If you've ever once thought that your opponent was a one-trick pony, then this would have been the tournament for you.

Sir "O" Presents: Know Your Enemy!

The tournament that's all about playing your opponent. Know Your Enemy is a standard 32-person Double-Elimination tournament with one shocking twist: the character you play is in your OPPONENT'S hands.

That's right. In this tournament, each competitor will be in the unusual position of choosing his OPPONENT'S character, and vice-versa. Think you know the character your opposition will have trouble using? Choose that character on him and watch the guy flail around. But remember that the knife cuts both ways, and you might get stuck with a character you never expected to use. Even worse, you might end up choosing a character for your opponent that he's a secret butt-kicker with! You never know what might happen in this very complicated game of Indian Poker.

Standard Tournament Rules:​

• Each match will be 3 stock matches, best 2 out of 3 matches. A 3/5 set will determine the winner in the final round.

• An 8:00 timer is optional, but not required. HOWEVER, if either player desires the time limit, the timer MUST be set. This desire must be made clear BEFORE the match starts.

• No items. (Of course.)

• Stage choice for the matches can be decided in one of three ways:
  -Agreement: Players may agree to play on a stage before the match begins.
  -The "striking" method: Each player alternately "strikes" a neutral from the list, and both play on the remaining stage.
  -Double random neutral: Each player simply randoms the neutral when they play the match.
  
  In cast of a disagreement, use the stage-striking method.

• The loser of the previous match is allowed to counterpick their stage from any neutral stage not banned by either opponent.
  
  Players will devise a way to indicate their counterpicks to each other before the match starts. The easiest ways to do this are:
  -Indicating your CP before the match begins.
  -Chatting via AIM/YIM/MSN/etc. during play to indicate CPs (not recommended, as it effects connection).
  -Using your online name/profile quote to indicate your CP.

• If time runs out, winner is determined by stock, then percentage if necessary.

• Bowsercide victory rule is in effect.

• Excessive stalling through glitches is banned.

• Infinite combos, spamming, chain grabs, and "cheap" tactics ARE allowed. Get past them or admit you suck.

• Infinite combos must end before 250% damage is reached. Anything beyond that point is considered stalling.

Online Match Rules:​

• You're expected to play through the lag if there is a bad connection.

• In the event of a disconnect, if one person is clearly at fault, they forfeit that specific battle (not the entire match). If fault can't be clearly attributed to anyone, the battle should just be replayed if possible.

• In the event that both players agree a match to be unplayable, the match will be declared a draw.

• If a person is challenged and doesn't present themselves by the tournament deadline, it is an automatic win for the challenger.

• Make your presence known. Because you don't have any specific person you must face at any specific time, finding matches should be no problem for you. Post on this topic and actively PM people for challenges.

• It's important that you remain active. If you don't present yourself within the alloted time, you will be eliminated, no questions asked.

Know Your Enemy Special Rules:​

• In this tournament, you don't choose your own character, you choose your OPPONENT'S character for both rounds.
  
  -In the first round, a double-blind choice is recommended to avoid counterpicking. This is best achieved by having a neutral party hear and announce both characters to the players. I'm happy to do this if I'm available. AIM/YIM/MSN is a great way to go about this, as is PMing the neutral party.
  
  UPDATE: There's actually an easier way!
  
  

  • At the beginning of your first match, select your opponent's character for yourself. They will do the same.

  • Start the first match, see who your opponent picked, then no-contest the match.

  • Select that character, then restart the match.

  -After the first (and second if necessary) round, the WINNER announces the character the LOSER plays first. The loser then choses the winner's character and the stage they will play on. This can be achieved in the same way as stage counterpicks (see above).

• Each player may ban any ONE [1] STAGE from use during their entire run of the tournament. This stage may NOT be selected against them or chosen via random. Any stage may be banned, but the stage banned CANNOT be changed after the first match is played. Players must indicate their banned stage when they register.

• Each player may ban any THREE [3] CHARACTERS from being chosen for them to play.
  
  BANNING CHARACTERS IN YOUR MATCHES DOES NOT EFFECT ANYONE ELSE'S MATCHES.
  
  Like the player-banned stage, the banned characters must be indicated upon registration, and can't be changed after the person's first match has been played.
  
  (Pokemon Trainer counts as a single character. Zelda/Sheik and Samus/ZSS count as separate characters. However, if Sheik is banned, Zelda may not change into her AT ALL during the match. The reverse also applies.)

• There are no counterpick stages. Although the actual process of counterpicking is still allowed, all matches will be played on NEUTRAL stages due to the nature of this tournament's rules. If both players agree to a CP stage, however, it's alright to play on one.

• *NEW RULE (December 18)* If you choose a character from your opponent's banned list, you must PUBLICLY choose again, and they're immediately allowed to counterpick your choice.

• Round 1 is scheduled to last until Monday, December 29th. This is an extended deadline due to the holiday season, and should give everyone a chance to play their matches. Should scheduling conflicts arise, inform me as quickly as possible, so that steps may be taken regarding the situation.

The idea of double-blind is that you don't get to counterpick by hearing your opponent's pick first. For instance, if I wanted to choose DeDeDe for my opponent, he doesn't get to find out until we play. Otherwise, he could just force me to use DK or Mario and I'd be all but finished.

The way double-blind works is you work out a way between the two of you to reveal both of your choices at the same time (usually via a third, neutral person). That way, you are on an even playing field in the first round.

During the second rounds, the winner must choose the loser's character first in order to give the loser a chance to counterpick the character. It's sort of a reverse CP, if you will.
