Many of you were talking about whether or not you want a port of Smash 4 on the switch as the next game or a straight up smash 5. I've been giving it a lot of thought recently and I've decided I'd prefer a port over Smash 5 for a couple of reasons, the most obvious being the seemingly impossibility of Smash 5 having a stronger roster than Smash 4. Here are a couple of things I would do to make the port the best possible version of Smash 4 there could be:
First things first, I don't think we need a major overhaul of new characters added to a Switch port. I believe two Veterans in Wolf and The Ice Climbers would be sufficient and one Newcomer in the Inkling does the job well enough. Additionally, Snake would be a well received veteran to come back but for obvious legal reasons we've always seen his return as unlikely. The other veterans all have like 2 fans ( No offense to anyone who is a fan of Squirtle, Ivysaur, PT, Pichu, or Young Link ). Inkling is the obvious newcomer choice for being the main character in what has been one of the most successful Nintendo IPs right out of the gate and that's coming from someone who has never owned or played either of the Splatoon games ( Yeah I know, I'll get there one day ). Seriously, Splatoon is the fourth best selling game on the Switch right now just behind the juggernauts of Odyssey, Zelda, and Mario Kart. This is also why I don't see the point of having an ARMS character in a Smash 4 port, the game is not popular enough and has not gained an immediate fan following to merit a new character in Smash right away. No new third parties are necessary in a port either in my opinion ( Unless somehow Snake returned ) due to there already being many of them in Smash 4.
So there wouldn't be a huge focus on new characters, but instead a focus on new modes or combining content from the Wii U and 3DS version, etc. Smash Run can be brought over from the 3DS version, maybe be updated with a few enemies, allow for players to interact with each other during the power up gaining part of the mode, and online play should be added to Smash Run. Adding the Adventure mode from Melee or something similar to it back into the game would be a much welcomed addition as Smash 4 really has no equivalent to that or the Subspace Emissary. Another thing I wouldn't mind seeing return would be Break the Targets and maybe each fighter can have their own unique stage just like in the melee days. Maybe also add a couple new stages such as an Ice Climbers and Splatoon Stage and bring some of the stages from the 3DS version into the port ( Magicant, Paper Mario, and The Pokemon Stages stick out in my mind ) All of the trophies and extra content like that from the 3DS and Wii U versions should also be brought together.
All of this in my opinion makes for the perfect Smash 4 port, but of course this is just my opinion, I'd be curious to see whether you guys want Smash 5 or a port of Smash 4 on the switch ( Even if the port happens, Smash 5 can still come to the Switch later of course ) and if you want the port what you think should be done to Smash 4 to make it better.
This is so hard to answer.
On one hand, a port would make a lot of sense. Smash 4 had an incredible roster filled with great retro picks, fabulous additions to already existing franchises, and some of the most well known faces in the gaming industry in the presence of 3rd parties.
Cuts of any kind, especially the 3rd parties, would be heartbreaking to many fans. Even they clone characters have their fans.
If we get a port, it would nice to have a guarantee of everyone returning. I feel a port would make a lot of people happy. However, on the flip side of that coin is the disgruntled fans who would’ve rather seen a Smash V, a standalone Smash for the Switch instead of a port from a failed console.
I feel a port should be combination of both Wii U and 3DS. Especially Smash Run. Give it online multiplayer, and people would go nuts. I see 3-5 new characters being added just to keep it fresh. 3 being more likely. Ice Climbers, Inkling, SpringMan/RibbonGirl, Decidueye, and Wolf. In that order. It’d be better to have unique newcomers rather than mostly veterans. I only put Ice Climbers first because they should have never been cut in the first, and the Smash community has put a large outcry for them. They were unique, and well loved, and sorely missed.
Now for a Smash V. It would be incredible for the Switch to have its own Smash game. New stages. New modes. New characters. Just new. It’s what I’d prefer, but that game is a few years away, and I think it’s safe to say we all want a Smash game for the Switch sooner rather than later. At the earliest, I see it coming in late 2019, butmore likely 2020. 3 years into the Switch’s life. Most Nintendo home consoles only have a lifespan of 5 years. With the Switch being a hybrid home and handheld console, it may last longer, but only time will tell.
Now for the sad parts. Cuts. Every Smash game brings cuts. A sad, but inevitable truth. Cuts seem to come in fives. Melee to Brawl we lost Pichu, Mewtwo, Young Link, Roy, and Dr. Mario. From Brawl to WiiU/3DS we lost Snake, Wolf, Ice Climbers, Squirtle, and Ivysaur. If the trend continues, I could see Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr. Mario, Ryu, and Cloud getting the chop. Luckily, with DLC, they could make a return. I believe all of the following characters are on the chopping block: Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr. Mario, Roy, Pac-Man, Cloud, Ryu, Mii Fighters. Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr. Mario, and Roy for them being clones. (Although Roy and Dr. Mario are further from being clones than Lucina or Dark Pit.), and Roy’s fan base may save him. Ryu and Cloud, for their 3rd Party status and just overall uncertainty in returning. Which I’d hate. Having Ryu and Cloud in Smash is surreal. It’s amazing, and they were both so well received and popular that I hope they return. The Mii Fighters were not well received, so far as I can see. It was neat being able to have “anyone” in Smash, but I don’t know. Something about them makes me think they could be cut, though I think it’s unlikely. It is still possible. I’d predict 18-22 newcomers DLC included. There isn’t really anyone else that I feel needs a spot in Smash. I don’t see characters like Daisy, Waluigi, and a whole slew of other pointless, unworthy, fillers to muddy up the roster when plenty of other characters exist that are more deserving, unique, and would bring newness and freshness to the roster. I don’t like the roster will go over 80-85 spots. It just becomes too much at some point.
To answer your question though. I’d be fine with either, but I’d prefer a Smash V at this point. Only slightly though. A port needs to be announced soon if we are getting one because I feel the window is closing, and I would hate to get a port of an already existing game, and then have to wait another 6-7 years for an entirely new Smash.
