Hunters was always an outlier in the Metroid franchise anyways. It was focused on multiplayer which is why they had to come up with the other hunters. Aside from them, Metroid already has the characters it needed to have in Smash as both Ridley and Dark Samus played recurring antagonistic roles throughout the series, and there is the titular Metroid species as well in the form of an assist trophy. The same cannot be said for other characters.

Just give me a Surface Runner from Metroid 2 remix already jesus why does this banger always get overlooked?
That, and a bombastic remix of the Tallon IV overworld, kinda like the "results screen"/"See you next mission" song from Metroid Prime. I love Metroid Prime but most of the overworld music is too ambient from Smash, but they could make an amped up remix of some of those tunes. The actual Chozo ruins theme tune, maybe not. They could work in a few samples of it into another song though. Kinda like how you hear a lot of Metroid jingles worked into the Metroid BGM in Smash.

What stereotype? I've literally never heard anyone saying that the Metroid games are full of those because of Smash. This seems like a fan made concept.
Certainly no stereotype, but I'd agree that there's been a lack of variation in the Metroid stages. If I weren't already a fan, there'd be little in Smash outside of Brinstar Depths to show me the scope of Samus's adventures. Really surprised Phaaze or the Artifact Temple didn't make it in over Orpheon. SR388 would be nice, too.

This is why Metroid is forever doomed to be "underrepresented".
I've had ridiculous intimations that the super/infant/baby metroid would be a fun curveball character if the AT didn't exist. Multiple jumps, movement like bowser jnr., command grabs, healing mechanic. To throw lore to the wind, have it quickly grow the limbs of different metroid forms for smash attacks and specials ("the strange atmosphere in the world of Smash has caused it to mutate!")

Chozo music has to have spooky choirs, maybe incorporate some Lower Norfair.

Well, between Planet Zebes, Brinstar, Brinstar Depths and Norfair, I'd forgive someone for thinking lava was an emphasis of the series.

Plus there's the infamous Varia suit authorization thing in Other M that even the vaguest of Metroid enthusiasts know about. That centers around lava too.

I've honestly yet to see someone who has crafted their own image of Metroid based solely around the lava stages in Smash. Pretty sure most people's idea is that it's about a bounty hunter in space (that was my first impression after being exposed to Metroid for the first time in Smash 64). I'll consider it a problem if if the general public's view on the franchise starts matching that notion.

The whole scope of a game will never be accurately represented with a few stages in a fighting game, even with the devs' best intentions in my mind for those particular franchises. There are just too many climatic moments and memorable set pieces that it would be a logistical nightmare trying to do them all justice.

I know that Pokemon games have more than two Stadiums and two Leagues. I know that Mario has more than just Mushroom Kingdom. I know that the Legend of Zelda is more than a tall structure overlooking Hyrule. I know Metal Gear has more landscapes other than Shadow Moses. Or that Kirby isn't just in Dreamland. I know that DK has more set pieces than jungles. But a lot of these franchises also follow certain aesthetic themes for their presentations. A theme that is also tied to the earliest levels of a game, therefore everyone who plays it is bound to remember them regardless if they finish the game or not. So it's no wonder why most stages tend to be reflected off the starting points of those games: Kongo Jungle, Jungle Japes, Mushroom Kingdom, Peach's Castle, Green Greens, Brinstar, Corneria, Brigate Orpheon, Green Hill Zone, Umbra Clock Tower, Midgar, Skyloft. Luigi's Mansion, Delfino Plaza, Yoshi's Story, both Yoshi's Islands, both Mute Cities, Jungle Hijinx, Dreamland, etc.

For the record, I genuinely don't understand the support for Phendrana Drifts. First, ice stages aren't hugely popular because of their physics. Second, what part of Phendrana specifically? Third, ice stages aren't unique to Metroid. Mario, Kirby, DK, Pokemon and Zelda feature them prominently in most of their games. I rarely think of ice stages when I think Metroid, so better take them from Ice Climber because ice is their whole shtick, or add Homecoming Hijynx because that was the theme for DK Tropical Freeze. I would rather advocate for the flagship Olympus from Corruption during the space pirate assault. SR388 would be a tough one because the areas of that game have a thematic issue. Perhaps set it around one of the Chozo gates and have poison on both sides (hey, it's not lava nor acid).
Never understood the issue with Orpheon. It's a space station, and Samus tends to visit lots of those. That place teaches you to play the game and kickstarts her adventure in Prime. And I don't mind Brinstar Depths because the lava isn't part of the stage's gameplay and because it features iconic villain Kraid turning the stage around, which is a rather unique feature and one of the series' best tunes. That stage actually left an impression in me because it showed that there was a cool looking Godzilla-esque monster that I would have to fight.

It's less a full idea of the scope and more the lack of focus on creative variation. It’s also not that this is resulting in people getting tame impressions of Metroid environments, more that it’s not going to do anything to push the opposite. I’d be curious about how the Kirby games encapsulate both Fountain of Dreams and Halberd, or how Mother transitions from the very human Onett to the monstrous New Pork City. There’s little in this vein for Metroid barring Brinstar Depths, as I said and as you touched on – you want to know what that Godzilla is. By contrast, Orpheon and Pyrosphere are relatively standard sci-fi designs (the latter also crippled by the Ridley debacle); and Norfair and Brinstar both utilize similar environmental hazards despite ‘looking’ opposite.

How about Norfair kept the lava theme, and Brinstar had something like a large Torizo statue that appeared on one side of the stage and spawned an item, sometimes attacking the fighters that take it? The yellow drabness of Brinstar also bothers me as it always had a more ‘lush’ feel in the games. How about exotic Samus eaters on the floor that chew on the fighters, or if the giant scrotum in the background was the creepy Spore Spawn instead?

It's not that I think that this issue is unique to Metroid, either – I’d say Zelda also suffers from this; essentially, it’s particularly notable for series where the varied and distinct environments essentially make up the secondary character of the game, especially if those series happen to be flagships. You touched on something here, too – perhaps a more satisfying collection of stages would be a better balance of early/friendly and late game/boss settings. This could even be implemented effectively in challenge and classic modes – early matches taking place on the relaxed like Green Hill or Gerudo Valley, transitioning to grander stages like Sonic’s various Casino zones or the Dark World overlooked by Death Mountain, and culminating in Final Destination.

FYI, I don't understand support for Phendrana, either. The area was appealing in the context of an atmospheric exploration game, not so much as an arena. Hence my suggestions of Phaaze and SR388. Something playing with the dimensions of Aether would be cool, too. I do like the idea of Olympus bookmarking the 'action' side of Metroid.

If some of the Hunters became assist trophies, would you enjoy that, or would you rather them become fighters?

The Hunters would make good ATs as they all have distinct affinity weapons, and would showcase the unique art style of Prime.

I think the obscurity of Hunters means that both the AT and fighter ship has passed, however. Were they implemented in their prime (heh), I would have liked to have seen a pkmn trainer kind of fighter for Sylux, Weavel, and Trace or Spire. This would have been far preferable to Zero Suit Samus, who should have just been a Samus alt in her Justin Bailey form. Perhaps one of the hunters could have inherited her dexterous playstyle.

Varia Suit. Everyone can wear Samus's suit and it gives full access to her abilities!

Wouldn't that be an elaborate item...

Do you enjoy ZSS's rocket boots, or do you wish that she had a different method of attacking?
I don't really care. It's not like she has any other alternative to the stun gun.

It's just a product of ZSS being an apology for being unable to think of ways to implement other Metroid characters. I maintain that Ridley's difficulties were understandable.

I think ZSS wasn't a great addition to the roster to begin with, and the rocket boots are an admission of that. They had to invent something to make the character interesting enough for the roster, which is kind of a slap in the face when Dark Samus and Ridley would have made for much better characters even back in Brawl, without any creative license. This got really silly after the Sakurai interview where he said Ridley wouldn't work because shrinking him down would make the character "not Ridley anymore," but giving ZSS rocket boots is okay.

The wait for Dark Samus and Ridley paid off, because their renditions in Ultimate are perfect (well, DS is an Echo Fighter without a unique moveset, but the model and animations are perfect). If we'd gotten Ridley or Dark Samus in Brawl or Smash 4, their art wouldn't be nearly as good as it is in this game. So 10 years without them were rewarded with making them look as better than most other characters, frankly.

Dark Samus may have worked, yes, but Ridley? They couldn't just copy his Prime model (organic rendition or not) and make a playable character out of it. They needed a model with the right arm-to-torso-to-leg ratio for it to work. Ultimate just had them throw their hands up and make a model from scratch.

Seriously, it seems no one realizes how hard it was to make Ridley not only smaller, but fitting that way.

Personally I think the rocket boots were super lame. They could have done so much more but they didn't.

As for Ridley, I understand Sakurai's previous logic but I'm still happy that he's in.

Do you think, in the late future, MP4 music could make it in as DLC? FOr that matter, could any music be added as DLC instead of costumes/stages/fighters?

Sakurai's the kind of guy who wants to move on from a project. I can't really see his team giving major long-term support like with Splatoon.

I completely understand the difficulty in getting Ridley to work as a playable character, which is why I give Sakurai a lot of praise for his work with him in Ultimate. Ridley is pretty much perfect in Ultimate, both in design and moves, but that took a lot of thought and work, which is why he'd been so doubtful of the idea for so long.

But they would've had to make a model from scratch anyways. The only time I think they haven't made models from scratch is when they maybe borrowed some for the very first game from other N64 titles where applicable, but they've almost always had to give characters new proportions, even if the changes are subtle. Mario's proportions in Melee don't match his proportions in Sunshine, for example.

Personally, I'm most impressed with how they handled Ridley's wings. Probably the biggest problem with his canon designs was that his wings were either hilariously tiny or impractically huge, making just the act of scaling down not work. Bagan's Ridley hack fell into the latter trap.

But they resolved the issue by making his wings long but not wide. That way, it still looks intimidating without being confusingly big.

I'm happy with Ridley, granted some of his proportions are....annoying.

Aside from Ridley and ZSS, do you have any other complaints with the movesets of Metroid characters?

Do you have problems with his Smash design, or his canon designs? I personally like all of them.

Anyway, I stand by my opinion that Varia Samus needs projectile normals. She doesn't deserve to look so underwhelming next to Mega Man and Mii Gunner.

Eternally agreed. I really don't understand Sakurai's apparent concern about alienating current players. There's a gradient through which you can make a character more accurate to their source material: visual changes (model, stance, taunts, animations) > attribute changes (weight, speed, etc.) > visual changes to moves while keeping the same or similar frame data/knockback, etc. > addition of attributes to certain moves (sweetspots, elemental effects) > replacement of moves generally considered bad > significant replacement of multiple moves > complete revamp.

Samus could do with any and all of these.

What items from Metroid would you be most excited to use if they were added?
For items, I can think of a few.

High Jump Boots: Wearing these boots will increase the player's vertical full jump by 1.5x.

Space Jump: This item allows the user an extra mid-jump.

Speed Booster: Picking up this block will grant the user increased speed on par with Sonic.

Grapple Beam: The user's grab is now a tether grab for a period of time. He or she can now z-air and use this as a recovery tool as well.

X-Ray Visor: You found your opponent's weak spot! Now your attacks temporarily deal additional damage while this item is in effect.

To be fair, Sakurai's apparent fear of alienating players is just speculation.

Besides, some of the changes managed to alienate me anway. I don't want Bowser to be a wrestler nor Link to have those BotW mechanics.

That makes sense. It would be better to put something new on a newcomer instead of an older fighter.
The opposite could also be true - that is, have a new fighter or echo "inherit" a classic fighter's moves and attributes, while giving the original a couple of new tools to try out. It would make sense to make Samus heavier while keeping Dark Samus "floaty", for example, or to have a Dry Bowser echo with melee-style moves.

Now that you mention it, Samus would probably be better as a heavyweight. It's confusing for her to launch easily whilst being in a suit of armor.
