Snake isn't wrong though. 2D Mario has played it incredibly safe, like, the last time they took a risk was in 2006 with NSMB, where they focused on expanding Mario's movepool to include a bunch of maneuvers he could do in the 3D games as well as expanding the level design to accomidate for a larger game.

3D Mario is a different story, with the exception of like Galaxy 2 and maybe 3D World (ironically, 3D Land felt more unoriginal despite being a prequel), all of them took creative liberties with design and core mechanics.

We definitely need a remastered version of Donkey Kong 64.
Yeah. It definitely needs a lot of quality of life tweaks like the Banjo remasters on 360 at the very least (which is what I hope they will do on a hypothetical Rare Replay on the Switch) but I would love them to go full Crash/Spyro with it.

Should I buy the virtual console release on Wii U?

Is it just me, or are you ignoring all of the people who say things even remotely against your opinion?

TBH it's probably just me(and if it's the case, I apologize)

I get a lot of guff for saying this. And I will admit I haven’t played most of Mario’s games (though I have watched many a review and lets play so I feel like I at least have an idea), but Mario has always felt more... safe? Like, it’s to abstract and weird to feel like it’s a consistent world you’re exploring. Whereas DK has always felt more natural. It has more charm than Mario.

Heck. If it makes you feel better, i’ll get the free year of NSO and try out the available Mario games.

.....

Well maybe they should have given Mickey a Disney Afternoon show.
I feel like Mario's charm is being abstract and weird, but they actually are very consistent at the same time. Look at pretty much any Mario game, you'll always see grasslands, deserts, jungles, sky worlds, etc.

I will agree that the games can play it safe a little too often, but at it's best it's a wacky and fun world that isn't too wacky, and still feels cohesive. Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and Galaxy 1 and 2 are great examples of the world of Mario at it's best imo.

And as a final note, you should definitely play Mario for yourself to understand it's appeal. Playthroughs and reviews don't do it justice, it's just something you gotta experience yourself.

"Creative"?

Mario has has some creative power-ups and innovative mechanics in his 3D games.

Hell, even the 2D Mario's gave you the ability to hold items, fly, find secrets, had different movements options like the spin jump, and a momentum-based system that effected the height of your jumps or your flight.

Yoshi is part of the Mario world thou. To say it isn't is delusional imo. Especially considering this exists:
View attachment 239193
I'm not saying the Yoshi games aren't "part of the Mario world." I'm saying it is its own franchise with its own focus and mechanics. Of course, Wario's series started off similarly (Wario Land wasn't even a prequel that took place decades before, it was a direct sequel to Super Mario Land 2), yet everyone conveniently forgets that :yoshi:

Honestly, out of all the Mario subseries, being DK, Yoshi, and Wario Land... I would say Yoshi's is the least memorable. Like, the 1st game was legit very good, the rest, bad to just good, but nothing truly magical like Wario Land or Donkey Kong Country.

In fact, it probably had the most stinkers of the 2D Mario games, expanded universe included.

I would say Oswald the Lucky Rabbit but that’s probably not true anymore thanks to Epic Mickey.

Maybe Making Fiends since it only had 6-7 episodes before it went off air.

Can’t really think of anything else.

-calling Mario safe

When paper Mario exists and is literally about the most random and crazy stories they can tell in this universe.

-one of the most acclaimed titles is TYOD for honestly not following the Mario forumula as typical as other games.

The most stinkers? So..... one?

It isn't even "bad" from an overall standpoint, just mediocre in regards to Yoshi's Island.

New Island was bad in the fact that it just didn't have an identity, it just took everything from the first one and made it... worse. That's all it was, the first game, but worse. And I can't really defend a game that's just makes me wish I was playing the prequel.

Also, how's about that Donkey Konga or Jungle Beat or DK: King of Swing?

Interesting how none of those games get brought up... :yoshi:

No, I'm not bashing DK games. But it's fair game if you want to bring up "quality"

Wasn't Super Mario Odyssey praised for refining what made 3d Mario good while adding fresh takes for the whole series? It's why New Donk City is one of the highlights for some people.

My dad played the Wii version of jungle beat when I was small. It looked fine.

But when most people talk about the DK games, they’re talking about the ones made by Rare and Retro.

Yoshi does legit deserve better. He's been pawned off to so many companies and all of his games have been hit or miss.

Maybe it's about time we get an inhouse Yoshi's Island game again.

Sam and Max for sure.

It's humor is not like anything I've seen before. It's fast-paced and chaotic, but also surprisingly intelligent. I'd recommend it if you're interested in something different.
Imo I only knew this thing even existed via Poker Night at the Inventory(both of them)

Not my kinda show, but it looks cool.

The most obscure cartoon I’ve watched is so obscure I can’t even find it.

It was about a Cheetah, a Parrot, and a Gorilla in a hat going on an adventure.

It’s been a decade and it’s just lost to time.

Oh wait, no. I guess it's fine to bring up the Artoon Yoshi games to drag it through the mud but not the Paon titles for DK? :yoshi:

Idk. From what i’ve Seen it still looks pretty safe.

Like, I feel like if you stripped Odyssey if it’s Mario banding, it wouldn’t get as much praise. Maybe i’ll Sing a different tune if I ever actually play it. But that’s the impression i’ve Got from what i’ve Seen.

I used that on Nicktoons, surprised someone else remembers it.
I wish it was on the channels we had more often. Problem is a lot of old shows were on "premium channels" that weren't in Manitowoc. I missed all of Dragon Ball due to this. -_- I was able to see classic DBZ, classic DBZ uncut, DBZ Kai, DBZ Kai uncut, DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters, DBGT, and as of now, Super, so it's not all bad. Cartoon Network came at a good time. Funny how a lot of its anime moved to other channels unless it was more adult. Pokemon not being on there is weiiiird.

They should really delve into the Star Children stuff some more.

Maybe a Yoshi game where the babies are all pre-teens or teenagers and their mood swings activate some of that "unlimited power" they hold to power the mechs Kamek puts them into or something sort of like Eggman with the woodland critters and Yoshi has to neutralize them?

I would never do that. Honestly, I feel like, when judging the quality of a series, you need to drop the 2-3 worst games in the series from your perception. Like how a college professor will drop your lowest test score.

But would it have the same impact to someone who’s not a huge Mario fan?

I actually remember really enjoying that show. Me as a kid never would have guessed it would become so obscure.
Considering everyone here is bringing it up, I don’t think it’s actually that obscure.

Yoshi games are fun, but I think a lot of people get this "rinse and repeat" feeling from them.

I've played every game in the series, and it didn't recapture my attention until Woolly World (and even then, the art style and music is what drew me to it, not the gameplay.) I just don't think it's a series that can pull off repetitiveness like 2D Mario games can, or at least not as well. Each game needs something really innovative in order to convince people to buy it, whereas new power-ups are usually enough for 2D Mario games. There doesn't need to be any drastic changes in gameplay for the latter.
