To change the subject from XcX a bit... have you guys played the Pokemon SUPER Mystery Dungeon?

I-I am really astounded, that a pokemon game managed to make me cry, and feel so invested in their characters.
Haven't played a game that good since a good while. The story get's a complete 10/10 from me, and belongs to my top 10 stories.
Everyone who says it needs a "long tutorial" is wrong. It's literally plot, the game makes you feel, even if you -do- random missions, it makes you feel like you advance the plot. Nearly after everything you do, you get bit forshadowing, a few info, a fun new mechanic, all that stuff.

Heck... it's really amazing. I need a few days to recover from that. Even moved me to tears...

Well the tournament was interesting. Still not getting the same results I was getting before taking a break from Smash for about 5-6 months (real life caught up to me bad).

Round 1 was Bye'd.

Round 2... I saw who I was up against and it must've been fate. It was the Marth that traumatised me on Friday. On the train there, I was playing matches against Marth CPU on 3DS just to get a feel for his new range. Keeping in mind some of the things that ExcaliburGuy ExcaliburGuy said, like how Shulk still outranges Marth, I managed to keep out of tipper range and win. He swapped to Dr. Mario and I was a bit lost at what to do. I don't know if the early% Shield shenanigans work, so lost Round 2, and won Round 3 with a do-or-die Vision on his f-smash.

Round 3, I was up against one of the best players in the scene. Though for some reason he was playing Jiggs instead of Sheik. He also broke my shield and missed Rest and I mashed out of the stun, the crowd loved that. I think I could've beaten him, but simply not knowing what to do in the matchup got the better of me. And got me 0-deathed from edgeguarding. (Like Doc, no one here plays Jigglypuff either). 0-2.

Round 4 I was up against Lucas. Like literally every other character I've come to in this tournament, I've never faced them in a competitive match. B-reversed PK Fires all over, Rope Snakes. Jump Art recovered high and just nicked the last hit of dair and died. 0-2.

tl;dr, I do feel like I played better than I have been lately, but still scrubbed out due to going against characters that I've not encountered in a competitive sense before. I was planning to unveil my terrible Cloud at this event but it didn't happen, lol.

I think a lot of my defence of this game (and many others) is out of "let's give credit where credit is due", so I find that with this game I'm often arguing that despite not being Xenoblade Chronicles, it's still a damn fine game.
As for Tatsu, I take back a bit of what I said before about him not meaning to be like Riki. There are certainly elements of him that are meant to emulate Riki's role of "cute mascot character", such as his sense of self-importance and his cute appearance being juxtaposed against the cruel things he says. Again, my "credit where credit is due" senses kick in since there's a lot of people who'll say Tatsu sucks because he isn't Riki.

I personally think there's a tonne of character-building and it all plays into the world-building. It's all in the Affinity Quests. Ironically, that's where a lot of the depth in the plot lies too, and I think a lot of people miss that point.
I will give credit where credit is due with any game. Xeno X is a good game, A massive world, cool enemies, soooooo much content, and other things.
I will never like Tatsu. Not because he's not Riki. That's not how I roll with how much I like something. But when the character is basically just a fly that wont leave you alone. Then theres nothing there to help them in my eyes. I'm not going to explain why I dislike Tatsu again, because this would be the 3rd time on this website that I've done that and I'm sure you guys don't wanna read that over and over again.

Speaking of Shulk. Theres something I did a couple days ago that may be something, though its probably nothing. Even if its nothing I may as well share it.
Shulk's Uair is a 2 hit move and during a fight with a Cloud that did a lot of Fast Fall Uair's, I thought. "Hey, maybe I can combo something with a fast fall Uair with Shulk". Lo and Behold I Fast Fall Uair'd Cloud and before the second hit of Uair I landed and did a Usmash and KO'ed with it. I thought this was interesting so I kept trying it. I didn't see anyone escape it, but I don't think its a true combo, but if it is then this can be pretty big. A true combo into one of the strongest Usmash's in the game (8th with no arts I believe and 2nd with Smash on) can be delicious. Probably wouldn't be tier breaking, but Shulk would move up a few slots.

Aside from some overly long, repetitive cutscenes near the end (Don't give up Don't give up Don't give up Don't give up), the story is indeed up there with Explorers, with a very surprising twist at the end for veterans.

All the nods to past Mystery Dungeon are nice too.

Heh heh sorry guys for going back to XCX. :p
I've never really done missions or quests in games for whatever reason. I'll pick them up, but i'll rarely go out of my way to do them unless I'm doing a 100% run or the items I get really good. So that also goes with the collectibles thing to. So things like that don't exactly affect me. Also I've learned my lesson about doing affinity missions in Xeno X. The combat is honestly the same to me. The only differences between the 2 games combat are new/good/bad differences in Xeno X (Monster limbs, new arts, much smaller everything, skells, ect.)
At this point, all I can say is I just like Xenoblade 1 more. In fact. Maybe me playing Xenoblade 1 like 3 times in the first year and playing so much Pokémon recently too actually started playing it kinda made me sick of rpgs and that's why I'm not enjoying Xeno X as much as everyone else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Well I wouldn't say that the basic missions are any good since they are the generic, go kill this go fetch this quests. Good for just having on the side or for collectibles, submitting when you already have the goods.

The normal missions are the missions I refer to, the ones given by NPCs. These missions are different and some are pretty unique, showing the various changes occur in the world due to new events, or Xeno interaction. Like there is a quest chain about constructing a water plant which actually gets constructed after 2 quests and then maintaining the plant. Then whole chains around new alien species you might befriend. A quest series might be about a rival (who doesn't say that you are ganging up on him with 4 members xD) who you battle across Mira. A murder mystery, then a whole series as a homage to Back to the Future, interesting stuff. Some are still more generic but yea, definitely pick these up when you see someone with a question mark on the map.The best thing is that unlike the original Xenoblade, you won't have to track down the NPCs during certain moments of the day or areas since locations are fixed at all times. And if locations change and you are required to report to them, you get the track ball.

And the affinity quests as you mentioned, which are pretty good AND get you a really powerful Art, otherwise exclusive to a party member.

If you have a problem collecting some items or finding some monsters, I would recommend this spreadsheet floating on the net called Xenoblade Chronicles X - A guide to everything. Really exhaustive in listing almost everything in the game.

Really wish XCX had a better bestiary (considering the amount of monsters) and a way to track collectible (general locations) without using such things haha.

I've not touched the series since Blue Rescue Team (awesome game) and I'm thinking of getting this one. My backlog just has too many unplayed games in it right now for me to justify getting it at the moment. Sadly :/
I know Blue Rescue Team had a lot of really emotional moments in it.

I've been thinking of labbing this out for a while now, I know that in the Cloud patch when Shulk lost 2 frames off his aerials, someone in this thread actually brought up the fact that he can pretty reliably kill by fast-falling the first hit of up-air into f-smash and u-smash. Doesn't true combo, but the window to escape is pretty tight. I'm not used to using that move so liberally just yet...

Oh cool. It sucks that something that found was already said, but still. Which Smash attack is faster? Fsmash or Usmash? Because whichever one of those is faster means its more difficult to escape. We can also do other moves and mix it with arts like Buster for maybe first hit Uair to Utilt maybe?. And we can make the timing more strict with the Jump art because we fall faster with Jump on, but that makes the timing on hitting Uair a lot more strict as well. Risk reward thing I guess. In fact. I'm out of school because of that storm going though here, and i'll probably be out tomorrow because its not getting any better till late tomorrow, so I got some time to test this out. I'll do some testing on this, then i'll post it.

Finally! I can do something to help out the Shulk meta! I'm really feeling (Yes I went there) important!
Also. did they buff Shulks pummel? I was testing and Buster pummel did 5% not 4%.

Looks like fsmash hits first. However you'll have to remember where the opponent will go (behind you) and aim that way. Usmash has more active frames through. I'm not sure if one's a better option than the other, though with fsmash you've got remember which way to hit.

Ok. So I have my results of testing out FF Uair to *Name a move* in a wordpad document, and I tried copy and pasting the results, but for some reason it undoes the spaces and it reverses the word order...I have absolutely no idea why it does this or how to undo that, so if I cant find out why it does that and reverse it. I'll just post it as a file and just have the intro-esque paragraph outside of the file.
LordTakeo LordTakeo Yes, I have also played Super Mystery Dungeon. The feels I felt while playing that game...so many feels. Without spoiling anything, I'm just gonna say. This game reaaaally pushed the idea of "Never give up till its over." Which I LOVE so much. Too many people give up to easily. I'm not one of those people. Theres a replay I have of me playing Corrin fighting a Rosalina that makes this lesson pop. I'll try and upload it later and post it if I can, but back on topic now. I highly recommend Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. Prepare your feels if you play this game though. I'm obviously not doing a whole review here. Basically I give it 9.5/10. Amazing everything, but its kinda slow sometimes.

Welp. I'm risking a Double Post Warning by posting after one of my posts...If this revives the Shulkboards then it'll be worth it. XD
*THIS IS THE FIRST HIT OF UP AIR ONLY, NOT SECOND*
Anyway. I'm posting the Uair to *Move* file here instead of making a new thread for it. Oh well. Here it is. The results are in! I hope my work didn't go to waste!

It's weirdly formatted because I typed this in Word and not Notepad. Also there's a couple grammar and spelling mistakes. Oops.

Welp. Undertale has sorta taken my band over. I'm learning a few songs like Asgore, Megalovania, and Death by Glamour on my Clarinet, and I'm making a plan to show my band teacher an orchestra remix of Asgore and not tell him that its from a video game, and maybe he'll say yes to playing it for spring concert next year. Its a biiiiiiiig stretch, but i'll try.

*Playing Asgore in band for next years spring concert...fills you with DETERMINATION*

This probably belongs in the metagame thread, but I'll throw in my take. Fast fall up air is great. It leads it to stylish footstool combos from 0-15ish%, but let's be honest, how often are you going to be landing these? FFUair -> up tilt is solid but has no true combos from it to my knowledge. FFUair -> Uair is fantastic as a kill confirm, as it true combos for a surprisingly large percent range. The biggest problem I see with FFUair is landing it in the first place. It is definitely not something you'll be wanting to throw out in neutral, as it is not only very obvious, but it's also very easy to whiff. It requires a good read or a punishable mistake from the opponent to land FFUair. Or-- a setup. I haven't done too much labbing on this, but I've landed FF nair into uair in Speed mode at low percents. Might be DI dependent. Perhaps the back hit of nair would lead into FFUair? I don't have the game in front of me now. Someone do science on this.
Edit: I realize Monado Master Monado Master was referring to first hit up air. I am talking about second hit -> $.

XD. Its cool man. I find this pretty useful, but its very difficult to actually do. I'm sure in time we'll master it.
Also if your near the edge you can go off the edge and hit the second hit as well as the first. Nothing useful, but still.

You can also do this.
And that's pretty neat.
I never thought of jumping up from the edge with Uair first hit only...MOOOOAR TESTING!!!
Also that was really cool. That'll help me get back on stage more often. That possibly one of my main problems in Smash as a whole.

I wouldn't recommend going for that too terribly often, as they will trying to hit you in any way they can. They can just fsmash you at the ledge and you die. You have to read exactly what they're going to do and not get hit by it first and foremost, then you can go for the up air -> back slash.
My advice for getting up off the ledge is to mix up what options you use. If you roll up every time, you will get punished eventually. A lot of midlevel players tend to go for roll or jump, and I often capitalize on a ledge jump with Shulk's up tilt. Attack should not be used frequently from the ledge. It's probably the easiest to punish. Drop down jump fair is pretty good, but if the opponent catches on and they hit you, you won't have a jump and you're screwed. Normal getup is probably the safest option, but even this can be punished. So mix it up.

I do the attack ledge get up like 99% of the time. Whenever I'm off the edge my brain goes from *Think about what your opponents doing mode* to *Autopilot*. Its not my biggest problem in smash (That would be being predictable), but the little things add up. Well. That video makes me wanna do testing on FF Uair with Jump, Speed, and Shield arts now. I got the entire weekend and the only thing I'm goin be doing it making my Unitale fan-made boss fight. Even if this is something that will be rarely used it's still good to now. There have been plenty of times where I'm in a fight and I just have a vision of something I saw like 4 months ago and I do that thing I remembered and then I feel good about my self. Anyway. I'll get to work on the FF Uair with the other arts. I highly doubt i'll do the custom specials. That's...just to much for me.
Edit: Ok. I did some quick testing with the other arts. There's very few differences. The only differences are that FF Uair to Ftilt and Dtilt are true combos with Jump, and that Speed and Shield are garbage with FF Uair.

Hey guys,

I don't know if it's the right thread for this, but I'll try and link to another thread if it's wrong. Since I picked up:4shulk:, I fell in love with the character due to his creativity and many options to boost in neutral and he's so awesome. Because I love this character so much (close to the same level of enjoyment as:4mario:and:4marth:), I wanted to start playing his games to actually know a lot more about the character. So I started playing Xenoblade Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii at a friend's house since I don't own the game and I know that it's incredibly rare and expensive (my friend bought it for 80$). RPG games are not my main type of games, so I didn't know what to do. I played the first 45 minutes of the game and I really liked it so far. I've yet to know characters such as Dunban and Reyn. I'm only at the beginning to where Shulk and Reyn got back to Colony 9. Basically, I have some questions:
1) What is required for 100% completion in Xenoblade Chronicles? How and what should I do?
2) Once I got to Colony or any town, should I do every single side-missions or quest before moving on to the story?
Like I said, I'm not too familiar with the RPG genre, so any help will be appreciated...I'm glad to know Shulk as a character, and I'm definitely excited to play and know more about the game.

EDIT: the first 45 minutes, I spent time destroying all enemies on my way to level up and all that...Kinda confused about the battle mechanics, but got used to it after a little while. Might need to re-adjust later on...

You dont really need to go for 100% completion on your first playthrough, especially if you're not an RPG guy. To do that youd have do every single side mission, which brings me to the second point.

You dont need to do every single side mission. As you complete more, even more are unlocked, and even more are unlocked in places you've been before as you advance in the game. Don't bog yourself down with completing all of them, just do some and the interesting ones. There's definitely some good weapons/etc in many, but you will never find yourself unable to complete the game/extremely disadvantaged or anything of that sort from not doing a certain side quest.

I ask this, because every time I play an adventure type of game, I always go for 100% no matter what. I'm a guy that likes to collect everything on its first try (but I digress. I'll learn to maybe and eventually like RPGs). So I guess I'll try playing regularly with some side quests, since the in-game tells that it's recommendable that I do some side quests in order to have some advantage before proceeding to the main story. Thanks! XD My adventure has just begun with Shulk.

The side quests will continue along with the main story. I only warn you because I initially tried to go for 100% on my first playthrough, and it eventually stressed me a bit until I finally just let some quests go. In case you're not already aware, Xenoblade is a fairly long game. To compare, though I took a bit longer than most, I put 122 hours into the game, even without reaching 100% completion. Just letting you know what you're getting into.

To be honest that is sort of how I operate. Since RPGs are can often be fairly long endeavors, I try to reach 100% completion in all games first try, unless some aspect of the story/missions are locked behind a 2nd playthrough. This does often require me to use a checklist but I manage to remain fairly spoiler-free.

I think I did fairly nice, having done all missions, 99% achievements (2-3 are a bit stupid so yea skipped 'em), best weapons, armour, skills, everything.

It is nice to see people get into Xenoblade or any other game after growing fond of the game's character in Smash.

To answer your questions, 100% completion is fairly possible in the first playthrough but yes it can be a bit tedious. Also depends on your definition of 100% since for me it meant best gear, beat all superbosses, quests and heart to hearts. The in-game achievements usually rack up themselves.

I would suggest you to continue normally while just taking up all the side quests you find. You don't have to complete all quests of a region at once since you can always come back, and many unlock after a set progress in the story.

Since many are generic, kill X, gather X quests, you will find yourself completing some of them normally while exploring and killing stuff along the way. And try to kill the unique monsters you come across, unless they are much more powerful, since they drop good loot and give you affinity coins the first time you kill them.

Since the landmark system exists you can always just teleport back to finish some unfinished quests. It is only at very late game that a number of quests (10-11) become unavailable but these are marked as 'timed'. You shouldn't worry about these yet. All other quests can be completed any time so no worries about them.

I think I didn't give too much info to confuse ya... Hopefully that helped.

It`s fine. That's my way of proceeding through every adventure game I play. Always go for 100% completion no matter what...

Welcome to the Shulkboards buddy. Always nice to see a new face.
Ok. I'd highly HIGHLY suggest not doing a 100% run of Xenoblade on your first or even second playthough. If your in school wait for the summer break as well as 100%ing this game takes a lot of time.
To fully 100% Xenoblade you need to do the following.
1. Beat every Mission.
2. Beat every Unique Monster.
3. Get everyone up to max affinity.
4. Get the whole affinity chart filled.
5. Get every Achievement.
6. Fully upgrade everything that can be upgraded.
I'm sure there many more that I can't think of off the top of my head, but those are some of the things you need to do.
If you want help with this, then check out Chuggaaconroy's 100% playthough of Xenoblade.
www.youtube.com/user/chuggaaconroy
Again. I'd VERY HIGHLY recommend playing though the game a couple times to fully understand everything and also have loads of time to do this. This isn't a game you can put down for a month and play again. You need to be ready for this. If i can find it I'll also send you a guide that a friend of mine on the Shulkboards sent me to help me out on my 100% playthough...which didn't happen yet for varies reasons, but this summer...it's happening.
Anyway I hope I helped.
Also. DO NOT GET SPOILED ON THIS GAME!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! WHEN LOOKING AT GUIDES OR VIDEOS, BE CAREFUL. THIS GAME IS BEST PLAYED BLIND AND NOT KNOWING THE STORY!!!

I would have loved to do that but since I have so many other games I wanna play, I just went with 100% first try.

Although I don't remember there being an index for every unique monster or an achievement attached to killed them all.

A second run through is something I need to do, but probably after I finish XCX 100%. Still need to grind to get those lovely augments to KO every single thing in the game on ground :D

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate it. I was about to watch Chuggaaconry's playthrough, but I think it's better not... I'll try to discover things on my own and just follow my instincts with the game...

Killing every unique monster is somewhat an opinion on 100%ing Xenoblade Chronicles. You get Affinity Tokens for killing them for the first time, so I feel as if you need to get every Token which equals kill every unique. Achievements is like 100%ing an Xbox game for Achievements or a PlayStation game for Trophies. You don't NEED to, but I feel like you do to 100% Xenoblade, or any game with Achievements or a form of Achievements.

Yea it usually depends. I think I got them all. Hopefully.

I just didn't have the patience to get the wiped 100 times, or kill 5000 monsters achievements. Got everything else so 100% in my book. Although it is possible to not being able to '100%' if you go for the monsters and mission completion due to the 1-2 areas which get blocked.

X is a different story since it gives you so much more to do, actually being sorta detached from the main story. End-game goals are basically achievements, super skells and super ground setups.

Damn notifications stopped notifying me...

Anyway, in recent news, I'm too good at this game. "One-hit kill... or something!"

You can also do this.
And that's pretty neat.
This is indeed neat. Just to be sure, that's just a drop-down to uair, right? Maybe it's just Speed, but the drift looks weird.

Welcome to my most favourite game ever :)

I probably wouldn't recommend 100% completion straight away, but don't let me tell you what to do. What you SHOULD know is that certain quests will be unobtainable or impossible to complete once advancing beyond certain parts in the story. These quests will have a timer icon next to them in your Quest List. However, this only happens at two story points (one cut-off is voluntary and you're told about it, the other is after a very significant plot point) and only locks out maybe 5% of the total quests, if that. You should also know that some quests will have multiple endings, usually impacting on the relationships between NPCs and sometimes one or two quests that follow on from the divergent path. Because of that you can't *truly* 100% it, but you can always call it as close as you can :p

So yeah, with the exception of those "Timed Quests", I think just press on and on and on with the plot and come back to questing and exploring as you feel like it.

Yep, and it's easiest to do in Speed because of the low jump height and the increased air speed. More air speed means you travel farther during the active frames of up air 1, effectively increasing it's hitbox.

Ok. This goes with the off the edge Uair into Backslash thing. For some reason I can't drop off the edge and do something as fast as I see other do. Like say I edge trump someone and I try to do a Bair. I can't just let go of the edge and jump then do a Bair. Whoever I'm playing as just sits there for a second then jumps up. What am I doing something wrong?

I think I press down and then jump after ledge trumping. You are in a bit of lag once you grab the ledge, but if you learn the timing of when to press down you can do it pretty darn quick. Also, reverse Air Slash is generally a better option than back air for Shulk, as back air isn't very quick and it doesn't have a lot of vertical range, so it basically requires the opponent to immediately jump after getting trumped. Air Slash is quicker and it has a lot of range.

I tried that, but Shulk or any character in this case just doesn't jump fast enough. And the Shulk Bair off of ledge trump thing was just an example. I meant with characters like Cloud and DK. Oh well. I'm sure i'll get it over time.

That moment when you Spike someone with Falcon's Utilt while turned away from them...I'm posting video that to the Falconboards.

While we're on that sort of subject, I'm headed to Pound in April. It'll be my first major since Smash Con. Hoping to maybe break out of pools this time?
Actually, I'm headed to Pound in April too. I guess we have a better chance of getting Shulk out of pools at a national now with at least two Shulks going instead of one.

So, I was watching one of Esam's streams earlier today and they all was talking about how they thought Cloud was the best Swordsman in the the Smash 4. Compared to all the other Swordsman Cloud has better frame date than them. However, I think either Marth, Meta Knight, and Shulk all have Cloud beat imo and this is coming from a Cloud main.

I don't think Shulk is a bad character I think Shulk is severely underatted and has tons of potential imo.
