Now I haven't been the most dedicated of players to the single character Marth, but I think it's for the better. As we all know Brawl's a game of decisions with bans/counterpicks, that's why all these ridiculously oversimplified threads about stage/character counters are springing up around.
In all these discussions and differences of opinion, I think there's something good to try out though. Maining Marth is fun, yes, we can take G&W and hold our own against D3 somewhat, and we certainly aren't going to do any better switching to another character to fight MetaKnight, but if we are to choose a secondary and stick with it I just want to offer my opinion on the best choice.
ROB.
Now this is my opinion for two reasons. One, ROB reminds us the power of a defensive game when in power with projectiles, and two, he is a great match in terms of counterpicking.
For one he goes even with Marth, as both the Boards of Marth and ROB players have concurred somewhat. Second of all, he has pretty much the same spacing and utilization of fair (the favorite zoning technique of both characters). Third of all, he isn't scared of the edge, and nor should he be.
Now I have no clue why I felt the urge to post this up, but I really wanted to make a thread that got responses and seemed to make a difference. This feels odd as an overopinionated stance on a subject which has its overly diverse range of opinions, but I feel it stands strong given the high tier counterpicks it gives heed to.
D3 is a smaller problem with ROB, according to the boards and in my opinion as well. Game and Watch, ROB's key issue, is also eliminated pretty well by Marth's control. So that eliminates the west/east coast general populous favorites, save for the other god tiers.
Snake is a problem with Marth, and he's unique in his weight and projectile use, and sure this is a great matchup to practice against, but for what? His weight and abilities are completely different from the rest of the cast, so why practice a matchup with Marth V Snake when you can simply outcamp him and beast around the fair love with ROB?
Metaknight...well there's no cure other than knowing your main or resorting to him, but in my opinion this duo is a great thing to try out.
So if anyone hasn't attempted already, and I'm sure there is at least one person out there that will be cured of his matchup coagulating attempts by this random posting, try out the Marth/ROB.
And if you do, here's my findings on the duo:
