competitive play, here are your viable picks: :foxmelee::jigglypuffmelee::marthmelee::falcomelee::sheikmelee::peachmelee: and sometimes :pikachumelee::falconmelee::yoshimelee::icsmelee:. Everyone else ranges from average to awful, and even then :foxmelee: and :jigglypuffmelee: seem to be ruling the meta right now even above the other viable characters. It can be a ton of fun to watch the intricate combos and plays, but the balance ain't good.

Brawl- Best single player mode line up by far. Subspace is a lot of fun, even with the basic, straightfoward story. You can do co-op as well which makes it a ton of fun. Break the targets, while not as fun as in Melee with each character not getting a unique stage LIKE in Melee, it's still pretty dope. Fun if you just wanna derp around and have a good time with items. Competitively though? Dumpster fire. If you don't pick :metaknight: or even :popo:, things are gonna be an uphill battle in most competitive environments. If those two characters were banned from the start, I think competitive play would've been healthier in hindsight. No matter what though, I have a lot of nostalgia with this game. It's very fun when playing with friends.

Smash 4- This game is a tale of two eras: pre-DLC and post-DLC. Pre-DLC, character balancing was introduced and the game was pretty well-balanced after the Shiek and Diddy nerfs. However, after :4bayonetta: and :4cloud2: began ruling the meta, competitive play tanked concerning balance and enjoyment. I still say that the main game mode is smoother than in Brawl, being slightly faster (and still being better balanced, which is good) but single player is forgettable in hind sight. Smash Run was ok, but story mode in Brawl had me captured far more. And Smash Tour I dislike. Never enjoyed that mode. All in all... expands upon Brawl and definitely improved some things, but has aged poorly.

Ultimate- Best competitive balance ever so far. :ultpeach: and :ultjoker: may be the top meta picks right now, but neither are overpowered. You still have PLENTY of viable options that can reasonably win majors, such as :ultfox:, :ultpalutena:, :ultpikachu:, :ultzss:, :ultsnake:, :ultpokemontrainer:, :ultwario:, and :ultinkling:, :ultmario:, :ultlucina:, :ultrob:, :ultroy:, :ultshulk:, and :ultwolf: aren't bad choices for competitive play, either. The low tier as of late is notably small, meaning that you have more freedom with your choices. Lopsided matchups are at an all time low, which is great. Competitive play gets an A for me so far. For single player? I do enjoy World of Light. Map is confusing sometimes which gets annoying, but I like the spirit gimmick. Classic is alright for me too, even though WoL outshines it. Subspace is special and Brawl's single player is legendary imo, but Ultimate's single player is a step up from Smash 4, especially with bringing the one and only Home Run contest back.

With all that being said, here's my official Smash game ranking as of now:
1. Ultimate
2. Brawl
3. Melee
4. Smash 4
5. Original

If we include Project M, it goes in-between Ultimate and Brawl.

I haven’t played Melee and i’ve only ever played one match of 64. So of the games i’ve played.... yeah. I agree with this order.

Does anyone have a link to that "smiley" leak? I don't want to watch Blocked Content.
Little late but I decided to (sigh) go to the video and take a screen cap. It’s blurry but I’ll write out what I can read.

36F8B6B9-1563-43CB-9D06-96DE4B0A9EA4.png

Basically
- FP5 is Waluigi (doubt.png)
- Pass 2 revealed at Game Awards
- characters are, in order: a Square Enix character (either Geno, 2B, Sora, Chrono, Mallow or someone else), Arle Nadja, Doom Slayer, Steve and Crash
- possibly pass 3 and 4, but currently no plans for pass 5
- bonus character that if you own every DLC you’ll get that character for free. Person heard it was Frisk. This is probably the biggest BS part of the leak IMO
- more Mii costumes including Hollow Knight, Hat Kid and (LUL) Fortnite Jonesy

... yeah all I can say to this is “thank u, next”

undermining the possibility of any fortnite content compared to other things is underestimating just how powerful epic games has become within the past few years alone

Eh. I guess to me I just tend to look past the fighting part of the game because I can have fun with any fighting game just because the genre itself is fun to watch and participate in. Multiplayer is fun by virtue of being multiplayer tbh and the game was still a blast when everyone wanted Meta Knight and then collectively got mad at each other. Looking past the fighting part, Brawl has the Coin Launcher, Masterpieces, the Gallery for trophies and all, the first Stage Builder, awesome music, a whole ton of great additions to the cast, a pretty lengthy story mode that was essentially an expanded Adventure Mode fron Melee but with a narrative to keep your attention with cutscenes that are practically unbeatable (Ultimate showed some promise but ultimately aside from the first intro cutscene with actual dialogue being a huge tease, we got relatively little), the other modes like Break the Targets, Home Run Contest, All-Star Smash, Boss Rush, Event Matches, etc. It also still had Trophies and it introduced the Final Smashes to the series. Also, in terms of sound design and voice acting? Superb. Melee also had great sound design, music, and Fox's memorable voice delivery.

Admittedly, Board the Platforms, character-specfic Break the Targets, and Race to the Finish weren't there and Sitckers are a poor man's spirits (although it's still annoying to get all the Spirits), but that was really it.

Ultimate lacks a lot of quality of life things I loved like trophies and the plethora of other fun modes, but overall it's still really good. The care that was put into the DLC for this game and the content in general is just insane and a huge accomplishment and the story was still enjoyable along with it having a good bit of extra content on the side.

But in terms of my enjoyment of the games, it still would rank below Melee and Brawl, even if it's probably objectively got more going for it than those two.

As much as I love the Subspace Emissary cutscenes, I felt the platformer levels were lackluster, especially due to the fact that the majority of them weren't based on the game areas. Combined with a majority of the enemies being original rather than enemies from different games.......yeah.

Smash Run really fixed the issue with the enemies, as I really loved fighting enemies from the different series. Sure, the majority of them were from Super Mario and Kid Icarus(due to easy porting), but it still felt cool fighting the different list of enemies. The area was still mostly original, but the platforming design with the area was nice.

With World of Light, I like the idea of the majority of the levels being "bosses", but I think it could've been better had it had more of a Cuphead approach with majority being "bosses" and a few being platforming levels.

I still hope that Smash Run does come back as a mode one day, cause I really replayed that alot and I'd love to see what they'd update about it.
