Job 1
Submit an Indie Character
We of course need a roster, so I will ask to submit an indie character of your choice to enter into this game. It can be from any game, though games with mature themes like The Binding of Isaac and Five Nights at Freddy's need to be censored in some way. That does not mean those games are banned; they just need to be toned down for a general audience. Anyway, have fun in this job, and the number of participants will determine how I'll do the voting.

Job 2
Submit a track
Submit a track based off an Indie game, now this track doesn't have to be themed around your submitted character, but it's encouraged. Try and be specific with this submission in terms of layout for when we do a map-making job. Also, while you can include sections that only planes and hovercrafts can use, it HAS to accommodate karts, so make sure you include that. Also, the track has to be a standard three laps. Otherwise, this job is very fluid, detail the title of the track, where it comes from, the concept of the track, and if it accommodates land, sea, or air racing. Unlike the first tracks of Mario Kart, you can be more crazy, just not too crazy, if you catch my drift.

Peppino
I think it's safe to say that Peppino will be an idie mascot alongside the likes of Shovel Knight, Freddy, and other icons, so he should be one of the first characters introduced. Peppino has it all: creative items, cool victory poses, and the personality to match.

Gnome Forest
Pizza Tower (2023)
Land/Air

It is my personal observation that Gnome Forest is one of the more iconic levels in the game, so I am deciding to adapt it into our first track. A clearing in a great pine forest, this stage rewards technical movement despite being the first track. I picture the stage starting with a gentle curve over a grassy clearing, with the grass slowing you down, there are logs you can dive through for some shortcuts, including a big one that requires an item to break open to pass. The next section takes place inside a giant tree, where the infamous Pickles will walk around, creating an electric field that you have to drive around. The third a final part takes place in a mushroom garden, where you can switch between the grass below and the tree branches above before entering the goal to start the next lap. You also have the choice of flying in a place, going through loops made from flowers and driving around the large tree section rather than through it, however you also have a horde of Noise Goblins shooting arrows at you, and they can be pretty tricky to dodge, so you have a choice to make.

Character: Isaac
Game: Binding of Isaac (2011)

Job 2: Track Submit

pridemoor.png

Track Name: Pridemoor Keep
Series: Shovel Knight (2014)
(Land)

Taking place at Pridemoor Keep, a large, golden, lavish, and fortified castle once overtaken by King Knight. The racers find themselves going through the castle with lots of tight turns and many rooms while avoiding enemies like Propeller Rats, Beetos, Griffoths, and Goldarmors.

You'll start at the entrance and race on the courtyard going inside the castle taking many different paths nilly willy such as dodging falling chandeliers.

Next, racing on the battlements and up a spiral staircase into the main throne room with King Knight himself sitting on the throne watching the race.

You go out of the castle racing back on the battlements dodging enemies and return to the entrance.

(I imagine the track layout being kind of like Bowser's Castle in Mario Kart)

Job 1: Annalynn

LOL. LMAO, even.

Job 2: Mount Celeste (Celeste) (Land/Air)

This is a three-part course as opposed to a three-lap one, kinda like Mount Wario from Mario Kart. Each part focuses on different aesthetics; The first part is dark and snowy, while the next two portions take place in more vibrant and mystical areas. The race ends on the peak of Mount Celeste, with the finish line facing a cliffside displaying a beautiful sunset.

Okay, so here's the thing. I could go in one of three directions here - obvious picks, obscure picks, or funny picks that people will hate. I've decided my modus operandi for this job is going to be the latter, because honestly, a kart racer has a lot more space for "what the **** is this" than a more traditional celebration of indie games (like All-Star Strife.) With that in mind:

Job #01:
Character Name: Ayani Aishi
Character Origin: Yandere Simulator (when? who knows...)

The funny thing about Yandere Simulator is that it's uniquely a game that a lot of people know about, not because of it's quality, but because of its infamous development cycle. Even so, it's unique to consider here when we bear in mind how well-known it undeniably is. With that in mind, Ayani would be a pretty funny pick to see here - but actually wouldn't be too bad either. I can imagine a lot of her animations including things like knife tosses and various items from Yandere Simulator, and it would admittedly be pretty funny if one of her victory poses were something like her tossing forward a mannequin of Osana and then triumphantly standing atop it. She's hardly the indie icon that characters like Cuphead, Isaac or Peppino are, but she's still got some star power.

Job #02:
Track Name: Unity City
Track Origin: Presumably some free asset store somewhere (early 2010s?)
Track Type: Land

Remember being young? Remember having unfettered access to the Google Play Store which was filled with carbon copy driving simulators, all of which used identical maps, all of which were this one specifically? We're bringing it back - because nothing screams "indie" more than terrible Google Play experiences. For the most part, the track follows the road on the outside of the city, before coming back in and passing through the high street. There's also the occasional shortcut here and there, such as being able to pass through the courtyard between the buildings, but overall Unity City is a fairly simple inclusion, intended to get people used to the controls and the overall "vibe".

The track idea is funny, but I want to focus on a specific franchise for this first job, so I don't think this will work as a submition for this job, I suggest changing it.

I'm deciding to remove the 3 laps restriction, since this is an Indie themed kart racer we can afford to be more unique, just base it on an existing franchise.

Entires will end in a few hours

An indie kart racer is inevitable for sure.

Shovel Knight

Need I say more, he's too iconic of an indie character. He's no stranger to crossovers and I feel he should be in a racing game.

Megalovania (Undertale)

maxresdefault.jpg

A track themed after the iconic boss fight in Undertale! You simply drive past Sans's attacks. It's about a 5 lap course as each section consists of a few bone attacks and the liking.

I think I want to show off my idea for the game's structure, it's sorta Mario 64 like in that you have a large hub map to explore and you can enter tracks to do individual tracks in any order you want, beating those tracks unlocks a door to a boss race in a unqiue track, then you can play all the tracks in a single section for one cup.

Each section will have 4 normal tracks and 1 boss track, so each cup has 5 tracks. This freedom in choice means there isn't one basic circuit track, rather the first cup focuses on introducing land, sea, and air based tracks, with the 4th track being a more gimmicky track, followed by the track used for the boss race. After completing that cup you unlock a mission mode for each track, including a harder rematch with the boss.

There isnt a theme to this first section of the map, though I am planning future sections to be themed around different concepts like a safari world, a horror world, and a technology world.

Does that sound like a fun proposition, it also allows us to make a full on story mode and have some garanteed villain characters.

Job 3
Adventure Mode Plot and Antagonists
I think I want to show off my idea for the game's structure, it's sorta Mario 64 like in that you have a large hub map to explore and you can enter tracks to do individual tracks in any order you want, beating those tracks unlocks a door to a boss race in a unqiue track, then you can play all the tracks in a single section for one cup.

Does that sound like a fun proposition, it also allows us to make a full on story mode and have some guaranteed villain characters.
There will be an adventure mode in this game, and we need a basic plot for this mode. Build a plot around the mode structure shown above, and we also need a good antagonist, this antagonist will both be a boss racer and a playable character and will have the final main track themed around them. Now to offer more possibilities you can have the option of including 2 antagonists, meaning a maximum of 2 new playable characters. Some things to note is:
  • The antagonists can be either from the same franchise or separate franchises
  • The plot of the adventure mode has to accommodate for the fact that anyone can be playable
  • The winner will determine how I will set up future track jobs, so keep that in mind
Anyway just make a good basic plot for an adventure mode with some antagonists, have fun.

Job 4
Submit an sea-based course

Submit a course with a large focus on sea-based driving, this means you must include the hovercraft in the track though you can also include either the plane or kart. 3 laps only, has to be based off a specific franchise, and you need to detail the basic concept for the layout, obstacles, among other details, it's encouraged that you don't pick a stage based off a franchise that we will be voting on for the first track, though that doesn't mean their banned.

1. Sans. I feel conflicted about his inclusion in some way. On the one hand, he seems like he'd be way too lazy to really care about a racing tournament. On the other hand, his tricycle would be comically overpowered and the idea of Sans on a tricycle being a super-heavyweight who has the highest top speed in the game as well as the ability to send you flying with a single nudge is utterly hilarious. An UNDERTALE rep is pretty much inevitable, but I don't mind.
2. Peppino. Hey, even if Pizza Tower is shockingly popular, I think the opportunity to represent newer games overall here is one that we can't miss out on.
3. Annalynn. funneh
4. Shovel Knight. it's ****ing shovel knight what do you expect

1. Mt. Celeste. There's a lot of potential for this to be a beautiful track, and adding the idea of it being a combination air-land track overall, it feels like it'd be a frantic but fun inclusion to the roster of racetracks we have to deal with here.
2. Pridemore Keep. Honestly, the idea of seeing this in 3D is enough to sell me on this one, but I think it'd be a lot of fun as a Bowser's Castle standin whilst still having plenty of unique vibes to make it feel fresh and fun.
3. Snowdin. Hey, this one would be awesome too! Snowdin is a hella iconic location from UNDERTALE, and it honestly feels pretty fitting to include here in some way or another. Just imagining all of the cameos seems so fun already!
4. Gnome Forest. heh. lario

Job #03:
Given the tendency of a lot of indie games to famously have self-referential plots and a consistent handshake and slap to the face of the fourth wall, I think it'd be funny if the plotline is centred less around a Subspace-like "oh **** everyone's fighting" plot, and more around a plot that is consciously aware of three things: first, that it's an indie game, second, that it's a kart racer, and third, that it's a crossover. With this in mind, my suggestion for the first main villain is:

Character Name: The Player
Character Origin: Actually quite a lot of places, but we could include Undertale, Deltarune, OneShot, YIIK, technically Minecraft, Doki Doki Literature Club, OFF, LISA: The Painful, a lot of RPGMaker games, and a number of others besides.

It's a create-a-character! Wait, what?

Casting the player's own character as the villain would be a lot of fun for a story like this, especially if we take it that The Player is actually only a simulation of what the game thinks you are. When you start up the game, it starts with a pretty typical "insert the hero's name" prompt, and appears more akin to a 16-bit RPG. Then, once you're done, The Player decides "no, screw this, I want to race in karts" and creates the Indie 500 as a result. The Player themselves apparently has the ability to manipulate the game in any way they see fit, allowing them to "manifest" various different things into the game, and after taking a look around the Internet, they've decided to pull a wide variety of locations and characters from "some games not made by BigCorp or something". Indie games!

As for the character's appearance, I'd say we should lean fully into the RPG-inspired aesthetic by having their character model literally be a 16-bit sprite, not dissimilar to how Donkey Kong Jr. was added into Mario Kart Tour, with a similar appearance to sprites in EarthBound. Their animations would differ slightly depending on which "class" you set them as - either a Hero, a Warrior, a Mage, a Psychic, or a Literal Child - but their stats remain the same regardless.

However, The Player has decided that they require an OMINOUS SIDEKICK. And who might that be?

Character Name: 2048
Character Origin: 2048

Inspired by the legends of "Marty the Stone" on a castle-themed race course in some old game they played when they were younger, The Player decided they'd need an assistant - and thus decided to download one from the Play Store in the form of 2048. An ominous block with the apparent ability to move around and increase or decrease its value by either doubling or halving itself into blocks, 2048 is unique in that they're a puzzle rep - not often seen in indie crossovers, given the natural focus on platformers and RPGs. Nonetheless, 2048 seems like they'd be an out of the box inclusion who, despite their ominous nature, honestly isn't so evil - they just think The Player is pretty neat. Also, the idea of having a literal cube be playable is pretty funny.

Job #04:
Stage Name: The Aquarium
Stage Origin: Octodad: Dadliest Catch (2014)

There's a ton of ways we could take this, but I can't help but imagine this would be a chaotic experience overall. The artstyle and general feel should be the same - however, the infamous chaos of Octodad makes sense to bring in here. You'd drive around the aquarium and see a lot of unique setpieces - but after the first lap, one of the tanks shatters and floods the entire place, turning it into a primarily hovercraft-focused track. Hey, you could even include some other indie cameos here - Treasure Knight searching for some gold, or Orcane having a swim, feels like it'd be fresh.

I really like the ideas KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 posed for the antagonists.

Now, onto the track:

Planet 4546B (Subnautica)

SBZ-5.jpg

What better way to do a track themed around the sea by doing one from a game that involves underwater exploration? In this track, there are three laps where you drive under the sea in a kart. You'll see the tons of bodiversity but various predators may come and attack you while racing! Be careful as there are lots of tight twists and turns on this track.

KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 's idea is too perfect and I can't think of an idea better than her.

I at least have this
1680664178754.png

Pirate's Cove
Franchise: Five Nights at Freddy's
Sea/Air

Five Nights at Freddy's was one of the early indie hits, helping popularize the industry, so some representation is a given. I think it would be cool and fitting for this track to take place in an actual animatronic boat attraction, being a parody of Disney Land's Pirates of the Caribbean. This stage takes place in the titular Pirate's Cove, but instead of the dingy play area it's now a full on high seas adventure. The stage starts out with a s-shaped bend around some pirate ships, hovercrafts need to ride around the ships and avoid explosive barrels and kelp-covered phantom animatronics that try to grapple you, in the air however the planes need to avoid cannonballs filled with Minirinas that obscure your vision and try to weigh you down. The next section is a big jump towards Foxy's recently wrecked pirate ship, the hovercrafts now need to drive up the ship's hull while cannonballs rain down upon you (think of that big slope from Rock Rock Mountain, it's basically that) while the planes have a technical section around the ship's wreckage. Finally, you are taken to a river leading to buried treasure, but ghost pirates are abound, or in this case, Puppets, who try to grip and possess your vehicle by reversing their controls. Hovercrafts have a faster but more chaotic track rushing down the rapids, avoiding rocks and exploding barrels, while the planes can fly over and dodge ghosts. I think this course idea is pretty cool and I hope others will agree on me on that.

By the way, we shouldn't do villains for story mode until we have our first few racers.
I get that, my logic was if each character didnt have there own personal adventure mode it shouldnt matter, however if everyone wants adventure mode revived later down the road I can surely do that

Anyway entires will end in a few hours

Voting is over, with so many entries I decided to include the top 4 characters:

Peppino
Sans
Shovel Knight
Cuphead

These characters will be the first choices in our roster, however, we can only 1 winning racetrack, and Mt. Celeste is that racetrack.

However there is also a new announcement, I decided to cancel the adventure mode job for now, I feel like we are too soon in the thread for developing one, I think once we reach our first boss race we will be ready for that kind of job.

That doesn't mean we can't still vote on our next track though:

1. Sans
2. Peppino
3. Shovel Knight
4. Cuphead

1. Pridemoor Keep
2. Mt. Celeste
3. Megalovania
4. Devil's Casino

I really like the ideas KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 posed for the antagonists.

Now, onto the track:

Planet 4546B (Subnautica)

View attachment 370349

What better way to do a track themed around the sea by doing one from a game that involves underwater exploration? In this track, there are three laps where you drive under the sea in a kart. You'll see the tons of bodiversity but various predators may come and attack you while racing! Be careful as there are lots of tight twists and turns on this track.
1. Peppino
2. Shovel Knight
3. Cuphead
4. Analynn

1. Keep
2. Snowdin
3. Mount
4. Unity

Waterway (Cave Story) (Sea)

Starts at the cabin and ends at the main artery. On the way, currents will push racers and spikes will damage them.
KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 's idea is too perfect and I can't think of an idea better than her.

I at least have this

Vote for your top 3, you may vote for your own in 2nd or 3rd place.

Now we have some franchises represented as racers we can start a new job.

Job 5
Submit items based off character-repped franchises
Items in Indie 500 are a bit different compared to Mario Kart, each item is categorized in 4 different colors to represent their role:
Red Items (Offensive Items) (Shells, Bomb-ombs)
Blue Items (Defensive Items) (Tanuki, Super Horn)
Green Items (Mobility Items) (Mushrooms, Thunder Cloud)
Purple Items (Transformation Items) (Bullet Bill, Mega Mushroom)
When you pick up consecutive item boxes you can upgrade that item and make it more potent. You can upgrade an item up to 2 times, meaning each item has 3 levels of power. Submit up to 3 items, each one a different category, and detail what each level of power does. It can only be from the following franchises:

Pizza Tower
Cuphead
Shovel Knight
Undertale

Job 6

Submit an air-based course
This track will be the final of our vehicle focused tracks, this time focusing on the plane, though the hovercraft and kart can be used. Submit a track based off an existing Indie franchise and it has to be a location with a high focus on air-based racing, however, it can't be from the Celeste franchise as that's already repped. Detail the basic design and layout of the course, any major gimmicks and such, and how many laps the course has, among other important information.

Level 2: Mini John grows legs are starts chasing the nearest opponent.
Level 3: Mini John becomes Pillar John and now acts more like a Bowser Shell.

Level 1: A blue bone trails the player, if anyone enters the vicinity of this item the bone get's launches at the target.
Level 2: The blue bone now splits into three and spins around the player like a shield, protect the player from moving obstacles, but not static obstacles.
Level 3: When opponents touch the blue bones their controls reverse.

Deep Dish-9
Pizza Tower
Plane
4 Laps

What's the best place for an air course? Space, of course, and Deep Dish-9 is a pretty cool space level. The stage is the first to introduce changes in the racetrack as the laps go on, the main focus of the track is a planet that may or may not be made out of cheese, the place is a perfect place for some aerial maneuvers with craters leading to a large vat of boiling nacho cheese, however in the distance you can see a larger space ship shaped like Pizzaface in the distance slowly being bombarded by asteroids. As the laps go on pieces of the ship will crash land replacing the more rocky layout with a mechanical one. In the first lap you just have to fly around the asteroid, avoiding nacho cheese geysers, in lap 2 a piece of the ship will crash down and now olive ufos are lobbing meteors at you, by the third lap an entire section of the ship crashes down and now you have to deal with pistons trying to crush you and laser beams from the security system., finally in lap 4 the entire stage becomes mechanical and you have to deal with the pistons and nacho geyser at the same time, a very hectic course indeed.

Track Name: Flying Machine
Series: Shovel Knight (2014)
(Air)
Laps: 3

I think this is perfect for an air track since the level in Shovel Knight fully takes place in the skies at dusk.

You'll start in kart form on a floating platform with propellers and drive off turning into plane form, might as well split this into 3 laps...
Lap 1
flying things.png

You find yourself flying through the skies with uh... whatever those things are... Not much about it.
Lap 2
maxresdefault (18).jpg

Going through the ship with propellers and heavy gusts of wind to throw your plane off course. Enemies like Floatsomes, Hoverhafts, Hover Meanies, and Propeller Rats appear and the Dinghy Dropper as well.
Lap 3
224.jpg

The aerial ship itself appears and starts firing cannonballs at the racers requiring them to avoid and dodge while enemies attack from all sides.

Threatenin' Zeppelin (Cuphead)

Themed after the first airplane level in Cuphead, you zoom past various obstacles but watch out for Hilda Berg! Each lap is themed after the phases in the boss fight in a way with the obstacles being based on the attacks Hilda Berg throws out. The last lap is a combination of the third and fourth phases.
I feel like that stage would fit better as a boss stage, don't know if I'll count this though I recommend changing it

I am not going to do an air track but I do feel Cuphead should get the first boss stage as that is what the game is known for. I will only be submitting those items.

Yeah you can still submit something as long as its plane based, but just so you know I was planning for the first boss to be kart based with the second boss being plane based

I think we have enough items, we should focus on making new tracks before continuing, I don't think it would be right to vote on 2 tracks

I think tommorow I'll end this job, unless if I get a bunch of track submissions, I really need more of those before I can proceed
