I don't get why people keep focusing on X's protagonist. This is Smash, not PSABR.

Literally the first time the idea crossed my mind.

Hell, this is the first time I've thought about X since the original trailer.

So... why's everyone expecting Layton? I mean, the series isn't owned by Nintendo, so he'd end up being a 3rd party character. Are people actually expecting him, or just kind of hoping?

Hoping, I'd reckon.

Layton is a sort of grey area though. Nintendo handles all of the localisation, including the dubbing (which means Nintendo are partly responsible for making us fall in love with the characters through their choices in actors). And Nintendo has always had Professor Layton on the "Nintendo Characters Hub" on their official site. And like Mega Man, lots of people outright think he is a Nintendo character through and through, he's one of the UK's most requested characters for Smash, and his series has undoubtedly moved DS and 3DS systems. Even if he is a third party, he still really deserves a spot.

Also, now feels like the most relevant time to reveal him if he is in Smash, as Azran Legacy recently released in the US, and PLvsAA just released in the UK.

Well, fine sir. It seems that if Professor Layton was to be in this game, now would be the prime time to reveal him.

Even though I don't expect him at all this direct, there's this tugging feeling at my gut that he's going to be revealed tomorrow. I was right the last two times.

I haven't played the game, but I haven't heard one bad thing about it. I'd be happy enough if his fans were rewarded, he seems pretty cool. And it looks like the franchise is continuing on Wii U.

Whether or not her tweet meant anything, I would think probably not. But it still influenced me to place a bet that he's unveiled tomorrow. If he isnt, I gotta make my buddy a batch of homemade beef jerky. If Shulk IS unveiled, he's gonna make his girlfriend make me a huge batch of her awesome salsa dip

Awesome salsa dip is always awesome. I have a few friends who are dying to have Shulk in Sm4sh. Let's see what happens.

I was surprised that Layton has gotten requests at first, but I guess if Capcom can put Phoenix Wright (a lawyer) in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, then Nintendo can put a professor in Smash Bros.

Unlike Wright, Layton actually has established fighting prowess and agility in his own games. While I wouldn't want them to do this, you could easily make him a Marth clone. I'm not even kidding.

It would be an odd choice - especially considering the last trailer heavily suggests Shulk will also be in X. It wouldn't be awful if they chose this possible new protagonist, but the lack of any established information about him makes Shulk the more believable choice, especially with his continued relevance in X.

I personally think that a character like Shulk is extremely likely. Just take a look at all the characters we got from last years E3. Megaman, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer all share one particular thing with each other, they all represent franchises that haven't been represented before in a smash game. Now I don't know if they deem this Direct as important as the E3 one, but I would assume they might want to keep following that trend they set themselves with last direct.

Of course they might decided to take a whole different route with this direct, maybe by showing fan favourites this time around. That said I do think Sakurai tried to get a point across last E3 with the character reveals which makes me very positive about the chances Shulk has of being in this game, regardless of if they show him this direct.

Not to be a party pooper, but Animal Crossing was represented a lot in Brawl. Trophies, a stage, heck, Villager made an appearance on that stage! Unless you mean character wise...

I mean, he's a better choice than Pac Man, and while most of his games are on Nintendo consoles, he doesn't have that long history the other third parties have. Also, his popularity doesn't come close to that of Sonic, Mega Man, or even Snake.
