So I decided that I wanted to make an interesting character support thread while I had the chance. But I wanted to think outside of the box and choose a character that many don't consider, even if the character itself has a miniscule chance of being playable in Smash (if there is any chance at all). And after a little bit of research and consideration, I've chosen Marina, the robotic maid from the Nintendo 64 game Mischief Makers.
"I'm sorry, what is she from again?"
Marina's game, Mischief Makers, is a 2.5D platformer on the N64. It was developed by the independent companu behind Gunstar Heroes and Sin & Punishment, Treasure, and published by Nintendo (in America and Europe) and Enix- a company that would soon merge with Squaresoft (in Japan). It was visually unique from the other games in the N64 lineup, but it suffered from mixed-to-average reviews and is now largely an obscure title.
"What would make Marina a good character?"
Gameplay wise, the character can run, jump, and boost (using a jetpack). I personally see her as a grappler type character, but she could easily be given rudimentary stuff like punches for smash attacks. Marina strikes me as a mixture of R.O.B. and Mega Man with a dash of originality thrown in for good measure.
"Does she even have a chance?"
That depends on the state of the developer Treasure and the answer to the question of who even has the rights to the character. A while ago, Treasure was rumored to be done making games... but I'm an optimistic guy. I think Nintendo, who sought after Bayonetta 2 themselves, may have been able to seek after Treasure for a new Sin & Punishment or a new Mischief Makers or something- I mean, they wouldn't need to, but any exclusives would help the Switch rather than harm it at this point. I feel like Marina's playabke inclusion would depend on whether or not Nintendo and Treasure got together, got an a-ok from Square Enix, and miraculously decided to develop a new Mischief Makers game, or at least remaster the N64 one from scratch.
"Why do you want Marina in Smash?"
Well, there aren't any characters with green hair in Super Smash Bros at the moment. And it'd be fun to hear Marina say "Shake, Shake!" everytime she grabs an opponent. Plus, it also helps that she'd likely be a well-rounded, fun character to play as. I'm well aware that Marina's chance is fairly nonexistant at the moment, but I still think it's fun to dream a little.
"Aren't there better characters to represent the N64 era?!"
Well, this is subjective. But I must say that if Nintendo does choose to put in a character for the sole purpose of representing the Nintendo 64 era, Marina really does have some competition. Maybe Goemon or a Pitotwings 64 character or Adeline from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards or Todd Snap or even Banjo & Kazooie all have an outside chance at stealing her thunder. Of course, we've learned in previous speculative eras that era-representation isn't necessarily the biggest priority Nintendo and Sakurai have when putting together the rosters.
Well, that's all I got. I'll create a list of supporters if people do want to support this character. And hey, we'll see what Nintendo decides to do with the forgetten gem of an IP this time around.
