Why do we care if Meleefanbois like Ultimate or not?

The old guard will stick to Melee, and the Smash 4 kiddos will move to Ultimate.


Both can co-exist peacefully.

Most Melee players like Ultimate anyway (sans maybe Mang0 iunno) even if some of them aren't planning to take it seriously. Leffen is the most outwardly critical of it, but he wouldn't be making this much content on it if he hated it.

usually the solution is realizing they're relatively small groups of vocal people who antagonize each other and most people just don't care and if they do they just avoid the other party anyway

my solution is that everyone is wrong anyway.

That would be a wonderful world to live in. But since Melee is the 'best' game for Smash, ultimate have to do better than this game.

Hey I just finished World of Light today. Though I noticed in the credits something that was kind of interesting. I saw ATLUS in companies credited. Is there ATLUS properties in the game already before Joker was announced? Or is it possible it was indeed added in real quick in either the day 1 patch and/or 1.2.0 now that it's known that Joker is eventually coming?

I think it's the Cubivore spirit in the game; Atlus localized the game here.

Leffen is critical of Ultimate because he want the game to be better in terms of support. I don't think any of the top Melee personalities hate Ultimate. I know a lot of Melee PLAYERS probably hate ultimate but they're the same ones that would only move to the new Smash if it was Melee 2 in terms of gameplay.

You say that, but I only ever see Melee fans keep to themselves and play their own game.

Melee as a whole is pretty isolationist as a fandom.

Pretty much- If I do ever see people complain, it's usually on the more casual side.
Of course there's a handful of people who just like to "i'm so smart cause [melee]" antagonize people on the internet all day, but they're really easy to ignore lol
And if you try to call either party out on it they get super defensive.

The best smash game is the one whoever is playing likes the best as far as I care.

As long as Ultimate represents a threat to take away Melee's spots/popularity in the competitive scene while simultaneously being very much NOT Melee, the Melee community is going to be simultaneously salty and hostile.

Not that the Ultimate community isn't hostile in it's own right, as much of it doesn't want anything like Melee in the newer games, and the popularity of Melee still causes pressure on Nintendo. Almost all of the competitive inclusions in both Sm4sh and Ultimate can be attributed to Melee's community.

The communities CAN'T just let bygones be bygones unfortunately

Melee was NOT fine before Evo. Currently it's.... lets say believable that the Melee community could survive without it, but it was absolutely not as good Pre-Evo. Evo did a lot for the Melee community.

But you're not the first to say that Melee doesn't need Evo anymore, hell even Leffen has been so critical of the event that he claims they should just leave it. I am still of the opinion that loosing that spot would do more harm than good. Evo will never not be massive, and it introduces a lot of people into a community that is usually stranded on it's own island. Melee is disowned by both the FGC and the rest of the Smash community so there aren't many avenues to make that connection.

But it doesn't matter what I think. Simply put the Melee community doesn't feel they should loose that spot. Not just because Ultimate is a thing anyways.

Plus, fans do have a massive amount of sway, looking at things like how Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was brought back to 2017 EVO and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was excluded from 2018's lineup.

They really aren't that bad. As someone who is really into melee I promise that the vast majority of spectators and players aren't purists. There's like a few youtube commenters who are asshats but for the most part, the melee community either plays other games in the series or just doesn't care about them
