Sakurai Says To Expect The Smash Bros. Ultimate Character Announcements To Slow Down

You realize Sakurai's comments are kinda ambiguous and this really doesn't change too much, right?

Besides, I understand what he means by the reveals being disorganized.

I don't think this necessarily holds impact on the number of newcomers and clones left, rather, how long it'll be until we see them.

My guess is that we'll probably not see any more reveals until early-mid November. Some time after the game goes gold.

I think we are getting 3 more characters, 4 at best:

Shadow (Echo): This guy is still MIA in the Assist Trophy department.
Ken (Echo): Basically confirmed with the leak at this point.
Incineroar: Too much buildup for him to not make it. I think there was a leak about him also, though I'm not sure.

The other character is either Skull Kid, who like Shadow is still MIA in the Assist Trophy department, or the Square representative, though Square is looking DLC at this point.

Shadow I think is the likeliest one besides Ken and Incineroar. Like Ken, Shadow was basically created a clone and with Echoes, it would be quite the surprise if Shadow DIDN'T make it in.

Also, can I just say that I'm especially happy we got a Gen III track today? Fighting Steven in Sapphire back in the day gave me such a feeling of pride and joy. All I wish is that it took some notes from the BW2 remix with more squealing guitars

As hype as "Everyone is here" was. there are definitely a lot of characters I would have been fine with having cut if it meant more fan favorites got in. Not even necessarily any of my most wanted characters. Getting Isaac and Geno in would have been great even if they don't do much for me. The fact that we are looking at most likely only 6 or 7 unique newcomers at the end feels eh, despite who they are. Just my opinion though.

Just about every news announcement and piece of promotion got disorganized, yet it speaks volumes about how the staff is still good enough to keep the unrevealed roster a complete secret.

Seriously, how on Earth are the site staff able to always put a new music update on Tuesdays/Wednesdays? You'd think that would suffer too.

Feels to me that instead of having both something in October and November, like we expected, we might just have one presentation left, as he's talking specifically about the pacing of the reveals. I'd guess either in late October or early November we'll get a Smash Direct that gives us a huge blowout of information, it could potentially reveal as many things as the final roster, Spirits, Online, All-Star, Stadium, and the rest of the game's smaller unknown quirks, which would probably be able to stretch to 30 minutes worth of runtime.

It does of course indicate that we don't have many newcomers left too, so I'm feeling that Vergeben's characters are probably it. It could still be slightly more, but I'm perfectly fine either way as I got what I wanted long ago, so I'll keep my expectations on the lower end. If it's the case that we only have those three left then I'll feel even more lucky that the ones I wanted were able to make it, being a newcomer in this game is quite the privilege with the limited amount of spots.

The new Sakurai column is interesting, this might **** up my newcomer predictions TBH. I'm kinda being pushed to lower expectations even more with this and the various theories, but then I think about how his statement might end up not being true and we will get more character announcements than expected, like maybe we could get a bomb exploding with character announcements in the next Smash direct. As someone who is predicting an optimistic newcomer outcome, this is conflicting and sort of a nightmare for me right now haha! I am still choosing to stick with my gut though, I personally rather not be in the pessimistic club as of now.

He just knows the SE rep is in, nothing about the circumstances around it, so it could still be DLC.

With how far in advance he knew of it I feel like it'll be in the base game though, I'm sure they've given DLC some thought, but it's unlikely it's far enough in development for leakers to get a sniff of it yet imo, if it's even entered actual development at all. Leakers tend to mostly know about stuff that's so far in development that it's no longer just the inner circles of the team that's working on it.

So I see here and there that the music theory has seemingly been "debunked" due to the latest revealed Battle! Champion Steve remix because people are so sure we'll get a Pokémon unique newcomer.

But in all honesty I have to say I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get one.
For the base game at least, and that it isn't completely ruled out that we won't get a Pokémon newcomer for DLC, like a G8 rep.

For me, it’s going to be Ken (based on a few reasons I won’t explicitly state here) and Incineroar. If anybody else gets revealed for base roster i’ll be ecstatic.

I just am cautioning with the mentality of, “He words were vague!” Or “that could mean anything!”

If anything, it means we’re not getting 6 character combined. At least I wouldn’t expect that.

To be fair, echoes are more bonus characters. Echoes take even lesser effort then clone characters afterall and if we only get 6-8 Unique newcomers, it would mimic how Sakurai did his roster for Melee (The original roster was only going to be 20-21, but instead of finishing an unique King Dedede, Sakurai decided to pad the roster with 6 clones)

I really don’t see a “Test Smash” happening at all. They’re touring the game around at Best Buys and footy stadiums and what not they won’t want to eat into that publicity by making it easily accessible at home. Also. Datamines. They’ll want to avoid those at all costs, so no demo.

Story mode, unlockables, any other secrets and hidden details that would typically be found through regular play. Wouldn’t be characters, like you said, but it could still lead to content being ruined.

So if it does turn out that Ken and Incineroar are the final two characters, I will personally be satisfied.

However, I have to wonder how DLC will work this time. Are they going to be set up like seasons of DLC, or will they be basically one at a time, similar to Wii U/3DS.

I do think the next Smash Direct could end in a few ways. The first would be a DLC announcement, while the second, which could be more exciting, would be a “Test Smash”, would I think could make the internet explode.

The next Direct will really be something, that much is for sure.

That was a pretty PR non-answer and definitely doesn’t confirm a test demo for download on the Switch. This could just as easily refer to the Best Buy demoes.

My theory is that the Smash controller and Smash-themed Switch's release date (Nov 2) will correspond with a demo's release on the same day, mainly to push those bundles and avoid bad PR for releasing a Smash Switch with no game. This also means I believe Nintendo will reveal the full roster prior to this demo's release date.

I dont equate, "not getting many more characters" with, "Being pessimistic."
But I also dont count new echoes as much more than alt skins, given the forcing of the numbers.

So I can see two outcomes from these latest news.

Either we'll see no real Smash news 'till November, or Sakurai is trolling us and we're literally getting a Smash direct tomorrow.

I count the former as the more likely ending.
To take it a step further, I predict that we'll get a last-ditch smash direct by the middle of November where we'll see the rest of the roster and not a moment sooner. Until then, the only real news we'll get are item and music reveals.
