Year of Luigi.

He was also revealed before the game has been released, and the only unlockables who have been revealed early are the third-parties.

And, uh, you were way more expressive than you should've been.

On the bright side, I think we can safely assume that we'll get at least one character every month. I guess a portion of it might be connected to another game, but at the same time another batch wouldn't by virtue of the franchises presented. September might be a newcomer or a veteran character that is not connected to anything released that month if that is indeed the case.

While you raise some sensible points, looking for patterns is only going to cause trouble. There are very few consistencies Sakurai adheres to in Smash, so just because something happened in a previous game doesn't mean it will work the same way in the future. For now it's best to not make an assumption either way on Luigi.

Yeah, I think he may still be unlockable, I'm just explaining why some people assume he will be a starter this time.

Semi-clone, actually.

He's sorta the counterpart to Mario and all, so it does make sense for him to share some moves, but Luigi still has enough personality to differentiate himself from his brother.

Is it such a huge deal if Luigi is or is not a starter? He's LUIGI anyway, one of the first characters unlocked ALWAYS.

So I join in on the speculation... WHEN is the next Nintendo game reveal?

Also consider release dates for past IPs, like... for example...
Punch Out came out on a February (arcade), October-November (NES), May-July (Wii) ... therefore that ship either already sailed, or we could get Little Mac reveal on October-November... November more likely if Sonic Lost Worlds is released on October.

Well to be blunt, Luigi is one of the rare cases where it makes sense that a character would similar to another character. He was originally nothing more then a mere palette swap of Mario, and even after gaining his own characteristics he's still very similar to Mario. Naturally, this gets translated into games like Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo would never release a peripheral as limited and frankly useless in this day and age on a system that's struggling to even sell itself. A new ROB, even with his appearance in Smash, isn't going to move units. Nintendo isn't trying to sell an "Entertainment System" anymore, they're selling a video game console. This rumor is nonsense, don't even give it a second thought.

So is it possible that around the release of a new game, we'll see a character announced? It may be too early to see a trend, but surely it's a little something to work off of for right now.

So let's say this is a monthly trend. Not every time a new game is coming. Who do we think we'll see?

I think if there isn't a notable game coming out at a certain time in the month, we'll get a newcomer. Call it a hunch, but if this trend turns out to be continued, I'm thinking Diddy Kong for Tropical Freeze at least at this point, and probably Peach with the new Mario game.

The Dojo's Luigi page references Dream Team, so I do think it's a fair guess to think that veterans are showing up with game releases.

So something in September, Pokemon in October and Diddy and Peach some other time this year.

Would honestly not mind starter Luigi because I'd hope it'd allow for more unlockable newcomers.

I know it will be. I was getting impatient yesterday and was really hoping for something today. Luckily I got it. As much as I comment about how I expect a character, it's just that I really want to see something new and get excited for the game. Smash is my favorite game after all.

Maybe I just read this in the wrong context... but who's to say Ness is an unlockable? He certainly wasn't in Melee. Considering the enduring popularity of Earthbound over Mother 3, it could well be that the Mother characters get their roles swapped around and Lucas is the unlockable one this time around. Too early to say, amirite?

There was Captain Falcon and Ness in Melee, but I'm not sure if it was because they were better known after their first SSB appearance, and they became unlockable again in Brawl.
