Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

This isn't to be seen as a jab coming from an Isabelle detractor (which isn't what I am), but lemme ask: what would make her work differently enough from Villager? I'm rather curious about this.

My preferred idea is a more pacifistic fighting style focused on terraforming the stage by enacting ordinances and completing public works projects. The best comparison I can give is Phoenix Wright in UMvC3. She'd trip while carrying a stack of paperwork, toppling it onto an opponent. She'd set up gardens that, should she stand on them, she gets healed for a while. She'd plant a tree that bees would swarm around, so foes knocked into it would be stung. Basically fighting by not fighting, but by creating a small town out of the stage to suit her goals, kind of like Wright's evidence collecting powering him up.

I could probably have explained it better, but that's a rough idea.

Couldn't have thought of a better way to jinx Phoenix's chances in Smash. You're an ass man.

(I kid.)

It resembles what I had in mind when thinking about her, but I'm sure there are plenty of other Nintendo character who can fit that bill. Even if she's undeniably the most popular atm. Man, projecting myself into the realm of brand new gameplay possibilities in Smash sure helps further stimulate my inner speculative sense and my excitement for the next Smash Bros. title.

That would be cool. I always thought they should have a summoner type character like that who doesn't actually do any fighting with their own body. I think someone from Advance Wars would work like that too.

There's also lots of other AC mechanics and items left out of Villagers moveset. Emotions as attacks, bubble wands to create floating traps, party poppers, toy hammers, pinwheel recoveries, stuff like that. Her fighting kit is a hidden gem, you don't really see her potential until someone points out what she can do and then it all clicks into place. If the devs see this potential then she's one of the more likelier characters to be added.

Makes sense. I'd argue it's their 6th or 7th largest franchise considering it's been a hit on every console since N64 (Barring Wii U, but that was filled in with a 3DS release)
I mean, TECHNICALLY it had a Wii U release, but the less people remember about Amiibo Festival the better. :p

Predictions:

5: Ice Climbers. Technical issues shouldn't be a problem anymore, but I could see other factors getting in the way of their return.

4: Wolf. Should be easy enough to handle and is easily one of the more popular cut veterans.

3: At least one ballot runner-up: I wouldn't be surprised if some other third-party characters were among the top 10 or 5, and K. Rool would probably be around there too. I'd like to think at least one of them is going to be considered again because of that. I'm still disappointed only the character with the most votes from the ballot got in Smash 4. There's no telling what other characters got nearly as many votes as Bayonetta did, though, so maybe some of them weren't eligible to begin with for other reasons while those who might've been had far less votes. I won't get into that in this post though.

2: Inkling. Should be a no brainer. The success of Splatoon has been huge. The only potential problem I can see with an Inkling getting in is moveset possibilities, but that's it. And it might not be a problem at all.

1: A new Pokemon character. Haven't kept up with the Pokemon scene enough to know who's among the most popular and promoted ones currently, but it's been stated that Pokemon are mainly chosen via their current popularity with help from the Pokemon devs themselves, if I recall right. Cuts from Pokemon or not, I think it's only fair to assume we'll be seeing at least a single new one.

Honestly, I feel rather iffy on an ARMS character getting in the game. For one thing, it's an entirely new IP, and while it's definitely being pushed and promoted, I don't think it's that different from how Splatoon was being promoted when it was first revealed and hadn't come out yet, and we didn't see Inklings in Smash 4. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time a character from a very new game got in with some promotional assistance in mind, and the genre is different from Splatoon's, being more fighter-based like Smash itself, so maybe that raises their odds a bit.

Wanted:

5: Ice Climbers. Chain grabbing or not, Smash 4 hasn't felt quite the same to me without them.

4: Bandana Waddle Dee. I think the little guy's a welcome addition to Kirby's cast, and a character wielding a spear like that has some potential. Sure, it sounds like a simple idea on paper, but it's greater range and design alone could make it give a very different kind of playstyle from many other melee weapon-wielding characters. It's a simple concept, for sure, but not one without potential.

3: Ridley. It's Ridley. Metroid is great and he's an iconic Nintendo villain. With the current circumstances though he's more than very likely not happening.

2: Tetra. I don't want to say she'd be a great character just because "she's a pirate" or anything like that, but hey, Hyrule Warriors did some interesting stuff when she was added, I think Smash could do the same. Her fighting abilities haven't really been explored in the main series, sadly. I wouldn't be disappointed if she got in Smash in any form, though, mainly because the Wind Waker has a special place in my heart and Tetra's been one of my favorite video game characters for a long time now.

1: King K. Rool. Been my most wanted character for a while now and that's coming from someone who admittedly doesn't have much experience playing DK games. I just think he's a wonderful iconic villain from the franchise and that he's got loads of potential to be a great fighter. There's so many different attacks and abilities to choose from, there's no telling precisely what Sakurai would do with him should he finally get his chance to join the fight.

People actually expecting a seventh FE character when Sakurai almost didn't put six due to being too much in is fairly stupid.

If we're talking about a port at least.

If you're talking about a brand new one and expecting cuts then, disregard the above.

I'm with you and I'm not.

On one hand, he did say FE had too many characters, on the other hand, he also said Corrin was a strategic choice.

Regardless of his beliefs, he may still do it. It's not like he didn't feel the same way before he added Corrin.

With that, I doubt he'll just do it, especially just for the mobile game. If he does do it, it will probably be for the big game coming to Switch, and even then I have my doubts unless it's a new Smash Bros like you mentioned, but who knows?

Females? Villains? Black?

No, we need more spherical characters.
We need more quadrupled characters. :ivysaur::4duckhunt:

I would love to see Wolf Link (with Midna riding on him) since it gives us a new quadrupled character and a new non-clone Zelda character.

The next step would be to add an actual helicopter to Smash.

It's the most logical step Sakurai could take :p
I would like at least a character who summons a helicopter to recover.

Infantry Unit from Advance Wars for Smash!

I see a Ubisoft character being a bit likelier now.
Rayman and the Prince of Persia are the only Ubisoft characters I would like to play in Smash.

Predictions
5. Wolf. Star Fox is relevant again, meaning he's likely higher priority than he previously was. It also helps that he's one of only two veterans who don't either have baggage or are potentially low priority themselves.
4. Another third party. They've been adding crossover characters at a modest pace, so I could see one or two here. I'm hesitant to name exact names because third parties are notoriously hard to predict aside from a couple past cases (Sonic and Pac-Man), but if I had to pick the most likely ones, I'd say Rayman, a Monster Hunter, or another Square-Enix character. Maybe Bomberman, but he has some unanswered questions.
3. Ice Climbers. Spent Smash 4 so far on what amounts to the DL because having too many pairs fighting at once was screwing up the 3DS version--probably causing lag. The Switch is much more powerful, so the only thing that kept them out isn't keeping them out any more...unless 8-Player Smash and eight sets of climbers is too much.
2. A Gen 7 Pokémon. It's funny, for how much this one stares in people's faces, you don't see Pokémon characters pop up on many roster predictions...except in this thread, apparently; nicely done. Nintendo's second biggest IP has a plethora of viable new characters with each new generation, it's the only series to gain at least one newcomer in every single Smash game so far, and Sun and Moon have sprung into the spotlight at the perfect time. Decidueye's the frontrunner here, but with how many unique options Gen 7 in particular has, I wouldn't rule out more than one Pokémon newcomer if we see enough new content or another round of DLC.
1. Inkling. Goes without saying, pretty much. Sakurai has a history of waiting on characters from brand new IPs to see how they pan out, which is probably why they were passed on for DLC. But now Nintendo's newest stars have proven they have staying power, and they certainly have the unique abilities and moveset potential to make them compelling newcomers.

Worth mentioning that I'm not very confident about Spring Man. I think they'll wait to see how ARMS does first to ensure they don't jump the gun, just like how they waited on the Inklings for DLC, Wii Fit Trainer for Brawl, and Olimar for Melee.

Wants
5. Isaac. A spellsword character with earth-based magic that is nearly nonexistent on the roster so far? Count me in, even though he needs the Smash Ballot to stand a chance.
4. Either Terra or Black Mage. The fantasy theme continues with the two Final Fantasy characters I'd be most interested in seeing. Both have proficiency with magic, and potentially with unique mechanics: Black Mage with mana points used to cast his specials and stronger attacks, and Terra's ability to Trance into her half-esper form for short periods of time.
3. Lycanroc. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree (heh), or maybe I've been noticing something people are overlooking. The total lack of earth users so far means there's a niche wide open for the taking, and the two (potentially more) forms could be utilized in some really interesting ways. Pseudo-transformation that avoids the issues that got previous full transformations cut, anyone?
2. Krystal. You know, sometimes I end up kind of...sympathizing with a character. Krystal has an unfair reputation in places, scapegoated for "ruining" Star Fox by the series' genwunners and for being a Rule 34 magnet as if every other main character in the series isn't also. And now the newest Star Fox game is yet another retread of 64 that leaves her out in the cold. But, she made a lot of waves in the Smash Ballot, and her ability to mix battlestaff techniques with a combination of both magic and technology is something literally no other character can lay claim to. Who knows?
1. ...Actually, I'm gonna wait on this one for a few days. Let's just say another challenger is approaching soon, though its chances rely on something happening that's unlikely but not entirely out of the question.

Apparently I have a thing for magic users and elemental powers. Honorable mentions go to Decidueye, King K. Rool, Alm or Celica (*raises flame shield*), Hunter, Amaterasu, maybe Lloyd, Geno, anyone from Bravely Default/Second, Rex if we're still getting more content when Xenoblade 2 drops, and Alolan Ninetales, like that'll ever happen.
We both know Delphox is number one :p
Elemental powers, the total lack of mentioning of it in your post, your reasoning of how "they probably looked at other gen VI Pokémon as well" matching up with your hint of "might've been planned" (or since it was in Isaac's video, "might've been plant")
That reasoning is also "something happening that's unlikely but not entirely out of the question."

So yeah case closed. Looking forward to the next video.

You won't get sympathy an expectation list from me, for the sole reason of others having said what I wanted to say.
Not going to beat a dead squid on this one.

Want list is:

1. Every Mario character except Geno
Gimme Birdo with a Suction Snout mechanic*, Toad with a fast anti-air moveset with Mario Kart-elements*, Petey Piranha with an Inkling-light (or rather, Inkling heavy) moveset, King Boo and his spectral shenanigans.
Just don't give me Geno.
Mallow on the other hand would be amazing (as a Cloud clone :4pacman)

Out of these characters, Daisy* dances in my mind the most with a Superball-centric set.

*means I've made movesets for them.

2. Nabbit and similar characters
Nabbit deserves a special mention for being the best video game character of all time but the real reason that he gets a spot of his own is that there are characters that remind me of him (and they're all family in my headcanon)
Examples are Il Piantissimo, Ravio, Kilton and even the Happy Mask Salesman and Fire Emblem's Henry fit the bill for headcanon reasons

3. Zelda characters
Zelda representation is a mess and we need an unique newcomer to fix that.
My three favorites are Wolf Link (Midna can stay an AT for all I care), Kilton and Impa
Wolf Link would be a quadruped fighter and also a wolf and from there he can just have two attacks and I'd still main Woofer.
Just ask Kenith for the juicy moveset details, I'm here for my BoTW best bud.

Kilton would not fix any of the issues the roster has right now but he's like Ravio except Kilton's moveset wouldn't be a random throw-together of power-ups.
Kilton would instead rep BoTW as a whole by summoning Monsters with Masks, which he can kill to cook juicy elixrs using their intestines.

Impa would be the only one that can save the Zelda roster since she's so interwoven (I'm a kid now, That's a word now) with so many roles in the Zelda series (all with their own moveset potential)

Time-Travel/Manipulation? Hylia's Warrior can do so

Heck, although Gate of Time is mostly seen as an Up Special, it has so much potential to the point of it being the core of her moveset, just like the Clown Car, in most movesets an Up Special at best, became Jr's niche.

Breath of the Wild's Runes? Kohga says Magnesis is a family trait, thus Sheikah magic might be the origin of the runes.
What's more, she can use the Puzzle Orbs together with Stasis and her bamboo boomerang hat.

4. Seventh Gen Pokémon
Although Sun n Moon hype has waned for me, I still think the Seventh Gen Pokés would be really cool for Smash.

Of course, there's Owl Ghost Archer, but my favorites are actually Lycanroc and Nihilego.

5. Fiyah Emblem
Azura was my Most Wanted during DLC speculation (which made Corn's reveal the biggest case of "So close yet so far" in an almost taunting way, especially with Lost in Thoughts all Alone playing in the trailer)
The main reason why I support her is actually a Fire Emblem tactic: Role compression.
Previously, I needed to support Dee for some spear action (still do though), Squirtle for water manipulation that extends beyond visually blue hitboxes, Jimmy T. for a dancing flair and potentionally a Rhythm Heaven character for rhythm/musical attacks.
Now I get all these niches and pieces of moveset potential in an anime girl package.

For a no-hoper, Jakob would be pretty cool as an user of all the non-healing staffs.

Anyway, here's my top 5:

1, Daisy
2. Nabbit
3. Kilton
4. Nihilego
5. Wolf Link

Since everyone is doing these prediction lists I'll just jump in here.
1&2) Inkling + Ice Climbers: for obvious reasons
3) Isabelle: I've made my love of her pretty clear. Also AC is a best seller on every single console since the GC era.
4) Dixie: K. Rool has been missing from the newer games for over a decade while Dixie has been playable in the most recent one. She also has the ponytail and a variety of unique mechanics to up her chances.
5) Ashley/Takamaru/Mimikyu/Decidueye: They're all popular characters with potential unique mechanics so I can't say which is more likely at this point. My money is on Ashley or Mimikyu but I'm biased towards them.

I hate quadraped characters, it makes me feel like I'm beating up on an animal, which I know is weird, since a lot of the characters in game are literally animals, but yeah.

I'd be fine with more characters with Pikachu, Diddy Kong, and Donkey Kong type movement though.

Quadrupeds are fine if they're cartoony.

So :ivysaur::4duckhunt: are fine, in my opinion.

Especially :ivysaur:.

Please come back :ivysaur:.

If we're changing up which part of the evolutionary line is playable, I'd much rather have :003:. :p

Seriously though. Venusaur would be amazing.
Meh.
Personally, I'd prefer Bulbasaur over Venusaur because it'd better fit Ivysaur's style than Venusaur's fat butt would. :V

And because of this.

Here's an interesting question-Do you personally believe an indie character is deserving of being a playable Smash character?

Not really. If they're popular enough, sure. But I don't think any indie has broken that threshhold.

I have nothing against indies, it's just that I don't think Shantae and Shovel Knight are Smash material.

Lol that's not an interesting question but my answer is that Sakurai picks characters and he sure as heck doesn't pick them through silly criteria such as deservesyness so it doesn't matter.

But I'm a bit tired of 3th parties and discussion on them in general.
Like, I'd take another Seventh Gen Cirklejerk Party over more discussion about "yeh but bayo"

Just talk about Post-BoTW Zelda representation since the last time I saw Zelda discussion was when Tetra was still relevant

I'd say so, but I'm probably biased as I adore Shantae.
Realistically, an indie character probably needs a huge following to get into Smash, something I'd say none of those currently in the running has. They'd also require something that sets them far apart from every other character on the roster like Shantae's transformations, or whatever the hell Shovel Knight does that's unique. They're more of a pipe dream at the moment but there's always hope.
But yeah like WeirdChill said, let's not get into another indie discussion.

What PsychoJosh said, but ultimately, there's isn't really any rules when Sakurai considers a character; he just picks whoever the hell he wants.

Considering that, and the fact that there's already been a trophy of an indie character, I think the chances are there.

A good example would be Shovel Knight, who embodies the NES era of gaming, so he could fit well alongside the retro characters.

I disagree. The only game I can think of that was even remotely like Shovel Knight on the NES was Zelda 2. I don't think he really embodies what that era was all about.

Really? Not even DuckTales? You know, the game that inspired Shovel Knight's bouncing technique?

I thought it was more reminiscent of Link's down stab. But Ducktales didn't have a world map or shops where you bought upgrades. I was referring to the overall style of the game.
