I'll be doing a lot of traveling next year and I want to get one or the other. Can you also suggest which are the best games for each so I can compare what I might play with what I know I wouldn't be interested in?

what
either one will pass the time, but since the DS is cheaper, I suggest that.

Get pokemon.

Games for the DS have always interested me more. Games like Phoenix Wright, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Brain Age, and all those other Mario/Metroid/Zelda games all stand out.

Check out Phoenix Wright especially. I've never heard of a person who didn't like these games after playing for half an hour. I just introduced them to my friend. I practically had to kick him out of my house since he didn't have a DS of his own.

Pokemon is, well... pokemon. You could waste hundreds of hours on this game if you know what you're doing. EV training, breeding IVs, natures, movesets, blah blah blah.

Oh, and the DS is more durable which is good since you're going to be traveling.

DS - Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing Wild World, Phoenix Wright, Tetris DS, New Super Mario Bros, Starfox Command, Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Pokemond Diamond/Pearl I would suggest purchasing for the Nintendo DS.

PSP - Loco Roco and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. I don't own a PSP but those are the only two games which seem to interest me.

both are awful; at least you can get better emulation on the PSP so you're traveling with games you already know you like instead of (insert GTA port) or (insert $30 stylus concept demo)

I sold my DS about a month ago and I don't miss it at all. The games are little more than mini-games that were either really short and easy, or just boring. So I didn't get much play out of it.

However, it's all about what you want and would play. With the PS3s recent updates, I'd get my money out of the PSP since they are so closely tied together now. I can access my PS3 from anywhere and I can download PS1 titles to it. But I don't like handhelds that much.

I find the games on the DS are much more fun than games on the PSP.

The PSP does double as a mp3, so if you don't already have a mp3, then you might consider it.

EDIT: Oh, and F8AL has the same taste in DS games as me, basically.

I don't have a DS (I have a SP), I do have a PSP though.

Some games I can recommend would be: Daxter, Death Jr (short but fun), Death Jr II, Metal Gear Acid (Tactics game, REALLY high learning curve, but also REALLY fun once you figure it all out), Metal Gear Acid 2 (ditto), Metal Gear Portable Ops (MGS in your hands, and a really good story), Medievil Resurrection (Plays like the original), Tony Hawk Underground (Tony Hawk in your hands), GTA Liberty City Stories and Marvel Ultimate Alliance (hack 'n slash-ish but you get to play as Deadpool, so who cares!).

You should just check each systems librabry on a site like Gamestop or IGN and see which has more game that you like.

If you're 'picky' about the kind of games you play most game sites have a review section that lets you list games from highest scoring to lowest. This way you cajn look at the top scoring games and see which system is more interesting to you.

Oh God, GET THAT DS. I play my DS more than my Gamecube OR my Wii. Pokemon Diamond is the best Pokemon game to date, MarioKart really is legendary, many handheld RPGs are out there for Nintendo DS and GBA, whic can obv be played by it. Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, are 2 of my favorite handheld RPGs.

GET THAT DS

Really, why base your opinion on a site made for a Nintendo game? If you read most of the topics in this room, they are Nintendo in some way. Your best bet is to go and look at the games for both, decide which ones you'd buy, and go with the system that has the most. No one in here will play your DS/PSP but you, so why should they have a say in what you spend your money on. People tend to just validate their own purchases by getting others to buy it, I'm guilty of it too. But it all comes down to what you find enjoyable.

It's always helpful to know what people say who have experienced something I haven't. I've posted this question on more than just this forum so I'm getting a variety of answers. From what I've gathered, DS seems to be the most popular choice, but PSP would work if it has just a couple games I would really play.

I can see myself playing Mario(Kart), Zelda, and maybe a few others for DS. For PSP, I'd get MLB 07, Tony Hawk, and Twisted Metal immediately. Most of the people I'll be around next year use PSPs and would have similar games, so I would probably be better off going that route and just bringing my Wii along for the console side.

Thanks for all your input; please feel free to add to it.

I have both a DS and PSP. But my DS is pink. Girls and guys flirted with me whenever I played EBA and Jump Ultimate Stars at fanime.

The moral, whatever you get, get it pink.

Oh, and the DS has better games overall IMO, but the PSP has some gems as well.

both DS and psp is mod-able. DS doesn't require soldiering but psp does have megaman...

I have both of them. I have to say that the PSP is the most versatile of the two. But the DS's games much more inovative and fun.

it depends what you want it for. If you want if you want this to pass the time and have some fun on your trip, then get a DS, but if you want something that costs more, has fewer good games, and isn't actually meant to be used as a gaming system, than the PSP. Clearly I have a vendetta against sony gaming right now because they don't focus on the gaming aspect of their system. They just throw in a bunch of crap that has nothing to do with video games, that you really probably don't need if you're buying a handheld anyways.

pretty much get PSP if you want trash that focus's only on the graphics and random crap thrown in, but get a DS if you'd rather have something that will entertain you, and you will enjoy. Plus it's cheaper, and I believe games are as well, could be wrong though...

o yea, don't expect to many PSP answers on here, in fact I'm surprised at the amount already. We are pretty devoted to nintendo...

Well, the simple fact that they're releasing at least 2 Final Fantasy games, and possibly a Zone of the Enders game for the PSP makes it worth buying....

And Advent Children... that's always good too.

PSP - Internet on the go, MP3 player.

DS - Better Games.

For me that's a tie, but If you want 1 for video games get DS,
or
if you want portable entertainment when video games get boring get PSP.

I think DS is the better purchase because

1. It's cheaper
2. There are better and more interesting games

PSP is just like playing PS2 games on a handheld. At least the DS has a different feel and experience than a console. Plus the games are unique. Get both of the Castlevania games if you are getting a DS.

After playing new Super mario bros, elite beat agents, and mario kart, nothing on DS really really intrests me. Since you told us nothing about what actul games you like Ill go by your avatar and say you like zelda. if you really really like zelda I whould get ds. But like i was saying im getting really bored of my ds and the PSP looks like it is going to have a very strong year. just one thing: Wait for the PSP re-design if you plan on purchasing. Not only is it an amazing re-design (On par to GBA->GBA SP) but it's going to have some bonus stuff (internal memory *****es!)

EDIT: Oh yeah if you think wii graphics are good buy a PSP (stealth troll LOL)

I'll use it on the bus while traveling with the team. Most of the other guys have PSPs it seems, and I'm sure MLB 07 is a hit. That's the one game I'd for sure get for the PSP. And Twisted Metal.

I'm interested to know the timeline Crimson King asked for - when will the new PSP be on the market?

Hm... I may be waiting until Christmas to grab a PSP then.

All that stuff for UNDER $170? Not too bad and right in time for the games I want for it...
God ****it...

I read of kotaku and they are trusted. Just wait till e3 and it will probabley be announced there. It;s gonna have an LED screen (resulting in longer battery life) better buttong (like ps3 controller) internal memory and faster UMD slot so it loads faster. Also they want to make it smaller so im pretty sure I read that they are doing something kinda like sidekick where the buttons slide out underneath the screen.

Funny thing is after I posted that last thing some kid asked me to trade my DS for his ver 1.50 PSP. Can't wait to get home with it. =)

And also if you wait for the new PSP it may be more expensive, and there is no way in hell you will be able to run homebrew on it. Sony's gonna ship it with 3.00 and you will never be able to get to the dreamy 1.50 version.

EDIT: whoops did not read commonyoshi's post.

I personally find the DS much more valuable, yet the PSP is pretty good as well.

For good DS games, I have thoroughly enjoyed Meteos and Pokemon. Most of the Mario games are good as well. I also liked the Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow a lot. There are other good choices of course too :)

for PSP, the only game i've loved is Lumines, though I'm SURE that the Metal Gear Port Ops is probably amazing and some other ones too.

I recently bought a PSP and fairly happy with it. I got Ratchet and Clank, Daxter, and Fireteam Bravo 2. Ratchet and Clank and Daxter by the way are really short.

Sorry for this but DS seems like a kiddy console. 85% of the time I see someone with a DS he or she is under 12. And I checked wikipedia and PSP's best seller Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories, DS's- Nintendogs. So with that said PSP is for more serious gamers. And the DS is for kiddier games

So overall
PSP Pros-For more serious gamers and there are really some great games out there. And graphics to me seem better.
Cons-Battery life is really short! It is about five hours, so if you're going for a long car ride bring a car charger(whatever it's called). And the games I have played are really short but do have some replay value.

DS
Pros-Games seem like they're made for fun not and gaming.

Cons- No games for serious gamers.
