Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Pokémon is a big franchise with many posible characters, why is it bad that it gets the representtion it deserves?
It's not.

But when people try to justify someone shouldn't get in because they're too "new", we have to bring up :ultgreninja: and :ultincineroar:, to show them that it can happen, whether they like it or not.

Don't forget the most important one
To spite whiny people
I want to be "above" wanting things to spite people but I'm not gonna lie, I'd get a lot of hours of entertainment from just observing all of the salt.

It's almost as if Retro Rep was a made up rule from the community that happened to last longer than it probably should have.

Does that mean Mario is a retro character?
His origins are retro if that's what your meaning by the term. Jumpman in Donkey Kong was '81 and the original Mario Bros Arcade was '83. Though his constant present through the ages makes Mario a bit more ageless then other retro characters lol

Umm, I mean who's left? Unless you're Goomba, Koopa excited.
Saki is a costume, didn't check if Dillon or Drill Dozer were spirits.. so who else?
Depends on whether or not spirits are deconfirmations.
If they are, then yes we don't have too many 1st party characters.
If they aren't, then we have a completely different scenario.

We don't know for sure until we see the few characters revealed.

Literally 5 seconds after I say I should stop making situational Smash-Danganronpa themed MS Paint edits and I MAKE ANOTHER ONE.

I think this is an addiction.

I mean, real talk, I'd be super happy if Boo got in as a playable fighter. I think Boo has a lot of potential to be a fun character.

Honestly part of the reason I loved Incineroar was seeing overconfident little ****s who acted like Grinch was undeniable proof because "IT'S FANSERVICE! SAKURAI IS A TROLL! OCCAM'S RAZOR!" become a LOT meeker

To be completely fair in at least one of those scenarios (and one can infer the same occurred in the other) Sakurai has openly stated he maintained a slot open knowing they would use a new Pokemon. I don't know if they'd do that for any other series, holding a slot open knowing ahead of time they'd use a new character from an upcoming game

yoshi is a separate, sentient species with a unique language and culture

poochy is A Dog
Poochy is to the Shiba with a fedora in Mario Odyssey. Yoshi is to a god-damn, filthy, blue-blooded Argonian (a race of sentient swamp lizardfolk).

HUGE difference!

Er, don't twist my words. Pokemon "deserves" every character it gets.

I'm saying character picks like Lucario and Greninja and Incineroar being picks based off of "I think this will be popular so we're pushing it" or "We need an obligatory SM rep so I'm leaving a spot open for later" isn't the way I'd personally go considering characters. Maybe get a group of characters people like and then decide based off of the pros/cons of them instead?

Which isn't to say the ones in Smash wouldn't get traction on their own, I just wish that traction would go into consideration more.

Except Castlevania is still going strong as a franchise?

And except he also draws from Richter who definitely isn't retro. At least not retro if Cloud isn't retro.

She is.

Not arguing. I really don't know, that's why I'm asking. Is Zelda the same entity through time?
How I understand it is the power of Link and Zelda kind of descend down through the ages but just the power not the person themselves. Each Link and Zelda is technically a different person but share a similar capabilities.

I always looked at it like an Avatar TLA situation

I doubt that Edelgard is getting in; Rex and Pyra didn't get in because their designs were not finalized by the time planning was finished. I doubt Edelgard's design was done before Rex and Pyra's.

Besides if DLC was decided later than what a lot of people expect, why not Hector, Lyn, or Celica? These characters have proven to be very popular through Heroes. FE isn't the kind of series that needs a lot of promo in Smash anymore; Heroes will promote Three Houses enough.

I can see Edelgard getting in as a spirit and a Mii costume but not much else.

A fitting example really. Though they'd be more like Korra post Season 2 then Aang just because Link and Zelda seem not to be connected to their past selves in any particular way that I can tell.

Oh no, not this again!

The last argument I had with a person about the Zelda timeline, lasted two sleepless months... :(
Armatures, get ready for a year of this, I can't afford a Switch I got nothin else to do

hey HEY, at least one of them got trained had a brief sparing session with the undead spirit of one of their past incarnations or something like that

In fact I don't even remember in which game that happened

Oh no no, I was agreeing with your post. I was just presenting another example to put the Furry Confusion argument to rest.

But it's dead, hasn't had an actual video game since *checks notes* 2014
Well... that's not really dead. And plus, requiem tho.

And listen man, if you're popular enough to get a netflix adaptation, I don't think your franchise is dead.

simon hasn't been the protagonist of a main series castlevania game since castlevania 4, his only other major appearance was in a fighting game nobody wants to bring up

he uses his classic barbarian design featured on the original box art rather than the modern red hair design everyone dislikes, his walk animation is deliberately intended to mimic the very awkward nes sprites, and his weapons behave exactly like they did in the original games. the monsters in the dracula's castle stages are also very obscure bosses from the first few games rather than anything from richter's game or even some of the franchise's more memorable, unique monsters (though dracula is still based on some of his more famous incarnations rather than the sprites)

its very deliberately a retro throwback to the original 4 castlevania games, with richter there as a bonus for those who liked the stuff from symphony of the night onwards. he's a retro character, but not in the same way as rob or game and watch
