Ranking Smash games? Ok let's do it.
Original- Small cast and not many stages. Competitive... not that bad since most of the cast is decent to great. Yeah, Pikachu and Kirby are overpowered butt-munches, but Falcon, Yoshi, Fox, Puff, and Mario all have solid tools that can be used in many situations as well. Ness can be counterpicked in some situations as well. Good for its time, but due to the limits in the game it's a forgotten game.
Melee- This is where Smash really left its mark. More than double the cast (albeit with many clones/echo fighters) and PLENTY more stages. More game modes and smoother gameplay made the game stunning, and it's amazing how the competitive scene is still alive today. The dedication to this game is great, and it's revolutionary even if the character balance hasn't aged well. With cast and competitive play, here are your viable picks:
and sometimes
. Everyone else ranges from average to awful, and even then
and
seem to be ruling the meta right now even above the other viable characters. It can be a ton of fun to watch the intricate combos and plays, but the balance ain't good.
Brawl- Best single player mode line up by far. Subspace is a lot of fun, even with the basic, straightfoward story. You can do co-op as well which makes it a ton of fun. Break the targets, while not as fun as in Melee with each character not getting a unique stage LIKE in Melee, it's still pretty dope. Fun if you just wanna derp around and have a good time with items. Competitively though? Dumpster fire. If you don't pick
or even
, things are gonna be an uphill battle in most competitive environments. If those two characters were banned from the start, I think competitive play would've been healthier in hindsight. No matter what though, I have a lot of nostalgia with this game. It's very fun when playing with friends.
Smash 4- This game is a tale of two eras: pre-DLC and post-DLC. Pre-DLC, character balancing was introduced and the game was pretty well-balanced after the Shiek and Diddy nerfs. However, after
and
began ruling the meta, competitive play tanked concerning balance and enjoyment. I still say that the main game mode is smoother than in Brawl, being slightly faster (and still being better balanced, which is good) but single player is forgettable in hind sight. Smash Run was ok, but story mode in Brawl had me captured far more. And Smash Tour I dislike. Never enjoyed that mode. All in all... expands upon Brawl and definitely improved some things, but has aged poorly.
Ultimate- Best competitive balance ever so far.
and
may be the top meta picks right now, but neither are overpowered. You still have PLENTY of viable options that can reasonably win majors, such as
,
,

,
,
,
,
,
, and
aren't bad choices for competitive play, either. The low tier as of late is notably small, meaning that you have more freedom with your choices. Lopsided matchups are at an all time low, which is great. Competitive play gets an A for me so far. For single player? I do enjoy World of Light. Map is confusing sometimes which gets annoying, but I like the spirit gimmick. Classic is alright for me too, even though WoL outshines it. Subspace is special and Brawl's single player is legendary imo, but Ultimate's single player is a step up from Smash 4, especially with bringing the one and only Home Run contest back.
With all that being said, here's my official Smash game ranking as of now:
1. Ultimate
2. Brawl
3. Melee
4. Smash 4
5. Original
If we include Project M, it goes in-between Ultimate and Brawl.
