Smash Majors?

I was just thinking about how to help the smash scene grow. I think one of the biggest problems is people that can't afford to travel to every national tournament. With the US Open going on right now i started thinking.

I imagine that tennis players were in a similar predicament40 years ago. They couldn't travel to every tournament that was in another country. So what did they do? They went to all the local tournaments (they're affordable) and they decided to travel to only Wimbledon and the French Open. Then once the US open came around, they did the same thing, and again with the Australian Open.

So basically (again this isn't a revolutionary idea, we kind of already have this), i think a 'Major' system would help the community grow. People just go to they're local and regional tournaments and then they travel to, lets say 2 to 4 majors a year. Lets say Pound in February, Genesis in June, and Apex in October. Something like that.I don't care and it doesn't matter..

But what this does, is ensure that we have the highest level of competition at tournaments, and you get some ****ing hype. If theres only one NATIONAL every 3 or 4 months, everybody will want to watch it. Now you have mad hype for every national, and you'll be looking at attendance more like Pound IV than like at Apex2.

And maybe you have one tournament thats considered an un-official championship tournament or something. Like, if you can only afford to travel to one, make it this one.

Any thoughts?

The only problem with four nationals a year is that a lot of players don't have the money to travel to those, except the ones who always place in the money at nationals and regionals. Or have a job that they can conveniently take the weekends off of. Also Im pretty sure tennis players have sponsors and whatnot, and while competitive gaming IS taking that direction its not quite there yet. But it would be awesome to have four nationals a year, and if I could go to all four even more awesome.

You know to invest in melee wouldn't be a bad idea when you think about it everyone brings recoding equipment, melee holders , melee, TVs, power strips and etc. you just need a venue a and a few of each of the following, and power to the building for the TVs and AC.

They run them selfes and it's seriously free suppy and labor you just want some ADs and junk to get money and tell popular posters to hype this s*** and tell them to demand MMs with kage and junk.

there already are 'majors'

if there's any doubt about whether a tournament is 'major', then it isn't; it's that simple

I wonder how well a ranking + invite system would work? That might be a good way for T.O's to make money. I'd gladly go to a tourney where the organizer gets a 30% cut if 1-3 place got invited to the national.

No, he basically wants what's already going on except better. Of course, this is an ideal so it'll inevitably end up falling short, giving us what we have now. :D

saw thread title and thought of a college course LOL.

but yeah, this is in effect somewhat, it would be cool to have smash "seasons" where the tournaments occur around the same time every year and are somewhat connected.

maybe have a points system and have a community sponsored event @ the end of the seasons & have the top 16-48 people/teams based on points enter a championship tourney (as mentioned above) & have an amateur bracket for everyone else that wants to come for the the chance to enter the champion tourney (maybe top 8 of am bracket). this is obv influenced by MLG seasons & the am bracket they did @ ownapolooza recently

ps, I don't expect this to happen, I just kinda had this idea after reading the OP and felt like getting my thoughts out

I think four would be too much. I think 2 or 3 would be ideal. This whole situation is just ideal. It probably won't happen i know, and it's just an improvement on what we already have. I just think that it would help the community a lot. and yes, tennis players have loads of sponsors and stuff, but they didn't 40 years ago when tennis started becoming an international event. Still different, but there are some similariteis.
