Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

They DID get caught on record saying they were gonna "burn (Metal Gear)'s legacy to the ground" or something like that, soooo....
Can you give me the ink to that?

I'd probably sooner cut Greninja and Lucario before Jigglypuff in Smash. She's like one of the Pokemon with a more unique design like Pikachu and Charizard we have left in Smash that Isn't just the typical humanoid shaped as those tend to stick around and get requested more often. Which considering the diverse monster design's Pokemon has...

I wouldn't mind seeing Ivysaur back or at least another quadruped Pokemon in Smash..

I'd honestly keep Jigglypuff over 2/3 of the roster, so no, I hope she doesn't get cut.

Of course, I'm one of those suckers that believes the original 12 should never be broken up (which has almost happened a couple of times), so take that for what you will.

Here's something I am curious about. Which characters do you expect (or hope) to be visually upgraded?

In Smash 4, several characters got revamped designs:
Bowser
Yoshi
Ike
Samus & Zero Suit Samus
Roy
Olimar (subtle changes, but he was indeed upgraded)

In Smash for Switch, Link has obviously been revamped to look like he does in Breath of the Wild. I really hope that Zelda follows suit, as it's one of my favourite Zelda designs of all time.
I feel like Fox and Falco (and potentially Wolf) will probably be updated to their Star Fox Zero designs.
I hope Samus gets changed to her slick new model from Samus Returns:

Maybe Villager will be given a height boost to reflect the taller stature of the player characters since New Leaf. The default boy and girl costumes could be the ones from New Leaf, who are pretty iconic now due to being in Mario Kart 8 as well.

I know some people might disagree with this, but I'd personally like to see Sonic altered to be more like his classic look, especially if they make the animations most similar to Sonic Mania. I just think the design is overall nicer, more iconic, and would fit better alongside Mario, Mega Man, and Pac-Man.

Side note, I want to see a more fun and expressive Mario model like in Odyssey. Let Mario smile for once!

~~~
Also: friendly reminder to keep your stage suggestions coming for the Smash Switch Stage Survey!
All the characters you suggested I would like to see updated. A wishful thought of mine is for Sheik and Ganondorf to get a BotW makeover as well, like Sheik in Brawl. The D.K. crew could also get updated with their furrier Tropical Freeze Switch textures and Donkey Kong's nose job.
Rosalina got in off of nothing, Pauline started all of this and is a main character in a franchise of games and is in the most recent game.
I'm behind her 100% (and she's gorgeous with all that dark hair but that's not the point)
i'm sorry did you miss galaxy 1,2 3d world, and 2 mario karts? rosa didn't appear out of thin air she was pushed. hard. and she has a fanbase today. pauline has been in one game its not the same situation at all.
You may have meant this as a joke.
But support.
Psychic Water would be unique in the game.
Imagine a mechanic based on its Pokedex entry.
"Incredibly slow and dopey. It takes 5 seconds for it to feel pain when under attack."
Slowpoke doesn't take knockback until 5 seconds after being hit.
Probably an unpopular request, but despite enjoying the way Bowser has been stylized in smash (particularly smash 4), I almost wouldn't mind them carrying over his regular appearance from the games. I mean come on, who doesn't want to fight as Tux Bowser from Odyssey!?
Nintendo also seems more keen on showing off Bowser's humorous side rather than his fearsome side in a number of games, and I feel like I'd enjoy it if smash were to reflect that.
That would break every combo.
I like it
It would also react slowly. Basically Slowpoke would be "input lag, the character".
I personally don't think this point is relevant for Bomberman's inclusion. It's much more than third-party IPs having a future. Third-parties ranking high in the ballot that will be a major factor Bomberman's inclusion, relevance has nothing to do with Sakurai possibly including the character. Even then, the multimedia matter would not matter since this IP expansion started taking place in 2018, a time where roster deciding had already been way past.
  • He's a Japanese character which makes it easier for Sakurai to justify his inclusion over a Western character like Rayman
That makes his inclusion easier to negotiate, but justification has nothing to do with Bomberman potentially being added in the game.
Sakurai does not let his view of a company affect whenever or not a character can get in else we wouldn't have gotten Mega Man when video game fans were calling for Capcom to sell their IPs
There is a huge difference between Capcom's situation and Konami's situation, especially when taking personal relationship to account. I do not think the Capcom example is the right comparison, unless you have a case where Sakurai has stated he had personal problems with Capcom way back in 2011 or 2012 where the Smash 4 base roster was likely decided.
  • Nintendo and Konami collaborated on the latest game, indicating working relationship between the two.
I honestly think he is the most likely third-party character be it base game or DLC. All Sakurai has to do is to ask Konami and he's in.
I do not think this way personally. Konami is a less of a sure-fire to me, even with the recent collaboration with Nintendo. Konami does not feel as certain as company like Level-5, whose relationship with Nintendo has grown very close to possibly include a character like Layton or Jibanyan. If anything, Sakurai will have to get past the Kojima problem before starting to re-negotiate with Konami for characters in Smash, which I do not see him overcoming, mostly for his friend's sake.
You just reminded me of something. The only DLC characters we got that weren't "proportionate" human designs were :4mewtwo::4lucas:. In contrast...
Pauline is the original first lady of Nintendo.
Put some respect on her name. She may have been known as ''Lady" back then, but she didn't just come out of nowhere for you to say she was in one game.
Half of the hype for her being in Odyssey was ''Oh my god! They finally remembered her." in terms of a main line game.
What do you mean Fox & Falco will PROBABLY use their Star Fox Zero designs?
In terms of the Pokémon roster, yes. In terms of the Smash roster, it’s obviously she’s based off of Kirby.
But realistically as time passes, Jigglypuff’s chances of staying in the roster keep decreasing after every smash title. Yeah, on the surface it looks like Jigglypuff is gonna stay, but with the Pokémon cast filled with big fan favorites and new Pokémon on the horizon, and the fact that Jigglypuff always barely makes it in. She might get the boot in favor of a new Pokémon.
That might be have been true in Brawl, but there's no evidence this was the case in Smash 4. If anything, given the development actually updated Jigglypuff's appearance in the latter game unlike in Brawl as well as the fact she was promoted to a default character in the Wii U version, it seems she was far less of an afterthought than in Brawl.
*thinking hard*
You know what you may be right...
Sakurai said he almost cut jigglypuff in smash 4
And today she's not as relevant as she was before the newer Pokémon seem to be over throwning the older ones
(Except for mewtwo pikachu and charizard)
She could get replaced by the gen 7 Pokémon (most likely Decidueye) and Geninja stays since he's still super popular and relevant and with charizard that would a starter of each type
That might be have been true in Brawl, but there's no evidence this was the case in Smash 4. If anything, given the development actually updated Jigglypuff's appearance in the latter game unlike in Brawl as well as the fact she was promoted to a default character in the Wii U version, it seems she was far less of an afterthought than in Brawl.
That isn't a good argument.
The "update" was literally just taking her model from X/Y and giving minimal graphical tweaks.
And being "promoted to default" means nothing.
You know who else was promoted? Bowser Jr.
You know, the one who almost got scrapped?
All the characters you suggested I would like to see updated. A wishful thought of mine is for Sheik and Ganondorf to get a BotW makeover as well, like Sheik in Brawl. The D.K. crew could also get updated with their furrier Tropical Freeze Switch textures and Donkey Kong's nose job.
Maybe Sheik will get a redesign based around the Sheikah Armour from Breath of the Wild?
As for DK, out of curiosity, what nose job are you referring to? I don't remember DK's design being changed too much for Tropical Freeze besides a general increase in furriness.
Probably an unpopular request, but despite enjoying the way Bowser has been stylized in smash (particularly smash 4), I almost wouldn't mind them carrying over his regular appearance from the games. I mean come on, who doesn't want to fight as Tux Bowser from Odyssey!?
Nintendo also seems more keen on showing off Bowser's humorous side rather than his fearsome side in a number of games, and I feel like I'd enjoy it if smash were to reflect that.
I would definitely like to see Bowser in Smash better reflect his canonical self, in terms of appearance and personality. I too enjoy the more cartoony Bowser in contrast to Smash's Godzilla-style beast.
In terms of the Pokémon roster, yes. In terms of the Smash roster, it’s obviously she’s based off of Kirby.
But realistically as time passes, Jigglypuff’s chances of staying in the roster keep decreasing after every smash title. Yeah, on the surface it looks like Jigglypuff is gonna stay, but with the Pokémon cast filled with big fan favorites and new Pokémon on the horizon, and the fact that Jigglypuff always barely makes it in. She might get the boot in favor of a new Pokémon.
I think it's the other way around honestly, the original 12 legacy can only get stronger each passing game there's no cuts from it. It's true she was almost cut for Brawl, but you have to remember that Brawl was the third game in the series, at that time there was only 2 games before Brawl, now if you cut Jigglypuff you're cutting a character that's been in 4 Smash games (Sakurai counts Smash 3DS/Wii-U as separate games for some reason) and that legacy is much stronger than the one she had during Brawl's development.
Also, I think there's more reason behind Jigglypuff's inclusion than just her original 12 status but I'm way too busy to write about that right now, that's going to take forever to explain lol.
As for DK, out of curiosity, what nose job are you referring to? I don't remember DK's design being changed too much for Tropical Freeze besides a general increase in furriness.
That would be this one. It was not in the original Tropical Freeze but a part of the updated Switch version.
Here's something I am curious about. Which characters do you expect (or hope) to be visually upgraded?
In Smash 4, several characters got revamped designs:
Bowser
Yoshi
Ike
Samus & Zero Suit Samus
Roy
Olimar (subtle changes, but he was indeed upgraded)
In Smash for Switch, Link has obviously been revamped to look like he does in Breath of the Wild. I really hope that Zelda follows suit, as it's one of my favourite Zelda designs of all time.
I feel like Fox and Falco (and potentially Wolf) will probably be updated to their Star Fox Zero designs.
I hope Samus gets changed to her slick new model from Samus Returns:
Maybe Villager will be given a height boost to reflect the taller stature of the player characters since New Leaf. The default boy and girl costumes could be the ones from New Leaf, who are pretty iconic now due to being in Mario Kart 8 as well.
I know some people might disagree with this, but I'd personally like to see Sonic altered to be more like his classic look, especially if they make the animations most similar to Sonic Mania. I just think the design is overall nicer, more iconic, and would fit better alongside Mario, Mega Man, and Pac-Man.
Side note, I want to see a more fun and expressive Mario model like in Odyssey. Let Mario smile for once!
~~~

Also: friendly reminder to keep your stage suggestions coming for the Smash Switch Stage Survey!
The villager desperately needs a redesign. The city folk design was fine for the last game, but the New Leaf design is miles better, and looks gorgeous in Mario kart. In addition, the female design in Smash was just downright creepy, as were nearly all of the alternate villager designs in that game.

Maybe Sheik will get a redesign based around the Sheikah Armour from Breath of the Wild?

I would definitely like to see Bowser in Smash better reflect his canonical self, in terms of appearance and personality. I too enjoy the more cartoony Bowser in contrast to Smash's Godzilla-style beast.
DK got a rambiplasty for Tropical Freeze.

Imagine a mechanic based on its Pokedex entry.

"Incredibly slow and dopey. It takes 5 seconds for it to feel pain when under attack."

Slowpoke doesn't take knockback until 5 seconds after being hit.
I can see the matches now...

Slowpoke vs. Ganondorf, both at high damage percentages, Ganondorf manages to land a Warlock Punch, Slowpoke takes the hit but lands a smash attack before he's launched, both go flying, Ganondorf gets KO'd first, Slowpoke wins, cue For Glory-style salt from the Ganondorf player.

Ah, Slowpoke sounds fun.

That isn't a good argument.

The "update" was literally just taking her model from X/Y and giving minimal graphical tweaks.
And being "promoted to default" means nothing.
You know who else was promoted? Bowser Jr.

You know, the one who almost got scrapped?
Not for the Wii U version though.
*thinking hard*

You know what you may be right...

Sakurai said he almost cut jigglypuff in smash 4

And today she's not as relevant as she was before the newer Pokémon seem to be over throwning the older ones
(Except for mewtwo pikachu and charizard)

She could get replaced by the gen 7 Pokémon (most likely Decidueye) and Geninja stays since he's still super popular and relevant and with charizard that would a starter of each type

Sakurai never stated he almost cut Jigglypuff in Smash 4.

Also, she's no less relevant now than she was during pre-Smash 4. If anything, the fact she returned to the anime makes her about as relevant as she was around the time of Smash 64.

I'd actually argue her design isn't what's unique about her, considering she's the same size and shape as kirby. Now her floaty playstyle is what makes her different, but every Pokemon in the game has an extremely unique moveset.

I want to clarify, I never said I wanted Jigglypuff cut, I'd be disappointed if she was. I'm just saying that Mewtwo, Charizard, Lucario, and Greninja are MASSIVELY more popular among competitive Pokemon players, gamers, and even casuals at this point. Unlike a a decade ago, most people associate Jigglypuff with Smash Bros. as opposed to Pokemon, and the same cannot be same about the other four characters I mentioned.

That would be this one. It was not in the original Tropical Freeze but a part of the updated Switch version.

Wow, I never realized they tweaked his model. Honestly, I'm not sure if I like it - it looks fine from the side, but the front-on view looks sort of strange to me.

The villager desperately needs a redesign. The city folk design was fine for the last game, but the New Leaf design is miles better, and looks gorgeous in Mario kart. In addition, the female design in Smash was just downright creepy, as were nearly all of the alternate villager designs in that game.
I agree. I especially like the design/outfit of the default New Leaf girl used in MK8.

On the subject of character redesigns, I sincerely hope that all but one of the Smash 4 cast with new games since 4 get their latest designs, especially Samus. I'm no Metroid fan but the Samus Returns design is just glorious. I really hope Ganondorf gets something at least, HW, concept art design or even some composite of BotW armours with Calamity Ganon influences, just not that stiff and bland TP design: I'm sick to death of it. Only character I don't want updated fully is DK, the nose change is hideous and I hope it's patched out of Tropical Freeze Switch at the first opportunity.

Regarding the topic of Jigglypuff, I think she should honestly be one of the lowest priority fighters in the cast at this point, aside from Mii Fighters, Dr Mario and Dark Pit. Nothing Game Freak or TPCi does promotes her in any way, her moveset is bland aside from the humour of Rest, and in a series of 807 candidate characters with varying viability, a character held in the roster by tradition and not by any actual merit can only stick around for so long. Pokemon shouldn't be needlessly held to 6 characters, but if we do 7, they might as well do an Alola Pokemon, a decently popular pick from any generation that TPCi holds among its promoted darlings, and then save a Gen 8 Pokemon for DLC later on to make 8 fighters. Might seem like a lot but it's not undeserved by any means for a series like Pokemon.

EDIT: I should clarify I'm not gunning for Jigglypuff to be outright replaced by anything in particular, I just think that she should be (and likely is) very low priority to make it back compared to the rest of Smash 4's cast, and Sakurai should consider any other Pokemon veterans or newcomers more important.

Oh and to address an argument made earlier, Jigglypuff is not going to be replaced with a Gen 7 Pokemon. Of all the characters that have been cut, only one was replaced and that was Young Link. Jigglypuff is either in or she's out due to low priority, like Mewtwo in Brawl.

How valid is Alex Percell as a source? I have never heard of this guy before, but his list of games seem very plausible and it lines up with the recent things that have happened to Nintendo recently this year.

You heard it here first folks: Slowpoke for Smash! :079:
You should've waited a page or so to post this. Would help the joke. :awesome:

Would be a funny character option. Especially if it meant super armor at some points or something like that. Could become an unorthodox character who might at best have balance issues. Like he wouldn't be knocked back from an attack for a bit, then sent flying. Or he would take a moment to get damaged, then suddenly gain it all at once. Another gimmick, sure, but it'd fit his character well.

Who is Alex Percell?

Also, Pokemon Cube and Sphere sounds really dumb.
