Mr. Johan
Smash Hero
Welcome, Smashers, to the first of two tournaments I plan to host, entitled “Smashing through the Ages.” The theme is solid, the name is not. This tournament will play out just like a regular tournament. However, the characters that can be chosen and the stages allowed are specific.
To start off, the regular rules still apply:
Characters:
As the name implies, this tournament will be a reflection of a timeline – as this is the first tournament, the first 19 characters of Brawl(and by characters, I mean that their character models had appeared and were recognized) that appeared in video gaming's history are the only ones allowed. The 19 characters are as follows, along with the year they debuted, and the game they debuted in:
1) - 1980 – Game and Watch series
2) - 1981 – Donkey Kong
3) - 1981 – Donkey Kong
4) - 1983 – Mario Bros.
5) - 1985 – Super Mario Bros.
6) - 1985 – Super Mario Bros.
7) - 1985 – Ice Climber
8) - 1985 – Gyromite (with which he was a peripheral/accessory to, and as such was recognized)
9) - 1986 – The Legend of Zelda
10) - 1986 – The Legend of Zelda
11) - 1986 - Metroid
12) - 1987 - Kid Icarus
13) - 1987 – Metal Gear
14) - 1990 – Fire Emblem
15) - 1990 – Super Mario World
16) - 1990 – F-Zero
17) - 1991 – Sonic the Hedgehog
18) - 1992 – Kirby’s Dreamland
19) - 1992 – Kirby’s Dreamland
Stages
The approval requirement for banned stages has been met. So, for now, the stage list looks like this:
Starters
Final Destination
Battlefield
Smashville
Yoshi’s Island (Brawl)
Halberd
Counterpicks
Delfino Plaza
Luigi’s Mansion
Rumble Falls
Norfair
Port Town Aero Dive
Castle Siege
Jungle Japes
Rainbow Cruise
Green Greens
Big Blue
Brinstar
Yoshi’s Island (Pipes)
Bonus Stages
Mushroomy Kingdom I
Mushroomy Kingdom II
Mario Circuit
Bridge of Eldin
Summit
Skyworld
75 M
Mario Bros.
Flat Zone 2
Shadow Moses Island
Green Hill Zone
Temple
(If anyone is curious as to why Rumble Falls, Big Blue, and PTAD are in the CP list, it’s because I feel not enough extensive testing has been done to confirm them as being ban-worthy. This will serve as a test to see if some merit can be made with these three, and if it seems fair to include them in future tournaments. You are not required to play on these stages, but at least some friendlies with your opponents either before or after the match on these stages would be appreciated. Summit is in the original list’s CP list because only the Ice Climbers have a “tether” recovery out of the 19 available, and even then, they have Squall Hammer, so edges are not an issue. As for the fish, this tournament is meant to be fun with no monetary value coming out of it, so I think it can be a fun stage to play on and avoid it. Again, if you are CPed to this stage, you were warned)
Registration:
I am requiring you to proclaim your characters (3 at the maximum) when you sign up, so it will be easier to Counterpick stages. The format is as follows:
SWF username/Tags/Brawl Friend Code/characters
So, for example:
Sonic Storm/Josh/3094-1282-9792/
Miscellaneous Rules:
This tournament has a tentative starting date at a week after today, January 20. It gives you a week to sign up, so no rush.
To start off, the regular rules still apply:
- This will be a 16-man tournament, 32 if I can get enough people. Double elimination. Randomly seeded brackets.
- 3 stocks
- 8 minutes
- If a match ends with both players with the same amount of stocks, the winner is decided by percent. If that is equal as well, the winner will be decided by coin flip.
- If matches are unplayable due to lag, that match shall be decided by coin flip as well. However, make an attempt and see if you have another person join your match, and have him SD at the beginning of the match. Having a third person can sometimes bridge the two connections together, providing a cleaner match.
- Matches will be played best 2 out of 3, Loser’s, Winner’s, and Grand’s Finals 3/5 (however, I may change this. See the “Stages” section below)
- Loser’s Pick stage selection (aka, CPs)
- No Items
- All stalling related techniques are banned, as is stalling in general.
- Edge Grab Cap: 15 at a time and/or 90 total (15 x 6 = 90). If you grab the ledge 15 times in a row, the player MUST get back onto the stage (get-up attack, jump back onto the stage, etc.), and as such, make himself vulnerable to the opponent for a brief period. I do not think this will be a problem, but if the case does arise and someone does not adhere to this guideline, it is up to the players to call the other person on it, and provide evidence if they can.
- If a match ends through the use of a sacrificial move/tactic (Dededecide, Bowsercide, Kirbycide, DK’s Cargo Hold (lol)), then the one who initiated said tactic is declared the victor.
