In the sense that his Niche in Melee was occupied by someone else in Brawl, he was "replaced."

They occupy the same conceptual niche on a smash bros roster, so a good way to put how I view it, would be Sakurai saying, "Forgo Mewtwo, his role in melee can be filled by Lucario in Brawl. It'd be nice to have both, but we simply don't have the time."

In that sense, it's a replacement.



"Lucario fills the role enough, we no longer need Mewtwo, let's save time."

No, that is not a replacement! That is Mewtwo simply not making the cut because he wasn't as far in development as they wanted him to be! Just because they fill the same role and one of them is cut does not mean that he was replaced by the other character. A "replacement" is a character who was immediately taken out of a game and then, in that character's place, a new character would take that spot. Young Link was replaced. Pichu was replaced. Both of them were taken out immediately after Melee and they added other characters in their place.

Mewtwo was not "immediately taken out", he has data on there. Whether he has .01%-99.9% of data on there, he was NOT replaced. He was planned, and simply did not make the cut. The fact alone that him and Lucario were going to be in the game together, which I know you know, is evidence that he was not replaced.

See here is the thing, you're comparing 2 completely different characters. This isn't a matter of Plusle VS Minun. They were BOTH planned and one (who actually had the most data of the forbidden 7) simply didn't make it in. If Lucario hadn't been in Mewtwo would have made it, but guess what: Same applies for Pokemon Trainer. I guess he replaced Mewtwo because they are both Gen 1 Pokemon. Since we are making such minor comparisons to characters.

Bi-pedal semi-"magical" high-intelligence talking movie-pokemon with a general physical-"magical" fighting style mix and fills the role of a "pokemon that seems like it could be a stand-alone character in an entirely different franchise because it's not as animalistic as Pikachu, Jigglypuff, or Bidoof."
I'd argue they're approximately the same concept.

I agree that Lucario was in fact inspired by Mewtwo. But that has nothing to do with him replacing anybody. We might as well say ROB replaced Mewtwo.

First thing I'm gonna ask for is a citation for Mewtwo "just barely missing the time slot."

He didn't JUST miss it, but he had the most data. My theory is that even if we didn't add Jigglypuff we still wouldn't have time for Mewtwo, so it probably had nothing to do with who can fill the void. He did kind of filled the void in my opinion, but according to everyone else....
