Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Do you think we're going to get a repeat of Smash 4's dlc with the characters being added being godly good?
Yes.
But on the other hand, Sakurai and co. will probably stick around to balance them this time so that we don't get GF EVO 2018 part deux.

Brawl's selection was alright, but it felt "expected" if you ask me. Legendary Air Ride Machine over City Trial's Theme was the biggest crime. There's a lot that I wish that they could add for Kirby music, like Dream Course music or go more in-depth with Super Star music like the Revenge of Meta Knight Ending Theme, or go all in on Robobot music back in Smash For, but Ultimate is looking like a very much needed big push.

And as much as Amazing Mirror or Nightmare in Dreamland are great games, the music... I just don't find all that memorable.
Well tbf Kirby had nothing but Gourmet Race and Green Greens before Brawl so I guess I can see your point
Robobot wasn't out yet in 4 so that was entirely out of the question. It came out in 2016 iirc
I fear your thougts on Crash.
Oh no, Crash is cool, I actually played Crash 3 when I was little at a friend, could only ever beat the tiger level on the Great wall of China but I still enjoyed it. Plus Crash actually has charisma imo and has left people fondly remembering more than 2 games

Only two of the seven DLC character were "godly" good. Other three were high tier and two of them were mediocre at best.

If people hate Banjo... Then i fear the way they look at Crash.
Don't like him either.

If people don't have a background with a certain character they usually don't want them or would be indifferent to their inclusion in the game, but if they're heavily requested it can become annoying to them. For me personally, I played a lot of Banjo and Kazooie as a kid (anyone remember they had a gba game? That's the one I played a lot lol) so he's personally my top pick for this game. But I also don't want Geno in this game, since I never played SMRPG (actually tried on the wii but stopped before I got to Geno idk paper mario is better), which would be fine on it's own but with almost everyone saying he deserves it or that he's important really baffles me and makes me hate the character in a really petty way.

Makes sense. Competitive players wouldn't want to buy someone low tier
Nah, competitive players would buy all the characters regardless. Even a bad character with weird unexpected stuff could beat a good character if the player doesn't expect it.

Ah ****, then yeah, I wished they would've gone into Triple Deluxe music more, then.

That was kinda the problem with Kirby music in Smash, it'd be really just those two songs. Like, I'm glad that we have a remix of The Great Cave Offensive Theme, but **** me, it almost feels a bit dated to give it some representation.

Yeah, I find it annoying when people say a character deserves to get in, as if they're somehow better than the other characters people want

For me it’s like, even if I have no experience with a character, if other people want them then cool! I’ll root for them for their sake. I don’t know much about Lloyd, for example, but a lot of people seem to want to him and he seems cool so why not?

You're still right as we should have gotten the boss theme and Royal Road. Maybe that circus theme everyone loves too. BUT NOPE YOU GET FLORAL FIELD! BUY A STAGE TO GET THE WORLD TO WIN!

Honestly, the sudden Banjo hate kind of catches me off guard too lol.

But I get it, differing opinions and stuff.

I’d argue that Banjo and Kazooie (and the world around them) has plenty of charisma, albeit in a different way. It’s just more of British wit rather than the Looney Tunes-esc humor of Crash.

Though which one you find better is entirely subjective.

I want characters that look cool. If I don't know the character, I can just look them up and maybe buy the game they're from. As for Lloyd, I'd be fine with him, even though I've never played Tales of Symphonia. I'd prefer Yuri though, since I have played Tales of Vesperia

Despite the fact that he's literally the 4th most prominent character in the modern Kirby series, people treat him like a generic enemy.

And considering we have :ultpiranha:, those people have better come up w/ an argument that makes sense b/c the one that didn't was still proven false.
Honestly, up until PP was confirmed, I was one of those people. I still maintain that he isn't a very interesting choice - just because a goomba with a hat shows up in a few games doesn't make him interesting - but after PP, I think he's fairly likely as DLC. Sakurai creation, uses a lance so there's potential.

Doesn't mean I want him, though. Still very boring. But less annoying that a lot of the other "literally who" characters people talk about (looking at you, Katalina)

I'm British (born and raised in England before moving) and I really don't get the 'wit'. Only dialogue I remember seeing was Gruntilda always rhyming and Kazooie saying she wants to jam a key up her ****

Did we get Masked Dedede in Smash yet. I dont remenber it from the 3DS selection.
If not, that is a sin with no deserving forgiveness

Judging by most of this thread, people don't like Banjo because he lacks sex appeal :estatic:

And before people @ me, I'm aware there are degenerate corners of the internet where such a statement is likely not true.

But Katalina isn't a literal who in Japan, just outside of Japan

We don't have VS. Masked Dedede in Ultimate, either.

You have 1101 songs in this ****ing game, and can't add the most easiest ****ing one to put in.

But didn't Vergeben say in his private message that he heard that Sora was not it?
A lot of that list seemed more like speculation rather than fact since it wasn't very concrete to one character you also have to remember Square is known for giving out misinformation to bait leakers so really it's safe to say no one actually knows who is and who isn't confirmed or deconfirmed. Then there's the fact that the only real way for people to even know who the Square rep is at this point is if they are a higher up in the company and considering how hush hush Square is. Again it's safe to say anything any random anon or not says on anything regarding just DLC in general let alone the Square rep is just a pure guessing game rather than actually knowing anything. The fact they have to even talk about it as "list" at all means that they themselves don't really know anything.

Who needs crash when you got Spyro
Spyro and Crash are so related... To the point that Reignited wouldn’t be a thing if it wasn’t for the success of N-Sane Trilogy.

I love Spyro as much as Crash, but i find the Crash vs Spyro debate dumb.

You know what would make a hilarious character and nod to Minecraft the spider jocky lmao just a derpy skelebro sitting on a spider coming to destroy people's lives. It's ultimate has it turn into a charged creeper that makes a huge explosion too. Let's be honest here guys minecraft Steve isn't really the character people care about in Minecraft it's the enemies since they have all the actual personality. Minecraft Steve is just a blocky Mii character he serves the exact same purpose they are you the player a blank slate. When people think Minecraft 9 times out of ten an enemy is the first the thing people think about mainly the big three main mobs the creeper, skelly, and zombie.

I don't like Banjo because he lacks any kind of appeal, period.

He's ok when paired with Kazooie, but still hardly interesting, imo.

Banjo and Kazooie are my friends because I think there's an earnestness and gentleness to them. A lot of 90s platforming mascots prided themselves on 'tude and crudeness but Rare were just like "here's a dopey bear and a snarky bird and they're friends and she lives inside his backpack despite how absurdly inconvenient that is". There's a timeless, fairy tale quality there that I think makes them more appealing to my adult self than characters like Crash or Dreamcast-era Sonic, who I also grew up on and still have some fondness for but I think are painfully dated in a lot of ways. Like yeah, Banjo's surfer necklace and shorts are still a little bit... archaic, to put it kindly, but otherwise the duo have aged far more gracefully as characters than the vast majority of their contemporaries, in my opinion.

I also like that their moveset is all just themed around what they are. They're a bear and a bird and they're codependent on one another. Simple, and I can totally understand why some may see that as simple to a fault, but I think that gives them a sense of aesthetic cohesion that's appealing in the same way a lot of Nintendo's headliners are. It's why I think they'd fit in Smash like a glove.

Again, no knock against people who dislike 'em or anything. I get why they might not appeal to those who didn't grow up on them. I just got to thinking as to why I still liked them as much as I do, despite a lot of my childhood favourites falling out of favour with adult me's sensibilities. It's probably partially Muh N64 Nostalgia™, but I'd like to think to myself that it's not entirely that.
