Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Maybe about time Nintendo used people of different colors in their main games?

There's no reason why a game like Fire Emblem or even Mario shouldn't have a black character for example.
Um, wasn't Ferox in FE Awakening basically Africa if it had European middle-age tech? With both of their Khans (AKA leaders) powerful late game units and useful allies even before then?

Basilio

Flavia

Of course, they're relatively minor characters with no chance of getting into smash, but it's something, at least...

I always find it funny when someone responds to a sentence with a paragraph. One thing people on Smashoards ever figured out is that if you want to respond to an argument, you should probably respond to the whole thing instead of doing word soup. This is one of those cases.
And it probably will continue to exist as long as the rumours prove at least semi-valid (which they are), ports do happen (and thrive), a Smash port continues to make about as much sense as a Mario Kart port. I'm not saying optimism isn't playing a part in why everyone might seem so dogmatic, but on the other hand it's not as if nothing has come from the rumours, as is the picture you're painting.

Moreover, you're painting with quite broad strokes here. It's hardly the case that every leaker tied the amiibos and the port together, but more importantly, and this doesn't just apply to you, people really never seem to account that plans change internally all the time. I'm not giving full credence to the leakers, but viewing everything in such a black and white situation is only to the detriment of those who get invested, such as yourself.

Also I do believe something is up with the amiibos. I can only guess as to what, for all I know PushDustin's postulation about Cloud is correct, but I do think there's more than meets the eye with their seemingly arbitrary release. Might the Smash port release with more characters than expected? Might it release later than expected? Might it not release at all? I've no idea. But there's definitely more to the story here. This can't have been what Nintendo was originally intending to do with these three characters.
First, the rumors weren't semi-valid. They were just flat out wrong. Laura Dale (who was the source of these rumors primarily) was wrong about almost everything. Most of what she got right was from images. I've done this too.

Your argument is "Ports real" and tries to work backwards. You say "What if the plans change." OK, what if there never was a plan in the first place. The amiibo could have also been delayed because Cloud had legal issues (also why he doesn't have an English voice or new music like the other guest characters). Occam's Razor. It's more likely it was legal issues and not some magic port. You say there is "more to the story." Well, what is it. You're basically making leaps of faith.

It's pretty myopic to list all those Smash figures and still not see why Nintendo would also want Smash on the Switch sooner than later...
If you had looked at the argument as a whole instead of in this weird lego mess, you'd realize the argument is that Mario Kart is more important and crucial to Nintendo's success. Smash has never been on the same level.

Smash 4 sold a little bit under 14 million. If you account for double purchases, you would probably have sales around 11 million, which isn't that much of a difference from Brawl. Mario Kart 8 sold 8 million, but Mario Kart 7 sold 15 million, about a 7 million difference. A reason Deluxe can exist (besides the whole the director of the series is working on AMRS) is because Mario has that cross over appeal. Deluxe could do better. There is not much evidence Smash would do better.

Such rankings are entirely beside the point when both are as profitable as they are. Do you think Nintendo sees the imperative to port on a basis of the performance of one unrelated title, or do you think it's based on the fact that the game in question was also highly profitable and hindered by its platform?

And I'm afraid you're the one with the misconception here. The ranking of the two is largely irrelevant to why people believe a Smash port will follow. It's because both not only share status as triple A Nintendo series limited by the system they were on, but because both fit under the paradigm of piecemeal content being enough to resurge an interest in an already-release game. That's why the two are compared.

When you're a triple-a series... it doesn't really matter where the other series rest in comparison to you for a remake/remaster/port to, generally, make sense.
OK, then why is Splatoon a sequel instead of a port. It's a AAA title (outsold MK8 weekly sales). It fits under the paradigm of piecemeal content. It's comparable, but it's getting a sequel.

So does the drummer not come to the concert just because more people latch onto the singer? Bad analogy.
No, its people like and know the singer more than the drummer. How did you not get this analogy?

...and that's why Mario Kart was first. Like your argument is a good one for why MK should be first. Not why there shouldn't be a Smash port. You literally keep saying how profitable Smash Bros. is. And that Switch ports happen to get the series on the platform asap.

It's also much easier to make a full-fledged sequel to Splatoon than it is for Smash... at least with Sakurai involved.
This is some serious mental gymnastics.

You're saying that Mario Kart came "first" because it sold more. But this assumes that Smash port is going to happen at all and it also assumes that sales are the main factor for why one title gets released before another. But then why would Mario come out so late compared to other games.

And how do you know its easier to make a sequel to Splatoon. Did you talk to Sakurai? Does your uncle work at Nintendo? In order for your argument to make sense, you have to make all these far-reaching assumptions.

No, they weren't. It's a mix of unconfirmed, right, and wrong, and posing it differently is twisting the narrative. MK was rumoured to get a port before the Switch trailer and did, in fact, get a port. That was one true. Splatoon was rumoured to get a port and isn't. Whether Splatoon 2 started life as a deluxe Splatoon or not, the claims were either wrong or outdated enough to be of little reliability. XCX was also claimed to be getting a port but likely won't, due to XC2. The rest, we don't yet know about. Speaking definitively about them, expecting to be right, doesn't make you look clairvoyant or particularly astute, it makes to look like you're speaking out of turn and, in turn, unreliable.
So we have two wrong and one right so this means a Smash port could still happen. You'd ever think that because they were saying every game gets ported that they may have been right about one of them. And keep in mind, we had footage of both Splatoon and MK8 but they claimed both would be ported. Your reasoning also ignores that the rumors were wrong about everything else. Again, this is reaching.
Why not make a new Mario Kart? Because porting is cheaper and faster. And clearly still profitable nonetheless. It also wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo was doubling down on getting lots of software out early in the Switch's lifespan.
The director of Mario Kart is working on ARMS.

And really, you're talking some nonsense with this it has to be bigger than MK "rule". You are aware titles like Xenoblade, DKCR and Hyrule Warriors got ports this past gen, right? None of those are even as big as Smash, let alone MK. It's because Nintendo wants to expose them to a new/different audience and garner sales from people who wouldn't otherwise own the system, but still be interested in the game. That's why pretty much all ports exist.

Probably because it would sap attention away from ARMS whereas MK does not overlap much in terms of targeted demographics. Nintendo is literally pushing another, smaller, character-driven fighting game right now, and has been since January. Think about it for a minute.

Also it could be because it's not planned to be launching in the coming months... ports don't necessarily need excess promotional time...
So you clearly missed what I was saying here.

The reason you do the port is to get something out quick. This is why MK8 came out within 2 months. By the time a Smash port would come out, it would be at a time when consumers would consider it lazy. You don't want to buy ports in September. You want some new games. If consumers wanted Wii U ports, they would have bought a Wii U. Mario Kart at least has shown to sell a crap ton of units. Smash has never sold 15 million let alone 30 million. Mario Kart has that crossover appeal. The window to which consumers would be OK with ports is about to pass. It would be at the point to where Nintendo would just be better served to take 6 months to a year and make a full fledged game.

Also, if ARMS was the reason for not showing the port, then why would they show it at E3. ARMS wont be out until after E3. So if the sole reason Smash hasn't been shown is because of ARMS, then why show it before ARMS is out.

You're talking about E3, right? It seems plainly evident why Nintendo didn't show MK. The Switch trailer came out in September, and the game launched in April. There was no E3 between those times. If there was, it would've been there.
I mean, there wasn't like this huge event where Nintendo showed off all their upcoming games for the system or anything.

So, let's break down this argument. Smash port is going to happen because Smash is just as big as Mario Kart. There is more to the amiibo story, maybe. The rumors were partly true so it could still happen (even though they weren't as I had to pay $300 with no 3D Mario). Splatoon 2 exist because Splatoon is so easy to make; my uncle told me so. Mario Kart 8 just came first because it sold and Nintendo said that Smash should be held off and not shown until E3 because it sold less. Nintendo makes all of their releases based on units moved. The only reason we didn't see it is because ARMS is out and Smash would compete with it. Smash will be shown at E3 even though ARMS comes out after E3 but that doesn't matter. Also, the Nintendo Presentation doesn't exist and if it did exist we would have seen Mario Kart 8 deluxe there. Also, drummers go to shows.

This is the number of assumptions you have to make for a Smash port

A big reason you should respond to my argument as a whole is because clearly you missed a lot. Like, I don't know, the fact that the director of MK8 is working on AMRS and maybe that's why they are making Deluxe. He even said it was due to trying to get it out ASAP (rather than making it from scratch) which is also why it came out in April. But you skipped that part because it doesn't support your wild theories.

The arguments for a Smash port always fall flat because you have to make a lot of assumptions for very basic questions. Why are the amiibo just coming out? "Oh, there is more to it." Weren't all the rumors that claimed there was a Smash port all wrong." Well, they weren't all wrong (don't click this link)" Why hasn't Nintendo shown it off. "Ohh, its ARMS." OK, why should we expect Nintendo to show off Smash port at E3 when they didn't show off the bigger game at their presentation? "Its not the same." The answer with the fewest variables is the best one. There is no port.

To close, what proponents of a Smash port don't ever ask is "Why doesn't Nintendo just make a new Smash Bros?" The DLC ended in February. It will be almost a year and a half since the game finished. Why not just go a few more months and make a complete game. Even with the limited staff, they still added 7 characters for the DLC. From now until the DLC conclusions has been longer than the development of the DLC. A Smash game usually has about 13 new fighters. If they are making it off the same engine, it wouldn't take that long (or at least not as long as other games in the series have been). You also have Nintendo trying to sell you online. Wouldn't a new Smash be a great way to promote that? Nintendo has always teased a new Smash game about a year and a half before it releases. Why should we assume that Nintendo would break trend now?

I say time converts more than reason because as time has gone on, there is less reason to believe the Smash port. The rumors were fake. The amiibos have a release date. We have yet to see anything for this game. Why should we believe it exists?

There's a severe lack of anything LGBT too, as the only notable characters I can think of are Corrin and Birdo (Vivian, Niles and Rhajat aren't exactly main characters).
Exactly. And most people who support Brido cares for her as a character than her own gender. There's not that many LGBT characters that are major in a Nintendo IP other than Corrin and Birdo.

Niles and Rhajat are out of the question because of "Fire Emblem oversaturation" and being more minor compared to Azura and the the royal siblings.

Vivian is good as irrelevant thanks to The Thousand Year Door's age and Paper Mario's current focus.

No, its people like and know the singer more than the drummer. How did you not get this analogy?

At this point I want to block you because I can't handle as this stupid first thing in the morning
"They were flat out wrong"
"Was wrong about almost everything"
Which one is it? And which other leaks mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy by Telltale? Sure, Laura got that semi-wrong, but NOBODY even played with that idea before Laura mentioned it! Not to mention the fact you proved N3ON right when she said you're thinking too 'black and white' when this isn't a case of black-and-white

But the analogy falls flat because the drummer is still vital to the band, you can't sell a song just with a singer, the instruments are all there to compliment the song and the singer! Your analogy is "You don't go to a concert for a drummer, but for a singer" wasn't it? The drummer is there for a reason!
Sales are a factor. Mario Kart is a better seller, thus, people who didn't buy the Wii U game could think "Hey, it's also on my Switch! Now I can buy it without needing a different console!" Not to mention the fact it turned out to be more of a system seller than BotW which outsold the Switch. They put the more popular game out first because it was a system seller! How do you NOT get this?
"Why would Mario come out so late compared to other games" I have NO clue what the **** you're on about, MK8D came out a MONTH after the console! Or did you mean Odyssey, a game still in development?

"How do you know it's easier to make a sequel? Did you ask Sakurai?" Sakurai has NOTHING to do with the game? Plus, considering the game is very similar to the original, there are quite a few people who believed it was a port when they first showed it off!
"The reason you port something is to get something quick"
Bayonetta's most successful system was the PC if I recall correctly. The PC version is about a month old. Ports are there so the game can sell on multiple systems and depending how easy it is to port, can mean you earn more by doing less.

"If people wanted Wii U ports, they'd have bought a Wii U"
No. The Switch's main gimmick is that you can take it anywhere with you and this major selling point also gets used quite a lot. The Wii U can only go 2 feet away from the console before having connection issues. Plus, what if the Wii U simply didn't have ENOUGH games to justify a purchase for someone? The Switch is already getting quite a large library in comparison to the Wii U's first months, so it's easier to buy that version instead of buying a Wii U which lacked third party support and was seen as too gimmicky
"The arguments for a Smash port always fall flat because you have to make a lot of assumptions for very basic questions" Except that ports are cheaper to make is a good argument, the Switch is more successful meaning it'd be able to sell more copies is a good argument... Not to mention YOUR argument is ****ing braindead "They WILL make a brand new game with a new engine from the ground up which will take a few years to even make instead of easily porting the game for a MUCH lower development cost meaning we could just throw it out and make more money off of it"

When talking of obscure characters...

...Those kind of OCs made by Camelot for the older Mario Golf and Tennis games barely get any mention outside of Plum's trophy in Melee.

The thing about leaks is that they are generally false until proven true but people will believe what they want to believe and you and N3ON obviously have differing opinions on the matter. Leaks are never black and white they are usually a little right and a little wrong. It's very rare for a leak to be 100% fully legit if it comes from a outside source.

If you had looked at the argument as a whole instead of in this weird lego mess, you'd realize the argument is that Mario Kart is more important and crucial to Nintendo's success. Smash has never been on the same level.
Dude. Melee outsold Double Dash. Even if by a marginal amount it still outsold it so the point of it never being on the same level is invalid.
Smash 4 sold a little bit under 14 million. If you account for double purchases, you would probably have sales around 11 million, which isn't that much of a difference from Brawl. Mario Kart 8 sold 8 million, but Mario Kart 7 sold 15 million, about a 7 million difference. There is not much evidence Smash would do better.
I don't understand what you're trying to get at here. They both sell well. Mario Kart and Smash share audiences but they also have different audiences. So why would Nintendo not try to make double profits from two ports. I'm just saying if you're trying to go off of business reasons for a game not having a port you're kind of fighting yourself with this statement.

OK, then why is Splatoon a sequel instead of a port. It's a AAA title (outsold MK8 weekly sales). It fits under the paradigm of piecemeal content. It's comparable, but it's getting a sequel.
You're comparing apples to oranges right here, my friend. Splatoon is very different from MK8 in budget, in gameplay, and in scope. They certainly didn't put all their eggs in one basket with Splatoon.
And how do you know its easier to make a sequel to Splatoon. Did you talk to Sakurai? Does your uncle work at Nintendo? In order for your argument to make sense, you have to make all these far-reaching assumptions.
Well, for one, they obviously reused assets from the original Splatoon when they were making 2. Two, licensing, because Splatoon is fully owned by Nintendo thus no hoops to jump through. Three because it's an online shooter and not a party fighting or racing game meaning that mandatory updates are totally fine and, at this point, expected for such a game.
If consumers wanted Wii U ports they would'v- Wait what? Dude hang on, you're jumping the shark right there. The Switch is much more appealing than the Wii U.

The window for ports is subjective. They're usually well received if they pad out the months for other games, it's only a problem if the whole library is ports. Which it isn't because we're already getting a new Mario, Splatoon 2, and ARMS so it's not a big deal if ports are released at any time in the future.
Also, if ARMS was the reason for not showing the port, then why would they show it at E3. ARMS wont be out until after E3. So if the sole reason Smash hasn't been shown is because of ARMS, then why show it before ARMS is out.
If Nintendo CAN do this right, and I doubt they will, they would show off Smash port with an ARMS character to raise awareness for ARMS and in the process have people looking forward to another one of their games in the future. That's highly unlikely though and they could announce Smash and kill ARMS dead or just not reveal Smash at all.

At this point I want to block you because I can't handle as this stupid first thing in the morning

Gwen, I love ya, but I'm gonna need you to cool it on the name calling, darlin'.

Otherwise I agree with you on most of your views particularly the last part about the ports.

That's because no one wants to address how one of them murdered the real Princess Daisy and took her place for over a decade.....

Someone brought up Tethu. Allow me to mention that during the Treehouse Live at E3 2016, they did say that there was a female protagonist that is yet to be unveiled - a female Tethu or female seedling perhaps? It'd be best to retain this fact when considering both Tethu's chances in Smash and the inclusion of more female (black) characters into the cast :p

Also Corrin being LGBT is hardly even canon considering all pairings are optional. It's not even a defining part of their character as a whole, unlike Niles and Rhajat.

Umm...No. That's not how it works. The fact Corrin has the option at all means Corrin's bisexuality is canon. I could also go into how Niles and Rhajat aren't defined by sexuality, but that's a different topic all together.

Quick question though. Is there a character who anyone here would feel is perfect for Smash but pretty much impossible? Cause I feel Viewtiful Joe would fit in perfectly for some reason

But then we would have to deal with, "Coldsteel the Hedgeheg got in over Tails and Knuckles."

But hey at least Sonic the Werehog would be playable in some form and we have Wolf's perfect DeviantArt replacement.

"Nothing personnel kid" - Coldsteel teh hegdehug who is now kind sorta canon.

Coldsteel for Smash.

Also Sanic, Blonic, Blails, Knuckles the Enchilada, and Buffles for Sonic Boom representation.

The same could've been said about ARMS if we hadn't gotten a Direct... So all will be revealed in due time I think. Or they just scrapped that female character altogether, who knows.

No, Arms has at least gotten more advertisement. Ever Oasis barely has any. Without looking it up, I want you to tell me about the gameplay, the characters, etc. I want the game and didn't know the protag's called Tethu!
Again, this is a different story all together though. Still would like ARMS and Ever Oasis content

I've been following the game closely so I don't need to look it up to tell you all about it. However, much like Golden Sun, it will be 'that J-RPG series who's as doomed in life as it is in Smash except for two pieces of music or whatever'. I do believe he/she (Tethu) is likely to be an Assist Trophy though

It'd be best to retain this fact when considering both Tethu's chances in Smash and the inclusion of more female (black) characters into the cast :p
Where she at though? Is this another Yo-kai Watch scenario where we never see the female main character in anything even though shes a main character?
That's because no one wants to address how one of them murdered the real Princess Daisy and took her place for over a decade.....
These conspiracies surrounding Daisy are just too much. First she's Lip all grown up and now she's a victim of murder and identity theft. When will this rabbit hole end?

I thought of a unique idea for an Arms character.

Have their side special move be the ability to change the type of arms they have equipped.

Why side special? Well if you press left and B it will change their left arm and pressing right and B will change their right arm.

It might seem weird, but seeing how Ryu has different tilts depending of how hard you push the stick and is able to use the SF motion inputs, I don't think this is too crazy of an idea.

Until we accept the fact that the Happy Mask Salesman, the Running Man and his alter-ego Il Piantissimo, Nabbit, Ravio, his reincarnation Kilton and Henry are a big family of dimension-travelling gods we can always go deeper.

Aka how Henry being Nabbit and Daisy's son kinda makes sense if you know that Henry's grandparents are the Happy Mask Salesman and Nabooru.

I'm not interested in ARMS characters in Smash because Spring Man is really boring

The only ARMS characters I could see making it in Smash are Spring Man and Ribbon Girl because they were the first characters shown and the ones on the cover.

Although it could be similar to Bowser Jr. and have lots of alts. Albeit, only some characters work fine. The most important part is their body design is the same overall.

I don't think it would be a good representation.

Aside from different designs, each ARMS character has a different gimmick that makes them unique.

Junior and the Koopalings works because the Clown Car does the majority of their moves, so there was no need to worry about that.

The Mario Rabbids thing is real. Laura had multiple sources, the one that claimed the Rabbids existed was the same one that said the game would be a port

It's more important to show off the series in general. You can also combine some of their properties a tad as well. Being a combination of characters could make it feel very unique.

Long story short, there's more than one approach that could work. Obviously the first two would be the first two costumes regardless, Spring Man being the main character respectively(Ribbon Girl being secondary main). Whether or not they can fit others in, who knows.

Here's an idea to pass time waiting for E3. List the 5 characters you think will be in from least to most likely AND list the five that you personally want with reasons for each, like so.

Prediction List

5. Spring Man: ARMS is making a lot fo positive waves and has a neat fighting concept built inot it's design. It's low on the list because it's still not out yet.
4. Gen 7 Pokemon: Game Freak always likes to have their stuff recent.
3. Animal Crossing character: Animal Crossing has a lot of gameplay potential in aspects not represented in the villagers moveset and the games
2. Donkey Kong Character: It's the last of the original series that's still missing some popular characters and there's rumors of another game on the way
1. Inkling: Splatoon is Nintendo showing not only can they can get modern game ideas like online shooters, they can improve on them. Splatoon has been a big sucess and

Want List

5. Ridley: Because the Dream still won't die.
4. Ribbon Girl: Because we need a multi-jump character that isn't a ballon/doesn't have wings.
3. Krystal: Smash need weaon variety beyond Sword and different Sword.
2. Captain Toad: Those guy's need a Rep not lodged int Peach's bustle.
1. Shantae: With Bayonetta in, her supposed risque-ness should be no problem at all.

Gonna repost my thoughts on the Spring Man/Ribbon Girl stuff I posted 6 pages ago:
A thought I have since the ARMS DIrect, I believe it would not be too :083: to see both Spring Man and Ribbon Girl as ARMS reps next Smash.

Yes, if we have to only pick one it would obviously go to Spring Man.
However, with such a diverse cast it would also be kind of a waste to have only one ARMS character in Smash.

So why not putting a new :marthmelee::roymelee: and add Ribbon Girl as well.
They both share the same morphology, thus it would cost less ressources than another character who have a completely different one, but they can still have some key differences to distinguish them, much like :4ness: and :4lucas:.

Not to mention Nintendo recently stated they intend to make ARMS a recurrent franchise, and I honestly don't see the first ARMS game being a failure sales-wise.

Sounds like fun, so I'll play along.

Predictions
  1. A third-party newcomer - This may sound vague and generic, but both Brawl and 4 did that, so I doubt the next one will be any different.
  2. Inklings - With how successful and acclaimed the Splatoon franchise is, I'm 100% confident they'll make it in the next Smash.
  3. An ARMS character (likely Spring Man or Ribbon Girl) - Considering how much attention Nintendo gives it and how unique it looks, I can see it happen.
  4. A Gen 7 Pokemon - Because there's always a new Pokemon taken from the latest generation of Pokemon games.
  5. Bandana Dee (or any Kirby character, really) - Would tie in to the franchise's 25th anniversary.
What I want to see
  1. Shovel Knight - One of the most famous indie games and Nintendo knows it. It even got an amiibo and Specter of Torment was Switch-exclusive for a time.
  2. Bomberman - Konami recently revived the franchise, so maybe he has an actual chance now?
  3. Wolf - Why wasn't he in Smash 4 again?
  4. Anna - With Heroes making her one of the game's "Lords", I really want to see what could be done with her. Plus, we never got an axe wielder in Smash.
  5. Decloned Ganondorf - Because the King of Evil deserves more than being a mere clone.
Bonus one
  • More Mii fighting styles - Because fist, sword and gun are way too generic...

I think Ribbon Girl and Spring Man can be costumes or quasi-clones with Ribbon Girl having more jumps and aerial speed at the cost to KO power and weight.
