Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Yes, those were dark times for the samurai.
I still wish Nintendo included Takamaru in Super Mario Maker.

I hope Nintendo will make Super Mario Maker for the Switch and Takamaru is in it.

So Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX got 5 new characters each. Probably just a coincidence, but man I would be so happy if we got 5 new characters for a Smash Bros. Deluxe.

Imagine the reveal trailer if Snake came back. ''Kept you waiting, huh?''

If we get 5 (or 6, as I predicted in the roster thread) it won't be all returning vets. MK8D had a mix of new guys and returnees.
But the only new characters in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were the Inklings (I'm not counting Gold Mario as that's just a recolor of Metal Mario).

Inklings can be the 6th character for SSB4 Deluxe along with the Brawl cut veterans.

I know it won't happen, but I'm wishing and hoping for various Quality of Life improvements. A compact UI for editing controls in the character select screen would be nice (at least enable/disable tap jump would go a long way). Settings should be saved between sessions; if not, make the blasted default stock instead of time. When entering a name tag, the letters should default to lowercase after the first letter.

I strongly endorse Inklings being added. I'm holding onto hope that their addition to Kart is a sign of things to come for Smash.

Actually, there's only one true newcomer right now, as all the other characters who aren't in the Wii U version are in the arcade version.

Five veterans? At the moment, I think only Ice Climbers and Wolf are possible, while we get a few more newcomers as well; the Inkling would be most notable right now.

If there's anything I'm confident will never happen in Smash, it's this.:urg:
I wish the game would keep the game settings I changed... I mean, the game already remembers which items and stages are disabled and enabled... why can't they program the game to make it remember I changed the battle mode setting to stock?

If there is one thing that will probably always elude me with Sakurai's design choices, it's probably this.....

I don't see any reason to look at Mario Kart or Pokemon for examples of how many characters could be added. Smash has always done its own thing. Now, Nintendo knows that unless they add some characters, people will feel like it's a cheap port, so they will most likely add some, and 3-5 is usually a good number for people to want to re-buy a game. I'm guessing it'll be more like 3 than 5.

So, first question. How long have I been gone that this became a thing?
Second: Is Excitebiker taken as a character? If not I'll bite I'll make a thread I don't have much to do right now.
Well it doesn't seem like it so I did.

It'll take more than just adding more characters to warrant getting a port though. Even with the updated Battle Mode, it's pretty much redundant to be getting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you already own the original Mario Kart 8, since Deluxe reuses all 48 race tracks that are in the original game. And of course, the stat distribution is far less balanced in Deluxe, as the best characters in terms of stat totals are all heavyweights; compare that to Mario Kart 8, where the only stat imbalance is the mini-turbo stat, which is stronger for the lightweight characters.

Sakurai probably has timed as the default because it is a more casual friendly mode than stock. Though the fact that you can't change the default is kind of dumb.

What if there is no next Smash Bros.?
Maybe we should prepare for Smashkken tournament, with only 30 playable characters. :105:

I don't know if that's a fair comparison, since Pokken Tournament is a new IP. What about Super Smash Bros. Infinite, the reboot that has significantly less characters that the previous games and drops a bunch of fan favourites?

So which franchise is the equivalent to the X-Men/F4 characters that all got cut?

Pokemon? Can't recall if Nintendo owns them 100%, or if it's split between them, Game Freak, the Pokemon Company, and whoever else.

Unfortunately for casuals, Pokken Tournament is more designed for hardcore players. Heck, even I'm not all that comfortable with playing that game.

I've already mentioned this before. It's entirely possible that with so much third party support from the last game, and a lot of focus lying in new third party characters, Smash crossing over with Tekken or other fighting games. It shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Maybe they will make two Smash games, one port and one crossover / reboot. Smash Wii U and 3DS are two different games after all. They might continue the trend of having two games.

All I want is just Diddy Kong staying at this point. But it was clear he was one of the most hated characters last time... so that actually worries me for his chances.

If we have some new Pokemon in Smash, I'd like it if they evolve for their final smash (sorta similar to Giga Bowser)

We already have that. Mega Evolutions. And they can actually change back without destroying basic Pokemon logic.
It has happened in the manga before with Red's Eevee (before it properly evolved it could transform into any of the Eeveelutions (we knew of back then) and back) though that implies that Smash would acknowledge the manga.

Hell, everything Pokemon related in Smash seems to draw from the Anime, why not let the Manga get some love?

Oh, I forgot about that. Sorry! :023:
Not a problem!

make the blasted default stock instead of time.

If any lacking functionality in Smash hurts, it is this. :062:

Ugh... how I long for this. That and the ability to change basic game mode options without leaving the character select screen. That would enable us to quickly change settings without fear of 0.9.

Nah, the most hated character is probably Bayonetta (because she is pretty strong; like Fox in Melee strong, only there isn't a Melee Falco/Marth/Sheik level character near here).

Besides that, you're safe. IDK what you're worried about. Diddy Kong is as safe as Luigi at this point in a main Smash title. If we get spin-offs of the series obviously Diddy might not make an appearance, but otherwise he is safe.

I agree with you there, Bayonetta is pretty powerful and can be very tough against some characters

Am I the only one who thinks we won't be seeing Smash at E3 anymore?

With ARMS and the now revealed Pokken Tournament DX I just don't think Nintendo will shell out 3 fighting games in a year.

Also, if they do that's burning through a lot of their major 1st party franchises in the first year of the Switch's lifespan.

To be honest it's a tad upsetting that Pokken Tournament gets a port (or an announcement for one) before Smash Bros U/3DS.

With the recent leaks proven to be false I feel like there may not be any Smash Bros news at E3 unless they really want to throw us a fastball to leave us dazed in awe; however it still feels like it'd be unlikely at this point. Maybe it was super wishful thinking, but I figured they'd surprise us with some sort of announcement and mention the port will be released alongside the final Smash Amiibo. But perhaps it is still too soon for a port release, or maybe they're just waiting till the Holiday season.

Thinking on it, it would be kinda cool if they had plans for a special edition Smash Bros Switch & bundle in the works and are just holding off on it for the Holiday season. Seems unlikely, but one can dream. Perhaps I'm getting too impatient or maybe they have something much bigger than a port in the works. Maybe they're planning to port A LOT from both versions so nothing ends up cut.

I guess only time can tell.

I've survived the long wait before, after all.

I'm not so much upset by Pokken because it had a pretty likely chance of being ported over. Also, that Decidueye tho.

It just seems likely the closer we get to E3 the less likely it seems Smash will make an appearance.

Nintendo's presentation for E3 is apparently only 30 minutes long, give or take, and we know they intend to talk about releases up through 2017. Whether that's a fiscal year or not has yet to be seen. However, we know there main focus is Super Mario Odyssey. It'll probably get anywhere between 8-10 minutes of showcasing. ARMS and Splatoon 2 will be briefly talked about 2-3 minutes tops. Then we have Fire Emblem Warriors, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and 3DS games (Kirby, UltraSun and UltraMoon, etc.)

It just seems unlikely now. We may not even get any new reveals for any games. That even seems unlikely now.

If we get anything about Smash, it'll be a teaser, and then them saying "We'll reveal more about this title at a later date. So stay tuned!" , and that it's coming in 2018. I still believe it'll be a port, and it's what I am hoping for. With a port there will be no cuts. Which is always something I dread. Cloud is amazing, and I don't want to see him go due to licensing issues.

Smash 4 on the Switch is almost definitely going to get shown at E3 or at least confirmed at E3.

Nintendo won't leave any stones unturned.

Smash 5 as a game might be confirmed too, but with no footage shown. If anything, Smash 5 is now in pre-production or just starting the beginning of the production.

At this point Nintendo is dealing with a lot of fighting games at once. I wonder how they'll effect each other.

Nintendo vs. Capcom needs to happen. That would be amazing. If Nintendo consoles will never have Marvel vs. Capcom games, then at the very least Nintendo vs. Capcom should be exclusive to Nintendo consoles.
