In all fairness to Undertale and game polls, GameFAQs itself is nothing more than a big joke. I've never been a personal acquaintance with someone who actually took that site seriously. I was enjoying Undertale winning (despite not having played it myself, I want to but have like 500 other games to finish first) because of how much it was bugging them because the over-the-top reactions were amazing. I mean, people were talking about paying actual money to make sure it lost to some of these games. I'm a huge fan of a lot of the games that lost to Undertale and yet it doesn't really matter to me because it's just for fun. I've seen a lot of people who have really, really enjoyed Undertale, and as all of us here are Nintendo fans, we should be more than familiar with the idea of a game becoming an instant big hit. We've seen it happen again and again over the past few decades, and suddenly it's a problem when we're all adults and how it "threatens" our favorite childhood games/series, as if Undertale being popular means that we can't enjoy Super Mario World or Final Fantasy VII anymore.
It bugs me that we're more critical of newer games having volatile fans because the truth is, every fanbase has them. Pokemon has them, Sonic has them, and so on and so on. Yet we give a pass to them because they're such long lasting series, so it's considered normal for people to be so unhealthily attached to them. It's a double standard and nothing more. Every series is going to have the best of people and the worst of people, regardless of longevity.
