Fwiw, I know this was several pages ago, but it's nonsense.

The "Big Four" is just another version of some grouping of whoever is most demanded around a certain time. Sometimes it's "Big Four", sometimes it's "Elite Four + Champion" sometimes it's "Holy Trinity"; the naming and membership of this club are highly fluid.

For example, Geno and Banjo wouldn't have been included in Smash 4's version of this. I remember, it was Ridley, K. Rool, Mega Man, Palutena, and Mewtwo. Those were the E4, Mewtwo was the Champion. Even after Mega Man was confirmed, I recall him being swapped out for Little Mac. After 4 released, it was switched to Ridley, K. Rool, Isaac and Snake.

And at different times during the Brawl cycle you probably would've seen Wario, Sonic, Diddy, Dedede, Mega Man, Geno, Ridley, maybe Krystal, etc. all rotate through.

Ridley and K. Rool probably have been staples the longest, but there's no consistency or consensus with this grouping. Even now the new trinity is apparently Geno, Isaac, and Waluigi. It's all made in the moment, and really only reflects characters that at one point, had a high level of Smash popularity.
Dude. You’re just wrong about this. K. Rool, Ridley, Geno, and Banjo have all been the huge requests since the original game. But beyond their popularity within the community, they were all united because their inclusion was thought to be impossible for one reason or another. It shouldn’t really be “the big four”. It should be “the impossible four”.

I really doubt that K.Rool and Geno were particularly popular before Diddy and Bowser were in.

The original game?
Freaking Bowser and Ganondorf weren't in Smash by that point. I love Ridley but I refuse to believe anyone thought those four you mentioned were as important as the Koopa king himself.

You are absolutely right about Bowser, as he was the most requested character for Melee.

I may be a huge Metroid fan, but even I believe that Ridley isn’t near to being as popular or huge as Bowser or Eggman in the videogame industry.

Bowser is just THE videogame villain.

Nobody talked seriously about Banjo after the buyout. It wasn’t until the Phil Spencer tweet that the demand built up. And after Brawl Geno support died down until the costume and Sakurai’s statement.

K. Rool and Ridley are the only ones with consistent. persistent requests, and even K. Rool didn’t truly blow up until Diddy got in.

Ok, so Taiga gets a lot nicer (still with her faults), but is much less verbally aggressive to Ryuji from ep 15 and on.

I like. This show has been very enjoyable. Will probably be finished with it tomorrow.

It is still true that before Melee Bowser was way more demanded than any other character doh.

I think that if it wasn’t for Samus Returns and Prime 4, Metroid would not have gotten this much content in Ultimate.

And I say this as a Metroid fan, as much of a downer as saying this may be.

That is questionable all around, I agree they are huge characters and are colloquially known as the biggest requests in the community, but to say that all four have been that way since the original game, nevertheless melee, is just flat out wrong

Now, I heard that there were in fact rumours about Ridley being playable in Melee due to the game’s reveal being done through its intro.

But that was about it back then.

even if there was a big four, I don't really feel like Geno would be in it. Characters like Geno and Isaac just aren't really popular with the newer smash fans

I kind of get peeved a little when someone tries to force some holy trinity with Ridley. There has never been, and never will be, a character that is as divisive, as big, and as consistent as Ridley when it comes to Smash speculation.

Ridley support always struck me as a slow burn, it didn't really start until Melee and only reached fever pitch leading up to Smash 4. People pretty much wrote Banjo off as impossible up until the ballot, and I barely saw any K. Rool talk at all until Brawl.

I posted on DKVine during Brawl speculation. It wasn’t until Dedede getting in, showing that Kirby could get two newcomers, that K. Rool talk really got going. He was talked about before but the focus was always Diddy.

Even then Bowser was actually planned to be in the original N64 game alongside King Dedede (Also planned for Melee), Marth and Mewtwo. I recall there were also considerations for Pit but he was scrapped due to animation issues with the wings (He was also probably planned again for Melee but was scrapped again for the same reason).

I hope FE over takes Pokemon as Nintendo's main focus.
Nah. FE is good, but it's hard to get into it if you aren't really crazy about JRPGs.

Pokemon is a fun light-hearted franchise that people of all ages can play. Doesn't matter if you're new to video games or that forty year-old dude who's been playing them non-stop for the past thirty years.

I think there was some speculation about Meowth being considered for 64 too, or at least false rumours about that.

During Sm4sh speculation, I considered K. Rool, Isaac, and Dee the trinity of Smash requests. It was kinda weird to do that, looking back; they all had large fanbases, but they got popular around different times.

I was a Ridley believer for years, and was extatic when he finally made, but I seriosuly doubt that he, along with K.Rool, Banjo, and Geno were as highly requested as they were in the days of the orignal Smash and Melee. They didn't gain steam until years later.

I do hope Nintendo shifts their attention away from Pokemon and focus more on their other franchises. Maybe its better to give Pokemon the zelda treatment release a big game every once in awhile Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild had a large gap between releases.

I just wanted any Metroid rep who wasn’t Samus for years.

Not just Ridley since I honestly had my doubts back then, but also other picks I found cool such as Dark Samus, Rundas or any of the Prime Hunters rivals.
