I'm still saying Lucario will be cut just as I had said way back 80 pages ago. I guessed that Sakurai picked Pokemon based off of movies and the show, and I was right based off of the recent interview he gave about character selection. He finds the ones that will be coming out around release time, the ones that Pokemon Company thinks will be big around that time. Based off of pre-release anticipation of them being popular. Mewtwo & Pichu came and went, Lucario's next. Lucky for us Mewtwo is relevant again, therefore I think he'll be back as the new current gen rep for Pokemon. Thoughts anyone?

Pichu went because he was literally a joke character, and was extremely unpopular. (Biggest waste of a slot in my opinion.) and Mewtwo nearly came back. The priority may have been more in favor of recency, but the work was still put in to a degree.

Given how much more connected Sakurai is to the fanbase, and how popular Lucario still is, I only see cause being made to add Mewtwo and not remove anyone. Lucario's just going to be more popular for Smash 5 if he's taken out. It doesn't make any sense, especially when it's so easy to just take away Shadow Ball from Mewtwo (Or don't) and still have the two characters be entirely unique from one another.

Why cut Lucario? He's still very popular, and is in fact still the mascot of Pokemon Smash. Besides, like Sakurai said, he's not aiming to have any cuts. Only if he absolutely has to, and in those cases I think characters like T. Link are more at risk than someone so unique as Lucario.

I wouldn't go so far to say Lucario is the Pokemon rep of Smash. Come on now, not Pikachu? Seriously? Even Jiggs is a bigger Smash mascot for Pokemon.

Plus Lucario's uniqueness as a character can be debated anyway. Pokemon seems to be the series that usually has a cut for a fresh new character in each entry of Smash. Pichu was a joke yes, but its one of the mascots of gen 2. A recognizable character from that place in time.

With each game? its happened once lol.

I understand that, which is why I'm saying this is just a thought. If there are no Poke-cuts, there ya go. I'm wrong. If yes, well then there's a pattern following what I suggested. I think Jiggs would've been cut had Melee not come out so soon after the 1st, plus her being relevant to the show still at that point.

well here's my thing on Lucario. people wanted Lucario for Brawl. he was requested because he was popular to Pokemon in general. Did the movie help that? No doubt. without question that totally assisted in making him popular. The real question is, Are there any Pokemon from B/W who are a suitable replacement?imo not really. there are plenty of feasible Pokemon sure but none were nearly as popular. Zoroark is probably the best bet but i just dont see it happening personally. While still a relatively popular pokemon, probably one of the most well recieved of his gen, easily usurped by Lucario. and hell they even used Lucario to advertise B2/W2 and Lucario's still seen in the anime quite regularly. so its not as if he became less relevant as far as 5th gen is concerned. meanwhile Mewtwo is generally agreed upon to be the best choice as a rep for gen 6 and its not like adding Mewtwo means Lucario cant stay. if the question is that Pokemon can only have 4 slots, then sure Lucario can probably go in exchange for Mewtwo. but because Pokemon is such a huge series that has literally hundreds of viable candidates with the only real "Essential" character being Pikachu it would be understandable if they had more playable characters than other series.

Wait, what? No, no, not Smash Bros., Pokemon Smash. This

Despite the Bulbapedia page saying Gen 4 Pokemon stopped being showed, Lucario is still around. See here:

It's essentially how the general Japanese populace learn about Pokemon updates if they don't read Corocoro.

And I'm not sure how debatable uniqueness is when Lucario shares at most two moves with Mewtwo, and has a very specific character mechanic that Mewtwo did not have. And I'd say the logic that a new character gets cut every game is null and void because Jigglypuff was in Melee.

In addition, three gen 3 reps were added in Brawl as well as Lucario, so recency clearly isn't everything with Pokemon.

Let's not pretend that Sakurai is going to say "oh, 4 is too much for Donkey Kong, it's overrepresenting". Sakurai doesn't really care about over-representing franchise according to what most think. Donkey Kong can easily justify four characters; not because it's on the same level as Mario, Zelda or Pokémon in sales but because Donkey Kong has the characters worthy of a spot and King K. Rool and Dixie Kong both have great résumé to share that will put them high on the consideration list.
I've had a theory for some time but nothing I've actually researched on. The 3DS has 2.0 flash memory while the Wii U has 32. That is a big leap. That being said, it's in obvious the 3DS will limit the Wii U in some aspects. As well, Sakurai had gone on to say that both versions will share the same roster library. This is why many people are claiming that the roster will be forty or less in size due to this limitation. However, I have a theory where the roster can still be 40-50 in both versions.

SSBB was full of additional content. It had a horde of stickers, trophies, music, items, the stage builder, the failed SSE, event matches, and even the classical demos. While all if those were fun, it did little to add to the actual gameplay. I feel that in SSB4, gameplay and characters are receiving a large focus. So here is what I am getting at:

In order to conserve space in order to create a large yet diverse roster, Sakurai and his team forgoes adding a large amount of content for the 3DS version and focuses more on customizable content while the Wii U is the more traditional Smash experience? That is to say that additional content is minimalized in order to conserve space in both the 3DS and Wii U?

It might be a pipedream but it is something that I find realistically happening. I'm trying to find the interview where Sakurai commented the differences between the two versions, both having the same roster but different stages. Is it unrealistic to suggest that additional content in both versions will be different? The 3DS having less trophies, stickers, music, and such? How many people will be disappointed that we didnt get 100+ songs in both versions as opposed to Ike, Lucario, Lucas, Toon Link, etc being cut? Would people prefer a downsize in content but a 40+ roster size?

I am also trying to figure out how much total space the Brawl roster took and compare that to the 3DS memory. In my opinion, by finding out how much memory the content in SSBB, we can guesstimate how much will be needed in the 3DS ( if that makes any sense). Obviously, cutting a few trophies does mean it will free up the roster but a possible decrease in overall additional content may allow a few spots on the roster to open up. Like I said, I'm unsure as to how much memory stages, trophies, or characters takes up so this is all a untested theory.

Suggestions?
Limiting the roster honestly depends on expectations here. If you were expecting late forties or even early fifties (including transformation here), then you should be fine as Sakurai has said that he's trying to include as many characters as possible as well as avoid cuts (or failing so, make them minimal, possibly trying to get them in via DLC as well). Those expecting late fifties or more, however, should prepare for disappointment. But then again, late fifties was never realistic. The issue with the 3DS has more to do with issues surrounding duo characters and transformation characters anyway. I'm honestly more worried about what will happen to the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon than Lucario since I could see Ivysaur and Squirtle lose their spots due to Sakurai being unable to keep the Pokémon Trainer together (hope) whereas I don't see Lucario going at all barring time constraints.

Really sad to see how wasteful Brawl was. The game could have almost fit into a single disc layer if it weren't for the horrendous job at compression. SSE also took up most of the development time and as such, most of the space as well. Sakurai not doing a SSE-like mode again gives me hope that we won't see such wasteful resource again. Hopefully, the story will be more like a glorified story mode.

People say that the Brawl's roster took up 2 GB, although since there isn't a source, I can't confirm that. Would be nice if we did get them, though.
No, DKC is going a direction where it's wants go different rather than the same ol Kremlings. I don't think at the time being, K. Rool is not necessary at the moment.
Pay attention to your wording. This makes you sound like you think K. Rool is necessary when you're implying the opposite.

Also, recentness doesn't matter at all for recurring franchise. What matters is importance to the franchise and if he meets all four criteria. King K. Rool obvious fulfills this.

And you can't honestly say that King K. Rool is in a worse position than Mega Man was. After Mega Man's inclusion, recent is a word that should never be used when discussing recurring franchise characters again.
That's another wrinkle to the whole Tropical Freeze discussion...Dixie is suddenly a lock because of ten seconds of trailer footage, but how quickly does the backpedaling occur if the Viking K. Rool scenario plays out? Not that it's all that probable, but it's a pleasant hypothetical scenario.
That'd be hilarious to see, although it'd less of a backpeddling and would be more of a "King K. Rool and Dixie Kong should co-exist!" scenario, which is what should be the case in the first place.
As far as Namco goes, anyone else find it strange that they weren't included down at the bottom with Capcom, Sora, and Nintendo?

Something is fishy here.
Yeah I find it weird as well, but not because of character-related things.
Is there really a need to be so rude? Is it so wrong for me to be wondering about something? I'm not quite understanding the hostility. I didn't even give the idea that that was why Namco was there in the first place.

Onto a different topic, I am definitely thinking we will see at least 45 characters in SSB4, give or take one or two. It just seems like a solid number overall. Not too many, but not too little. What do you guys think?
I'd be a little surprised if we get less than fifty characters for this game (transformation included) when all said and done. With Sakurai trying to include as many characters as possible for this game along with there likely being minimal if any cutting (and no indication that the 3DS will limit the roster), I think they'll end up exceeding pessimistic expectations. Strangely enough, though, I can't think of fifty who I feel are likely, but then again, as Wii Fit Trainer and Villager showed (and I guess Mega Man), not every addition will be likely.
[collapse=hypothetical future thing]Something to remember about the WiiU/3DS leaks and future SSB5 leaks...

First it's probably good to recap all the way back to the dismay when both melee leaked and brawl leaked. Summaries of those leaks can be found here:
http://www.smashboards.com/threads/...brawl-roster-does-get-leaked-on-topic.134204/
http://www.smashboards.com/threads/chronobounds-thoughts-on-the-brawl-roster-very-long-read.139579/

Now that Smash 5 is on the way and roster predictions are flying around with people arguing who's definitely in and who has absolutely zero chance, it's probably a good idea to look back on when the roster for WiiU/3DS leaked. The first leaks for the WiiU/3DS games came right before the trailers shown at E3. However, even then it wasn't the leak that got people most upset.

Nearly immediately after the trailers confirming Villager and Mega Man were out, all of the hype involving the characters was cut short with the reveal of Wii Fit Trainer. Instantly there was outrage. Many convinced themselves that she was just an assist trophy when she was first seen, but the trailer confirmed that she would indeed be playable. Thankfully her announcement was early when the roster only had a few characters confirmed. People had time to get used to her, as there were only Villager and Mega Man as newcomers other than her. This allowed for people to really look at her, and she felt at home rather quick. Some convinced themselves that her inclusion meant that there would be an abundance of characters and that cuts wouldn't be something to worry about.

However, the reveal of these three newcomers happened to reveal a possible leak. This leak involved a prediction confirming those three characters alongside Mii, Pac-Man, and Little Mac. Some clung to the rumours, but without the other three newcomers being revealed at E3 as the prediction stated, it quickly became the majority opinion to dismiss the leak. There was a lot of distaste of the Mii; after all Villager was already confirmed and certainly the two wouldn't be too different; humanoid characters using various items as moves. Many were also convinced that Pac-Man would not make the cut due to a comment of Sakurai's involving Mega Man being a special case as well as Namco characters not getting 'special treatment'.

Other controversial comments revolved around when Sakurai mentioned that there might not be enough time for all smash veterans to return and that the focus would be on unique movesets. Instantly many began to predict their cuts and it was always the 'clones' who were targeted. Any character that could vaguely be considered a clone was targeted: Toon Link, Ike, Wolf, Falco, Lucario (it was heavily assumed that Mewtwo would return thus rendering him a clone), Lucas, and even Ganondorf were on the chopping block for some. However others adopted the theory that instead cuts were not confirmed yet and that the comments referred to characters such as Roy, Dr. Mario, Pichu, and Young Link not being able to come back.

Fast forward to the week before the first character was revealed on the new SmashBros website. A random poster said that Yoshi would be revealed in the next week, and that Ridley was not in the game, that there were a whopping three Links, and that one of the original 12 would be cut. The SmashBros website had not been regularly updating at the time, with Sakurai only posting pictures without any new information. Needless to say once Yoshi was revealed on the site a week later as promised, the fire had been lit. Instantly people were postulating who would be cut out of Luigi, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, and Ness. The big debate was between Ness and Jigglypuff. Others took it as nothing more than a lucky guess, the thought that there would be three Links seemed inconceivable to many: Toon Link was more likely to be cut than there be three Links! And Ridley deconfirmed already? The heartbreak from Brawl was already too much for people to handle. Along with the other leak, which remained unpopular, this was not shaping up to be the roster players had been hoping for, similar to the case of Melee and Brawl.

Eventually, the roster did leak, albeit without any prophecies to back itself up with as with the prior two leaks. A picture of the cast written out in Japanese began to float around the internet. The roster coincided with the first two leaks. It was another leak that was easy to dismiss: No new Fire Emblem rep? No new rep for Kid Icarus? These series were practically guaranteed to get a newcomer! Falco of all characters getting cut; while Wolf stayed even? Not to mention the lack of retro characters; which Sakurai had been on record mentioning he'd like to include more of them. Similar to how many would not believe Brawl's roster due to lack of females when Sakurai had said he was interested in more female characters; the same trope was found in regards to retro characters. Instead others clung with a more popular roster with characters such as Takamaru, Mach Rider, Dillon, Isaac, and Ridley.

Time would begin to prove the demon roster true however. Screenshots began to surface of the character select screen and a low quality gameplay video of two Miis in battle helped to drive the point home. Many still refused to believe it, but once their hands were on the game all of their worst fears were confirmed. People kicked and screamed and cursed Sakurai's name for giving yet another disappointing roster to them. Still, others gave the roster a chance. Those who played were delighted to see their thoughts of Fox/Wolf, Link/Toon Link/Young Link, Bowser/Bowser Jr., Mewtwo/Lucario, Ness/Lucas, etc... being clones were incorrect. While many were upset that someone with as an original moveset as Jigglypuff could be cut over clones, they found our that the closest to a clone there was in the game was between Mario and Luigi. Sakurai's comments about building from scratch were true, with all characters having surprisingly unique movesets and very diverse playstyles. Eventually players got used to the new roster, and many began to love it; including the Mii which as we all know has been at the top of the tier list since the first release.

[/collapse]
So in other words, you decided to parody ChronoBound here?

Well there is a reason why ChronoBound is so influential.

But mascot status was not why Pichu got in. Pichu was added as a joke character when all was said and done.

Also, cuts have only happened once. That doesn't mean Lucario will get axed.

The priority may have been more in favor of recency, but the work was still put in to a degree.
If you look at character placement it was most likely Jigglypuff who stole the spot from Mewtwo not Lucario. Ultimately it probably came down to veteran status and who added more to Brawl's gameplay with their moveset.

It's essentially how the general Japanese populace learn about Pokemon updates if they don't read Corocoro.
That show is crazy. I remember watching it live when Mewtwo's Awakened form was first confirmed. Can actually find old episodes on Youtube if you look.

Anyway I don't see the big deal about Lucario, seems more like nervousness over Mewtwo having been cut more than anything.

I am probably wrong on this but I believe it just might be for legality issues. Once specific characters from a particular company are displayed on the page they'll add the licensing/ ownership things at the bottom, so if Marth character appeared we might see Intelligent Systems, or if Pac-Man appeared we would see Namco Bandai.

Edit: Unless you meant being next to Nintendo/ Hal Laboratory above the copyrights for the characters then I have not a clue.

Let's be honest, the problem with Mewtwo that made him eligible to cut after Melee was not the fact that he was "Mewtwo" but rather the fact he had a broken and weak moveset. A lot of people didn't like to play as him in Melee because of his bad movset.

I like the addition of Matthew over Issac. My roster has that too.

1. You have 2 FE characters from the same installment. If you have Robin you might as well not have Chrom. Or better yet Chrom & Ike.
2. What reason could you have for Toon Ganondorf? What's wrong with Normal Ganondorf unless it's an excuse to declone him
3. If Snake get's replaced by a Third-Party rep I think it should be Bomberman. But, that's just my opinion.
4. Who is Isa? I think you should replace Isa with K. Rool
1. Since Awakening is the recent Fire Emblem, and a very popular one, I thought that 2 characters could work. Robin would bring in magic while Chrom can bring in bows (and possibly lances). You know, alongside their swords.
2. I did that to give Toon Link a villain because I made Ghirahim the Link and Zelda villain. This could also help give him a new moveset.
3. I could see Bomberman too, as well as Simon Belmont.
4. Isa Jo is from Sin & Punishment Star Successor. I wanted to rep it because it has general popularity and was localized last gen. Dixie is the next DK character, being partnered with Diddy.

I think he just ran out of time.. I really dont think there was a priority issue except for the fact he finished lucario first.

I disagree. The whole priority hierarchy thing was planned out with the roster. Although I don't agree with Mewtwo being cut, Sakurai planned the roster like that for a reason.

I literally think the priority issue might have been including the new pokemon vs. old, trying to add the old last but ran out of time. (Not including the original 12 they will always be there).

Well the reason Mewtwo had lower priority that got him cut was his weak moveset. People didn't like it. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a re-vampled moveset.

Why Mewtwo was such a low priority was never explained. Might of had to due with promotional reasoning, other characters simply having that stronger desire for inclusion, or other characters like Jigglypuff being easier to implement.

I guess Mewtwo was a pretty low priority after they decided to do Pokemon Trainer. They essentially developed 3 Pokemon. Lucario was already pretty similar to Mewtwo in terms of circumstances. I mean being the movie physic Pokemon with shadow ball. Most people associate the two anyways. So I doubt Sakurai wanted to put too much more time and effort into Pokemon. The series already got a lot of fanservice. A returning stage that is extremely similar to a new stage. Their own dedicated items (Pokeballs). They have a crap ton of trophies.

I also think that the "Jigglypuff is easier to develop than Mewtwo" theory is pretty accurate. Jigglypuff is also one of the original characters. So I think it was honestly a combination of circumstances. I don't think any one given thing was the reason for his low priority.

Having re-evaluated a few things, here's a more villain heavy roster of 43 / 47.

I managed to format it in a manner that would bring back the ? boxes on the sides and bottom of the selection screen.

The only wild guesses are The Prince of Sable and arguably Shulk though he's pretty popular.

I specifically put Shulk next to Chrom and Marth because I could see Shulk take up Ike's role as a heavy sword user. Though Chrom will most likey take some of Ike's special moves he's not suited to be the heavy sword user Ike was.

The only cuts from Brawl are Lucario who would pass some worth while moves to MewTwo, Toon Link and Snake who might pass the explosives to a revised Wolf.

The red boxes are of course the locked character slots.

To go against that "leak" I dropped the Mii and Pac-Man but they could be added back in for 45 / 49.

Overall while I still very much want Sami as a Advance Wars rep, I'd be very content with this despite not being a large increase of characters. All the existing franchises are adquately represented in this one and the focus stays on being able to play as Nintendo's most iconic all-stars with just a few "out of left field" characters the way Smash Bros. generally feels to me.

Nah, if I were going to add more they wouldn't be from Pokemon or Zelda. Not that I'd complain if Ike and Lucario came back. I probably wouldn't even complain if they added Toon Link to that but I'm not exactly rooting for any of them though Ike is one of my mains in Brawl.

I adore Fire Emblem but 2 reps is probably all it is going to get even at the cost of Ike. I've come to terms with this now.

I appreciate you not asking me to bring in Takamaru, because at this point I just have no motivation at all to bother with him.

Mewtwo was the "hot" Pokemon at the time of Melee, when the time of Brawl came, Lucario came to be the "hot" Pokemon. Now it's possibly between Zoroark and Mewtwo when clearly both have the potential to be unique fighters. I'm probably not too sure, but this could mean the same thing for FE reps, Marth is the face of the series while the other FE is the "current, hot" warrior.

You never know. Fire Emblem has been picking up. Awakening did really well; however, Ike is pretty popular and Marth isn't going any where. I think there are good chances of having a third rep. Imagine how hype it would be if Roy returned? Lyn and Lucina are also great female reps. I guess my point is that we might actually get a third rep this time around. I would honestly be surprised if we didn't. I am not even a fan of Fire Emblem either. ;)

Well I would hope so. Though I'd like Roy back or Lyn most for a 3rd rep after Marth and Chrom. That or a hooded Avatar from Awakening who can use a sword and magic. Again, I have no problem with Ike returning but I can't hardly imagine this game not including Chrom with the success of Awakening but Lucina would make for an easy clone.

I have no qualms with FE being rep'd by 3 blue haired swordsman one light on his feet, the other heavy hitting and the last (Chrom) somewhere between the two but having someone who isn't a blue haired male would help for variety sake.

Also thanks for the props Gingerbread Man, I'm honestly surprised I was able to keep it roster total as small as I did. Usually I find it too hard to limit much less than 50 slots.

As far as Fire Emblem goes, I really think the only two likely reps are Roy and Chrom. When talking about characters for Smash Bros., we have to take into account what the character would bring to Smash.

Unfortunately for Lucina, while she may look slightly different from Marth, she is till too similar visual wise. Not to mention, while I agree the roster could use more females, it shouldn't be a big criteria to get any character in the game.

Lyn and Roy would stand out in this respect. However, while recency may not matter (in certain cases) it honestly in my opinion wouldn't make much sense to include them without Chrom. This would be because Arena Ferox is a confirmed stage in the 3DS version. (I probably come across as biased because I would prefer Chrom. So take this with a grain of salt. This is strictly my opinion).

It would kind of be like Sakurai including Kiddy Kong over Dixie Kong, even with the new DKCR coming out. That wouldn't make sense really. Recency isn't a deciding factor, maybe, but it definitely is there.

I think 2 Characters from the same FE is excessive and other ones should be given a chance

and having Toon Ganondorf because of Giriham is a long shot. That sounds more like an idea than a prediction, and I'd be pretty dang surprised if that happened as you foresaw. You'd be like THE smash speculator to correctly guess something so unlikely and weird like that.

I'd be upset if Isa got in over Saki. (Mostly because she is a girl and cooler.) But, he is more recent and there are only 2 installments so it makes sense.

Maybe. But she is basically in the category of "random Fire Emblem character" as far as Smash goes. I know she's a favorite of the IS staff, but that doesn't change the fact that she is a recruited member, who you can even opt to not have on your team. It wouldn't make much sense to have her if we're talking Nintendo All Stars.

However, Volbound, I know you were trolling. So :troll:

Well, Sakurai said characters must bring something new, so Tharja is a good choice because she would bring a token fanservice character to the series. :troll:
