I have heard, that there are people that go to tournaments despite the fact that they are ill. What should we do about them? I mean, they are spreading out the disease even they know they are sick and there's lot of people gathered in somewhat concise rooms. It just makes me angry to think that those people make the choice to risk everyone else there to get diseased. Smash is just a game, it is in nowhere as important as people's health, everyone should know that!

What bothers me also is that even top pro-level players give bad example to other players with this issue. At genesis 2 dr.peepee was sick I heard. That's just not a right place to be at all if you are sick. Let me tell you how it goes: You do not go to tourneys when you are sick! Pp are we clear with the issue here?

I used to go to tourney's, and many times there was always someone sick who was coughing to my neck when I played. It just made me so mad and angry. I was like damn, are these people so addicted to this game that they go even they are sick? Or is it just that they don't care about other people's health at all? In this thread we will discuss about the sick-player issue; share the unpleasant experiences with sick players to collaborate us to realize the problem and try to think how to solve it.

You have to realize that alot of people pay ALOT of money to get these tournaments. Not going because you had a bad cough or a headache would just be the stupidest thing ever. Think of it as school people go to school with sore throats all the time. Yeah some people get sick but its a fact of life. If you really don't wanna get sick you can be a bubble boy/girl.

And here we go again with the money being so important. And yeah that happens, but it doesn't mean it should happen. Just that something happens is not a good argument for it to be ok and that it should happen in the future.

It depends on the severity of the sickness really. Like if your feverous and throwing up please don't come, but if its just a sore throat or a bad cough I really don't view it as all that bad.

@Hbox: I would expect it to be even worse because you don't wanna miss the tournament in general plus it probably destroys your ability to play

What about when you get an itchy throat for some reason in the middle of the day? No cold or nothing. Just an itchy throat.

You cant group those peeps in the same category.

let's not rehash human rights that have been brought up in bioethics in cases such as typhoid mary blah blah blah

we're all adults and make our own decisions. we have to live with the results. use ur better judgment and if you're afraid of illness, either avoid these people or tournaments yourself altogether

you can only control what you do, not the actions of others

Often people want to practice/prepare for tournaments and play all night eating pizza and other stuff, not realizing that the body is worn out by lack of sleep and healthy food. I think the best way to prepare for a tournament is getting your sleep, eating normal and not smashing too much, so your mind and body are fit for when you want it to be.

Of course its not a way to not get sick ever, but it helps a lot.

Honestly, I have no problem with sick people being at a tournament provided that they make others aware of their current state of health. It sucks, but when it comes down to it... I'd rather spend time with the people that I rarely get to see and appreciate those moments, even knowing that several days later I would get sick, then get over it a week or two later.

Edit: This is directed toward large scale tournaments. If you are like deathly ill and forcing yourself to to go a local, you are an idiot.

if its a smaller tournament I would pass it up in favor of not spreading my sickness. but a national I've planned months in advance? helllllllllll no

People should drink green tea I barely get sick and if so only for a day. I understand though you should stay home when you're sick, though it will bomb you and people out that wanted to see you at a big tournament. You probably won't be at your best and wasted your time.

Tea isn't magic. You're probably just young with a good immune system.
I know people who drink and smoke heavily and never get sick at all.

I never seem to be sick when I go to a tournament.
I always seem to get sick on the way home/right after I leave.

Since most people never bother telling you they're sick and you end up shaking their hand after matches... it's a recipe for disaster. I got H1N1 from an Iowa tournament this way (it wasn't that bad... I did miss 3 days of work though).

Truth :|
I wound up with something pretty wicked after Zenith

This is why pounding (or fist bumping I guess <_<) should be the standard hahaha

From what I heard he had the flu before the tournament and was just weak during cause his body had not fully recovered. So if that's true he didn't go sick just went worn out. I had the flu that ended like the Thursday before pound 5 and I also played terrible, but i'm pretty sure I was not contagious at that point just still drained.

Edit : Although even if he did have the flu during the actual tournament, its still unreasonable to ask some one flying cross country to just waste their plane tickets and in PP's case possible chance at a lot of money. I see your point for locals though.

But really, don't go to locals sick, don't go to Nationals vomiting unless you're gonna win money, in which case wear a bio suit. Also, it's a melee tournament. If you don't get sick after it anyway you're ****ing doing it wrong

I went to Genesis 2 because I started with my illness 2 Mondays ago and figured it would clear up(it got worse) and paid that stupid 400 dollar ticket that I couldn't get back if I didn't go.

I avoided people for the most part and pounded instead of shook hands to help avoid spreading the illness.

Troll thread is troll but this whole thing frustrates me ridiculously so I'm responding just this once hopefully.

You post in every thread in Melee discussion, and in half of these posts you feel the need to tell everybody how you're from Jamaica and you're going to Apex 2012, even though it was in your location for a long time.

We get it.

Anyways, I don't really mind sick people going to tournaments if it's something really small and harmless. If, like, you're on the edge of life and death, yeah, stay home buddy.

I don't think you understand his situation. You see, he's from Jamaica.

Screw you. We're nice to our guests.

Please tell us more about Jamaica.

And I would jump at the chance to play many of the best players if it meant catching the plague. ;)
