While I'm pretty sure on Nintendo's side this is heavily motivated by the $s(which isn't necessarily a bad thing), I can actually see a lot of people finding this to be a cool addition. So it's not exactly pointless or screwing over the consumer.

I looked up pics of it. It does look hilarious, partly because how out of place it is.
