i have never even played Project M and i'm all like

on an unrelated note, if I decide to set up one of those HyperSpin cabinets, I'd buy a bunch of USB controllers and accessories to accurately simulate gameplay (the joysticks and buttons on the cabinet would be used for arcade games and consoles with very simple control schemes)

People will still be playing it, of course, but to get the Project M zip file, you'll have to find a mirror. Project M's team has disbanded and everything has been removed from the site.

The game can still be aquired throught mirrors, and while its sad it wont be updated, I think its for the best that they persue making theyr own IP and products they can make money from. I still think Smash 4 is the best Smash, so I rather take something new, even if similar, than another (albeit better) version of Brawl.

They claim for it to be that they're moving onto different projects. The Devs are sticking together, just no longer working on the mod.

All official sources have been very tight-lipped over the issue, besides claimed that it's not a Cease & Desist.

I don't think we'll ever know what actually happened behind the scenes. Rumours are flourishing due to lack of information, especially because the downloads have been taken down as well.

I don't particularly care about Project M. I've never played it, nor did I ever intend to. That said, something doesn't seem right here...

Nintendo has known about PM for quite a while. We know this, they acknowledged it at E3 last year. In fact, the reason they never mentioned it specifically so they could avoid shutting them down. If they wanted to stop PM, why wouldn't they have already done it? If they thought it was effecting Sm4sh sales, why did they leave it alone so long after the game came out?

In short, why now?

To be fair, Nintendo was never comfortable with Project M. VGBootCamp stopped streaming it and it was removed from the APEX '15 lineup.

But if I had to guess, some of the stuff they made in the last few weeks/months was not so different from Smash 4; see Roy and ZSS. I wonder if that prompted them.
