Welcome, Smashers, to the first of two tournaments I plan to host, entitled “Smashing through the Ages.” The theme is solid, the name is not. This tournament will play out just like a regular tournament. However, the characters that can be chosen and the stages allowed are specific.

To start off, the regular rules still apply:

  • This will be a 16-man tournament, 32 if I can get enough people. Double elimination. Randomly seeded brackets.
  • 3 stocks
  • 8 minutes
  • If a match ends with both players with the same amount of stocks, the winner is decided by percent. If that is equal as well, the winner will be decided by coin flip.
  • If matches are unplayable due to lag, that match shall be decided by coin flip as well. However, make an attempt and see if you have another person join your match, and have him SD at the beginning of the match. Having a third person can sometimes bridge the two connections together, providing a cleaner match.
  • Matches will be played best 2 out of 3, Loser’s, Winner’s, and Grand’s Finals 3/5 (however, I may change this. See the “Stages” section below)
  • Loser’s Pick stage selection (aka, CPs)
  • No Items
  • All stalling related techniques are banned, as is stalling in general.
  • Edge Grab Cap: 15 at a time and/or 90 total (15 x 6 = 90). If you grab the ledge 15 times in a row, the player MUST get back onto the stage (get-up attack, jump back onto the stage, etc.), and as such, make himself vulnerable to the opponent for a brief period. I do not think this will be a problem, but if the case does arise and someone does not adhere to this guideline, it is up to the players to call the other person on it, and provide evidence if they can.
  • If a match ends through the use of a sacrificial move/tactic (Dededecide, Bowsercide, Kirbycide, DK’s Cargo Hold (lol)), then the one who initiated said tactic is declared the victor.

Characters:

As the name implies, this tournament will be a reflection of a timeline – as this is the first tournament, the first 19 characters of Brawl(and by characters, I mean that their character models had appeared and were recognized) that appeared in video gaming's history are the only ones allowed. The 19 characters are as follows, along with the year they debuted, and the game they debuted in:

1) :gw: - 1980 – Game and Watch series
2) :dk2: - 1981 – Donkey Kong
3) :mario2: - 1981 – Donkey Kong
4) :luigi2: - 1983 – Mario Bros.
5) :peach: - 1985 – Super Mario Bros.
6) :bowser2: - 1985 – Super Mario Bros.
7) :popo: - 1985 – Ice Climber
8) :rob: - 1985 – Gyromite (with which he was a peripheral/accessory to, and as such was recognized)
9) :link2: - 1986 – The Legend of Zelda
10) :zelda: - 1986 – The Legend of Zelda
11) :samus2: - 1986 - Metroid
12) :pit: - 1987 - Kid Icarus
13) :snake: - 1987 – Metal Gear
14) :marth: - 1990 – Fire Emblem
15) :yoshi2: - 1990 – Super Mario World
16) :falcon: - 1990 – F-Zero
17) :sonic: - 1991 – Sonic the Hedgehog
18) :kirby2: - 1992 – Kirby’s Dreamland
19) :dedede: - 1992 – Kirby’s Dreamland

Stages

The approval requirement for banned stages has been met. So, for now, the stage list looks like this:

Starters

Final Destination
Battlefield
Smashville
Yoshi’s Island (Brawl)
Halberd

Counterpicks

Delfino Plaza
Luigi’s Mansion
Rumble Falls
Norfair
Port Town Aero Dive
Castle Siege
Jungle Japes
Rainbow Cruise
Green Greens
Big Blue
Brinstar
Yoshi’s Island (Pipes)

Bonus Stages

Mushroomy Kingdom I
Mushroomy Kingdom II
Mario Circuit
Bridge of Eldin
Summit
Skyworld
75 M
Mario Bros.
Flat Zone 2
Shadow Moses Island
Green Hill Zone
Temple

(If anyone is curious as to why Rumble Falls, Big Blue, and PTAD are in the CP list, it’s because I feel not enough extensive testing has been done to confirm them as being ban-worthy. This will serve as a test to see if some merit can be made with these three, and if it seems fair to include them in future tournaments. You are not required to play on these stages, but at least some friendlies with your opponents either before or after the match on these stages would be appreciated. Summit is in the original list’s CP list because only the Ice Climbers have a “tether” recovery out of the 19 available, and even then, they have Squall Hammer, so edges are not an issue. As for the fish, this tournament is meant to be fun with no monetary value coming out of it, so I think it can be a fun stage to play on and avoid it. Again, if you are CPed to this stage, you were warned)

Registration:

I am requiring you to proclaim your characters (3 at the maximum) when you sign up, so it will be easier to Counterpick stages. The format is as follows:

SWF username/Tags/Brawl Friend Code/characters

So, for example:

Sonic Storm/Josh/3094-1282-9792/:sonic: :luigi2: :dk2:

Miscellaneous Rules:

  • 45 post requirement.
  • If you spam/troll this thread, you will be banned from the thread, no questions asked.
  • No trash talking/insulting
  • Absolutely no Johns (I repeat, you have been warned)
  • Have fun!

This tournament has a tentative starting date at a week after today, January 20. It gives you a week to sign up, so no rush.

Knubs is lazy.

Shadowfirex100 / SogeK/ 3824-8826-1903/ :snake::random:

Yay for stages for him also.

If it's seeded by skill, you know I am good for it.

So, is it?

That might answer your question :)

If you notice, there are more high seeds than low seeds entering tourneys nowadays anyway, so seeding by skill isn't really necessary.

And regardless, can't you just join it for fun?

No. I want to enter a fair tourney, not one that has a probability of bracket ****** me in the first round. Can't imagine the neg press I would get for that. :dizzy:

So basically...you're scared?
Not really...just not stupid. If I were to enter an offline tourney, I would be seeded according to my skill level. It's in order to make the experience enjoyable for all, as opposed to just making it enjoyable for people who get lucky. If I wanted to win by playing lucky, I would use items.

Besides, the best players shouldn't have to face another good player immediately in the first round, and a championship match shouldn't be a walkover in anyone's favor.

Oh lawdy! I think thats what it boils down to

It's double elimination. If you're #2 and you lose to #1 first round then sweep the loser's bracket. 'nuff said

Oh and if you would be seeded by skill level who is the judge of that? The results on the PR came from tournaments seeded by bias or random brackets. How do we know they just didn't have an easy bracket?

How would all the lesser experienced people getting thrashed in the first round classify as "fun for all"? That's all I'll say on that.

I can't really argue with you considering it's your decision to enter, and not mine. I just thought that you should stop worrying about who you're going to play, how far you'll get, and how much rep you have and just have fun. Then again, not everyone thinks the same way. If those things are important to you, then meh, more power to you.

I'll stop spamming this thread now with my petty disagreements now.

2nd > 3rd still. 3rd must not be having a good day to lose to 4th so 2nd should have it in the bag ;)
Actually you didn't check the brackets. 3rd beat Second because he was bumed losing to first and his game was off. Now 1st fights 4th in the Winner Finals and JV 4 stocks. Umad?

As Cubone mentioned, the term "Randomly Seeded Brackets" is on the first post.

No. I want to enter a fair tourney, not one that has a probability of bracket ****** me in the first round. Can't imagine the neg press I would get for that. :dizzy:
Negative "press" from being screwed in the first round of an online tournament with character restrictions and, the way this is coming along, on stages where you can get killed at 0% by "higher seeded" players who know how off-key those certain stages are and will utilize that negative aspect to their advantage.

I meant for this to be a fun tournament without the hustle and bustle of rankings and the like. It's why I have Summit and Rumble Falls of all stages on the CP list, for one thing. Also, it's Double Elimination, so if you fall in the early rounds, you can come right back in the Loser's Bracket.

I encourage you to join Kazoo, if only for the sake to unwind and play the game as it was meant to be, as a party game XD

Paladin/New tag/ Diff FC i got new wii/ :kirby:
Gonna need that stuff filled out before I can accept you.

Added people onto the second post. Also, and I'm sorry for not saying this earlier, but you have until next Wednesday, when the tournament starts, to switch out characters if you feel the need to. But when the tournament starts, you're stuck with who you've got.
