Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

What are you hoping to be revamped, out of interest? I can see how it could last 3-5 minutes if it's something like 2 minutes of "all online modes return with a fresh new look and some new features *cue clips with explanatory text*" + 3 minutes of "and for the first time ever [2 or 3 things] [....] we really hope you enjoy it!"
The "For Glory" and "For Fun" setup didn't really work as intended, and the skill rating system and how it paired you with other people was broken. I'd like for them to go into detail on how "For Fun" will be expanded to offer more variety in its game types and item/stage selection, and how stage selection in "For Glory" will work now that they don't all have to be FD. I'd like to see a new online ranking/matchmaking system will work, assuming they aren't just plugging in what Smash 4 had.

I'd like to see lobbies introduced, like every other fighting game since SFIV, so that you can play with multiple friends simultaneously and trade off matches while everyone's easily accessible. And on that note, I want to see how your Switch friends list can be used to invite and join games in a much easier way than Smash games past. And though this is a long shot, I really want an online training mode so that players can practice together without setting up an actual match. This has been a wonderful feature in other fighting games. Further, we need to know about voice chat, whether it's through the console itself like Fortnite or through the dinky phone app like Splatoon, and how that works with player lobbies, For Glory and For Fun. All of this is assuming there also isn't some cooky new online mode Sakurai thought up and wants to share.

And while he probably won't go into it, I'd REALLY like to see how they plan on avoiding the type of latency we saw in Smash 4. I doubt it'll be anything but a PvP setup, but one can dream.

This Direct is longer than any Smash Ultimate presentation so far, but it's not unheard of when considering the previous game.

--Wii U / 3DS--
- April 2014 Direct: 39m
- 50 Fact Extravaganza: 35m
- Roy + Ryu Presentation: 18m
- Corrin + Bayonetta Presentation: 33m

--Ultimate--
- E3 2018 segment: 25m
- August Direct: 27m
- Upcoming Direct: 40m

So while this is a step up from the August Direct in terms of length, it's a good idea to keep expectations in check.

Pokémon, Yoshi, and Diablo? What weird games to choose from.

Diablo has that special thing of having Ganondorf and other characters playable via amiibo, I think?

Pokémon is obvious, being the big three in terms of character numbers. Can literally be anything.

But Yoshi? Hrm... Maybe it gets a new Amiibo that's compatible with Smash Bros.?

Of course, this is all just speculation based on circumstance at this point

Here's my one and only confident prediction:

No DLC talk. At all.

People seem to think they're going to be talking all about DLC and what's ahead, but that's nonsense. That happened with Mewtwo because he was in-progress after the game was finished but before it was released, and they just wanted to say "Chill out, he's coming."

Otherwise, Nintendo doesn't really go "Hey here's all the stuff you get to pay for after the game comes out" before they release the game. It's a common practice with other companies these days (hell, last month's Spider-Man advertised its three-part episodic DLC before the game came out, and one of them came out just a week ago) but Nintendo isn't like that. They choose to focus on the base game first, and then worry about what comes afterwards.

For reference, Breath of the Wild didn't get its DLC announced (and released) until three months later at E3. Splatoon 2 didn't get its DLC announced until 8 months later in the March Direct earlier this year. Those things were soon enough after the game's launch that Nintendo could have brought them up before the games' releases, but they chose not to, because they wanted to focus on the quality and content of the final game.

This is also because, generally speaking, Nintendo holds onto announcements until relatively shortly before their release date. The exceptions to this were some of the games at E3 last year, especially Pokémon and Metroid Prime 4, but those were to assuage people's concerns about their existence, while making it clear that those games weren't coming out anytime soon. But they could have also announced Smash then, but they held onto it until this year, when it was actually coming out.

Not to mention that every time anyone at Nintendo was ever interviewed and asked about DLC, the answer was exactly that: Sakurai and team are focusing on the main game first, then worrying about what comes next. At San Diego Comic Con, for instance, IGN interviewed Bill Trinen and asked about DLC, and he said:

"Obviously that was a big part of the Wii U game, but part of Mr. Sakurai's approach is really 'let's focus on getting the game done.' And then once he has the game done, he'll start to make decisions about what he wants to do with other characters or DLC and things like that."

And there's a lot of game to worry about getting done. Even after ~50 minutes' worth of Directs and so much other information elsewhere, there's still so much about the game we don't know, and now we're getting a 40 minute Direct to cap it all off. With a game of this size and scope, the team doesn't have room to be thinking about all the stuff they'll do when it's done. It's already the biggest crossover game in history,

Which is why the insiders that are claiming "X character is DLC" raises warning signs about their statements' validity. With all these insiders and all these "leaks," we still don't know who is actually in the game right now or not. Yet these people claim to know who is going to be in the game in the future, before anything's even been worked on, which is highly unlikely.

Disclaimer: I could be wrong about this. Sakurai could introduce some unprecedented roadmap for all the content they wish to add to the game post-launch or something. Ultimate is already unprecedented in many ways, so there's always no telling what Sakurai is going to say or do. I'll be genuinely surprised if that happens, but I definitely don't expect it to.

So for now let's just be excited for all the crazy stuff we're going to see on Thursday that's going to be in the game when it's in our hands on December 7, because Sakurai's taken great measures to ensure that this game is packed when it releases, rather than hold things off for DLC in the future.

Unpopular opinion.

I hope that there's no DLC day one...

I just want to enjoy the base game without thinking of pay for more content for a while. In six month if you like, then I will welcome DLC.
What about free day one dlc character for online members? That's what I was predicting for a while (idk anymore) and I don't see why you'd object to a new character being added day one

(Of course this assumes you have the online membership...)

I don't think anyone wants day one DLC, I'd imagine everyone prefers everything that's ready for release to be available by just buying the game, I just think people are hoping for an announcement. Like, they'd announce DLC is in the works, but the character they announce as the first in line comes out in or around February.

40 minutes is very long but I don't think it's long enough to cover 5 uniques
i mean, the august 8th direct revealed 5 characters, even if two of them were echoes. a lot of people just seem to be overestimating how long it takes to reveal a fighter

Jeez ResetEra are a bunch of hypocrites.. I'm in the discord and they are literally discussing how they are gonna celebrate the banner leak being wrong.
Talking about making pictures and gifs of Incineroar dancing on deconfirmed characters. Also they are talking about the leak as if Nintendo came out and denied it themselves when they are just latching onto the words of a bunch of insiders with spotty records. And they are calling this place Trashboards and making fun of PapaGenos. Like what did we even do lol
what do you expect from neogaf 2.0

I wouldn't look too much into it. Wendy's has made a tweet about the smash leak, i think even the same day it began circulating.
Wendy's and Best Buy have very different social media presences however. Wendy's is known for ****posting, Best Buy is not. Additionally, aside from their partnership with Nintendo for the Ultimate tour thing Wendy's has no real stake or relationship with Nintendo. Best Buy are a direct outlet for Nintendo products and in many cases do find themselves with confidential information of some degree. They have much more stake to stay entirely out of leaks, hence why their tweet was deleted immediately while Wendy's tweets are still around.

Can we all make a deal?

If the Grinch Leak is true:
TeamReal: Be happy, celebrate, and maybe do some (well intentioned) teasing of people on TeamFake.
TeamFake: Don't get bitter that you were wrong, just smile and say "Okay, they got us" and admit defeat. No reason to complain!

If the Grinch Leak is fake:
TeamReal: Don't flame the forums or talk crap about insiders, Sakurai, Nintendo, etc for not getting characters you wanted. Just admit that the leaker did an amazing fake and fooled a lot of people.
TeamFake: Don't even talk about it. A lot of people will be upset, and taunting them will only cause this thread to get shut down. Have compassion for all of the disappointed fans.

I think if we all agree to be bound to the Whoville Contract (it's what I'm calling this), I think we will all be fine!

-I sign the Contract: SlickWylde
While I agree with the sentiment and will personally follow this, you know this isn't how it's going to go. Maybe we'll be able to sort of stick to it here, but people on the wider internet won't, and that'll incite the same reactions in this thread. Either way the mods have their work more than cut out for them.

Also, at this point I lack compassion because people have set themselves up for disappointment by believing this "leak," similar to when people denied Box theory. Getting your hopes up too high is a dangerous thing, and if you end up getting burned because of that's on you. Learn from it and move on.

Yes I do: Haruka Amami (the girl in my profile) from THE iDOLM@STER for the Bandai Namco rep (which will probably never happen), Shantae, Mach Rider, Homura from Senran Kagura (which will also probably never happen), and Raspberyl from Disgaea 3 (which will again probably never happen)… and maybe Noire from Hyperdimension Neptunia (again... never happening. lol)
Aw. No mention for Jill Valentine?

40 minutes?!

Okay, I can only see it being that long with a couple uniques and echoes IF Sakurai goes totally in depth on Spirits, which I doubt it.

I'm DEFINITELY leaning towards Grinch leak being legitimate now. A week before the big reveals and it comes out? That's the perfect time for the adverts and promos being worked on to be sent out after the info drop, and since the previous character reveals were ~2 minutes, and we have an idea that one of the trailers features two characters Simon-style at ~3 minutes then that's about 9-11 minutes for unique fighter reveals in the direct, depending on if the second reveal happens and if it's a unique or echo.

Regardless, I'm 100% sure we're getting a good lot of character drops. There's no way we won't with 40 minutes. The last one was ~27 minutes iirc with 2 uniques and 3 echoes, but a majority of the Direct was filled with modes, assists, Pokemon, music, and other stuff.

The only things I can see being covered is possibly some new mechanics, assists, Pokemon, trophies, maybe a couple modes, and Spirits.

Regardless...

Get your hype hats on bois.

Okay inceniroar confirmed this is too obvious
I wouldn't say so, it's a livestream for Pokémon Let's Go, which Incineroar is only tangentially related to (the fact that he's a Pokémon).

Pokémon Let's Go is coming out really soon, it makes sense to talk about it, regardless of whether or not Inicineroar's in Smash.
---
Anyway, I was rewatching the character trailers and I made a stunning realisation regarding Isabelle.
I remember watching a reaction a while back where the person watching noticed there was a bell sound coming from her as she walked around, asking why there's a ringing bell if she has no collar.

Isabelle has bells on her hairband.

Also if we're talking female characters, the priority's gotta be de-assisting Midna and making her playable ASAP.

Dixie would be cool too.

So do people who believe the Grinch leak think they are going to go over 5 newcomers, 2 echo fighters, 5 potential stages that accompany them, as well as the new mode, various items, and a couple other miscellaneous things in the span of 40 minutes?

I mean, its possible I guess. August's direct did 5 in 27 minutes but already has discussed stages and music. Not sure how I feel about the leak anymore anyway (just pessimism starting to grown on it and is a defense mechanism) but I feel like if it was real, it could happen.

No side is exempt from its assholes.

That said, set an example, and regardless of the outcome of the direct, be well mannered. If it's fake, team fake should show the respect that they'd want if it were real, and vice versa. For what it's worth, the community hasn't started to turn into a dumpster fire yet. Keep it like that.

Even if a character reveal takes 5 minutes, which they usually take way shorter of around 2 or 3, it's entirely possible. Although it's possible, the debate is on if it's likely or not.

Imagine, the end of the direct. Sakurai announced all the fighters present in Super Smash Bros. But there's still 5 minutes left.

"For this iteration of Super Smash Bros, we want to make sure that everyone is here. And to do that, we need your help."

The direct quickly cycles through 40 characters running towards a smash logo, including Shadow a semi-clone, as Sakurai narrates over top.

"As you know, for Smash Bros for Wii U we ran a character poll open to the fans to vote in to bring a character to smash. Bayonetta won, but it was such a success we want to try it again. This time though, we will be showing off realizable fighters that were popular in the original poll to make sure we can actually bring them to the game."

As Sakurai finishes talking, the shoes of each character are presented in a graphic, each of their shoes running towards the graphic.

"Thank our for tuning into the direct and please vote in our 39 and a half foot poll!"

I have my beta DLC newcomer predictions ready to go for a while now, in the scenario DLC gets announced with more newcomers on the way in the direct. Not finalized yet, but I am calling these characters early.

You know whenever people talk about Microsoft/Rare characters, you generally see the same few names pop up. But one character I haven’t seen many people talk about is Fulgore from Killer Instinct. I feel like he would be a great fit. Seriously, back when Nintendo owned Rare, Fulgore was sometimes used for advetirsiements and promos, and killer instinct was a relatively popular game back in the day. Plus Killer Instinct was rebooted back in 2013 and received much acclaim, so fulgore has relevancy and success. I think he would be a great pick. The opportunity to hear some KI music in Smash would be great. Seriously, just listen to this!

Nobody said they should put characters based on gender. It's just some people are sad that "deserving" female characters like Elma or Dixie Kong aren't suitable for the base roster because the newcomer choices somehow favor older characters.
But Isabelle and Dark Samus are both far newer characters than Dixie Kong, and Elma debuted the same year as Inkling. I'm not sure I understand the argument.

But three of those five newcomers were echoes. Richter got one minute dedicated to him, and Dark Samus and Chrom got around 2-3 minutes. Comparatively, Castlevania content got around 6 minutes 30 seconds dedicated to it. If we assume a similar amount of time will be dedicated to Geno and Banjo, That's already around 13 minutes taken up by two characters. At that point they've still got 3 more fighters and 2 more echoes to go.

Like, yeah it's possible, but highly unlikely.

Already did a write up of how it could happen and it's not outlandish. Take a look.

So here's how the Grinch leak could all be revealed within 40 minutes, since some aren't sure it would be possible. The times I gave each section are base on how approximately much time they were given in the previous direct. This does not mean it will for sure happen, just that it is possible and could look like this... (Note: The times are what time in the direct the segment would end)

Isaac Reveal (2:00)
Isaac moveset/stage discussion (4:30)
Chorus Kids Reveal (6:30)
Chorus Kids moveset/stage discussion (9:00)
Items/stages/assist trophies (14:00)
Mach Rider reveal (16:00)
Mach Rider movesets/stage discussion (18:30)
Echo Reveal (Shadow/Ken) (20:30)
Game Modes (25:30)
Geno Reveal (27:30)
Geno moveset/stage discussion (30:00)
Miscellaneous changes (33:00)
Spirit Mode (38:00)
Banjo Reveal (40:00)

How about all the instances where they're right?
You can't just cherry pick stuff that isn't confirmed or turned out incorrect to suit your hilariously false narrative.

so you want us to ignore all the times they were wrong and only pay attention to the things they had a lucky guess on?

So 40 mins. This is the blowout we've been waiting for.

We got 5 characters in 30 minutes before. If the box theory isn't dead now, I don't know what will kill it. Lmao

Hopes/expectations for the direct:

  • Starts off with a bang. Isaac reveal trailer.
  • CUHRAYZEE reveal for a character no one ever saw coming + some echos like Ken / Shadow
  • Spirits is a Subspace inspired mode with bosses and most importantly character interactions. It's also one way to unlock characters.
  • DLC plan announced, free characters for online subs
  • ONE MORE THING makes no sense at first, but eventually leads into an incredibly climactic dual reveal for Banjo and
    Bandanna Waddle Dee
    .

Also this.

Psyching yourself up for 7 characters will more than likely end up disappointing you.

Hey, while on the topic of character trailers, has no one considered the fact that maybe, characters could share trailers?
