I still don't really understand why people think recency is automatically a bad thing.

So the character is new? Why is that bad? Smash Bros needs to celebrate the old and the new, so don't be surprised if we get Chrom, Shulk, etc...

Another thing that I will say again, is that I really do not see the appeal to adding Starfy. He's a starfish. People who are not hardcore Nintendo gamers are going to look at that reveal and say, 'Lol wut". It would be in my opinion a waste of a spot. I just don't see how Starfy would make people want to play the game.

I'm not hostile. I'm just expressing my opinion.

Always thought Starfy would've been a cute Japan-only addition in the pre-Brawl times. Now, I don't really support him. Though another, new cutesy character would also be interessting. Starfy does have moveset potential however. And an ultra lightweight, maybe even joke character would be an unique addition. Plus, Starfy has had quite aome games... Honestly, I expect him to make the roster one day at least.

My only issue with your argument Diddy, is that basically every character brought up on the boards has moveset potential. So when people tell me that, it doesn't make me think of them any differently.

I don't think anyone can deny that what Starfy lacks is appeal. I mean really, think about it. Most gamers will NOT be in the mindset, "SWEET. A STARFISH WITH WATER POWERS" and go buy the game. Ridley, K.Rool, Mewtwo...those are the characters that will draw the hype.

The same could be said for a lot of characters. People who are not hardcore Nintendo gamers are going to look at King K. Rool and say 'He's just a crocodile.' Dixie Kong and say 'She's just a monkey.' Little Mac and say 'He's just a boxer.' Shulk/Chrom/Isaac and say 'He's just a guy with a sword.'

If they aren't familiar with the series, then no **** they won't be excited by seeing them added. That logic can apply to literally every character, the only difference is how big said character's fanbase is. Starfy, while rather niche in the West, has a huge Japanese following and would certainly excite quite a few hardcore fans over there. In the West, he wouldn't be stirring up a lot of hype, but he'd be getting exposure and making his series a bigger world-wide thing much like EarthBound and Fire Emblem before him.

So it wouldn't be a waste of a spot when it introduces another notable series to the Smash Bros. franchise. Not a lot of new IP newcomers can claim to have 5 games under their belt. Only Villager (at 5), Little Mac (with over 7 games), and Andy (whose sub-series alone within the over-arching Nintendo Wars series is almost at 5). Starfy has no Western support, but other than that he's anything but a waste.

Ridley- Would be happy for the fans, and happy to finally see Sakurai 'succeed' with generating his moveset and it'd be a proof he listens to the fanbase. Not much about Ridley himself excites me a lot however.
King K.Rool- Most wanted character since Diddy's reveal in Brawl. Overjoyed and drunk from rum
Dixie Kong- Very happy
Little Mac- T'was expected. Would give him a try though
Palutena- Oh cool she actually made it
Mii- Sales, take a big **** YOU will you? I wouldn't be pleased.
Pac-Man- Really wouldn't care. Brawl Sonic 2.0. Will probably not be played outside of Classic Mode and specific Event Matches.
Chrom- Guess no Roy? Would hope his style gets him appart from Marth's and Ike's enough/
Roy- Guess no Chrom? Happier than with Chrom's confirmation, especially if no Marth clone.
Mewtwo- Second most wanted after King K.Rool. Would try out intensively to see where the buffs at.
Isaac- Extremely content!

Shulk- Wouldn't care much, much like Olimar's reveal in Brawl. Less deserved than Olimar though. If he's cool, might try out Xenoblade even...
Saki- Guns & Swords? Okayy... Cool I guess.
Starfy- Not expected. Would give a few tries. No extreme feelings one way or the other whatsoever.
Krystal- Happy to finally see her actually. Very unexpected, and yes I'd try her a lot.
Tingle- :glare:
Toad- Oh I wish...
Bowser Jr.- Rather would've had Paper Mario, but would try to see the differences between him and Bowser.
Paper Mario- Glorious heaven you granted us the best new Mario character after Toad!
Waluigi- The rage of thousand white hot blinding suns of hateful fury.
Geno- U wot m8? ... Try Geno Beaming...

@GRC

I still have a problem with his inclusion. For every character, there is background to go with them. If a person is unfamiliar with any character, they can go online and find a substantial amount of information on anything. Not to mention, the pictures on the Smash Bros. website show what the character can do, etc...

K.Rool is a crocodile with an arsenal and weapons up his sleeve. Shulk has a glowing sword that has different powers. Palutena can use magic, Mewtwo is Mewtwo...Starfy is a starfish with water powers.

To your average consumer, after the research, Starfy will come across as exactly what he is. A platforming starfish.

However, this point is likely moot. Sakurai didn't see any series besides Pikmin to be a candidate for a playable character, with series such as Golden Sun and Starfy not being given consideration. While you can use Villager to make the argument that he can change his mind, there is evidence to support that Sakurai wanted to make Villager playable. There is no evidence to support Starfy or Isaac having the same situation, and quite honestly, I don't know that much has changed in the least for Golden Sun, as they had one new game that didn't do well, that didn't even star Isaac as the main protagonist. Starfy I can't comment on here.

While it could change, some new game releases =/= getting into Smash Bros. If number of games were a major part of inclusion, then Fire Emblem would have more than what they have right now, and Mario would be taking up half the roster. There are just some characters that are better off being an Assist Trophy, and I believe that Starfy is the type of character that will remain an assist trophy. That's just how I view Starfy. Sorry if that offends anybody.

If we're going to talk about popularity, how about the characters in front of Starfy on the board? You've got Ridley, K.Rool, Mewtwo, Roy/Chrom, Palutena, Little Mac, Shulk...all characters that are more or less likely to get into this game, especially considering we aren't getting as many newcomers this time around.

Again, I really am not trying to rustle anybody's jimmies here. But I just don't see how Starfy stands up to the other characters I listed. Many of those characters are self explanatory for their inclusion, while I have a hard time seeing it in Starfy's case.

However, I still respect the opinion that he should get in. I just completely disagree with it.

Ridley- to the Ridley naysayers:WHO'S TOO BIG NOW!!!
King K.Rool- Yay, I like my Donkey Kong Villain
Dixie Kong- Expected
Little Mac- Cool, just as expected, happy for the people who really enjoy him.
Palutena- One of the Popular 4, so cool.
Mii- May I vomit, now?
Pac-Man- *vomits*
Chrom- *Rage Mode Activated* As I said Many times before "YOU GET NO SYMPATHY FROM ME, CHROM!"
Roy- Glad he's in, but Project M is all I really need for Roy.
Mewtwo- Somewhat same with Roy, but then again Mewtwo is ****ing Mewtwo so YEAH!
Isaac- I've never played GoldenSun, but from knowing nothing about him and still finding him awesome, Yeah, I'm excited.
Shulk- Ehh... prefer Isaac, but still cool.
Saki- indifferent
Starfy- read Saki
Krystal-:bee:
Tingle- Glad for supporters, but afraid of the backlash of the casual community.
Toad-Happy for supporters, but indifferent
Bowser Jr.- Read Toad
Paper Mario- Unique, so, cool.
Waluigi- Oh, Guess what Time it is? Waluigi Time.

Geno- Read Toad

Now hold on there, budd. It sounds like you haven't even put in the research for Starfy yourself. Starfy is a prince that resides in the Pufftop Kingdom high in the clouds. He is neither a starfish nor a star, simply being his own "species" along with the rest of his family. That said, he is not merely a starfish like you (and others who haven't looked into his source material) think he is. Additionally, packing powers of gliding, plenty of variations of spinning, and transformations. No water powers at all, contrary to what you've said, as his spinning moves work just as well on land as they do on water. Not even a little water gun attack like Kirby has in his games. He's anything but "a starfish with water powers."

As for what evidence you have for Sakurai wanting Villager to be playable, please let me know. I hope you're not referring to that time Sakurai listed Villager and Nintendog as examples of characters that wouldn't work, because that essentially means we're saying Sakurai wanted a playable Nintendog, too. Interestingly enough while we're on the subject, the only other Starfy trophy in Brawl, Stapy (or now localized as Starly), is categorized with the other playable series' trophies, which could indeed lead to the idea that Starfy may have been considered at some point as well.

My argument here is not that Starfy is extremely likely for SSB4. Far from it. I fully accept the likelihood that Starfy will not be playable this time. I'm merely saying that Starfy has plenty of warrant and viability to being playable in Smash Bros. I'm sorry if my argument came off as anything aside from that. Between plenty of moveset potential, a surplus of games, notoriety in Japan, and an Assist Trophy in Brawl, Starfy is definitely notable enough to make a place in Smash Bros. Again, it's a matter of other series being in the way of that through either higher veteranship or higher requests. With Starfy having a well-received localized game in 2009 to boot, Starfy has all the more merit this time around.

This is the sort of discussion that I do like.

When I said 'moveset potential' before, I was basically saying that Starfy has a lot of options from his games to choose. And he definitely seems viable for Smash, though probably not too likely in chances.

As said before, I do think Starfy will be on a Smash roster someday though.

Contrary to what you believe, yes, I did look up his game. I couldn't much of anything notable about it.

So he can glide? Charizard, Pit and Meta Knight say hello. So he can spin? Meta Knight and Sonic can already do that, not to mention that several characters spin throughout their moveset.

So he doesn't have water powers eh? I thought somebody mentioned something along the lines of "Starfy has water powers". That's my mistake then. However, I find that even more detrimental to his chances. If what you're telling me is to be taken into consideration, then he sounds even MORE boring than before!

As far as my evidence, that picture of a document with Villager and Nintendog is indeed valid. He didn't use either of them sure, but there was at least evidence left. It's not like that document means 100% that he was keen on the idea of Nintendog. It could realistically mean that he could think of a decent start of a moveset, but the troubles of dealing with PETA (or the world for that matter) made it a terrible idea. But I simply can't say more than that. There is literally ZERO evidence of Starfy being considered as playable. Absolutely NONE. Ignore this. I forgot about the trophy thing.

I will give you that he may be more likely than before Brawl. I completely agree with you. But my points are that:
1) Essentially every character eligible for Smash has moveset potential
2)Starfy still has to compete with a strong pool of characters

I don't think that there are really any absolutes when it comes to something like Smash. But Starfy supporters like yourself (which btw I respect that you concede points that are made instead of being stubborn) do need to realize the competition is substantial still.

But honestly, no I do not expect him in this time. Smash 6? Yea, I could see that.

Reactions to Characters per Swampasaur's game

Ridley would surpirse me. It would be a good surprise. But I all ready went through the mourning phase and accepted the possibility of him being represented simply as a stage hazard. I would no longer be disappointed if he was not playable (as long as the other characters were not ****).

King K.Rool is the one I want in most. He is a schizophrenic Crocodile who likes to play dress-up, steal bananas to piss off monkeys, and murder for hobbies.

Dixie Kong is expected. She would simply surprise me if she was left out.

Little Mac would disappoint me. He punches. Although I have already accepted that he is possible. And I am mildly curious if Sakurai would make him exciting. The star mechanic would be necessary to make him "pop". Otherwise, too bland.

Palutena could be interesting. But that really rests on her moveset. To be fair, there are not many characters this time around that I crave. I am more interested in just how they will play and if I made any movesets; how accurate they would be.

Mii makes sense. Just seems that it would share design and gameplay elements with Villager. Mii is a character that I would feel a little underwhelmed with initially, but if the face could be changed it would definitely add fun to the game. Overall, Mii is probably a clever addition even if mostly a gimmick.

Pac-Man is one of the few characters that I would be excited for. I remember this cool pizza joint, where the glass table was a flat arcade that you could eat on and play Pac-Man. Pac-Man dishing it out with Mario, Sonic, and Megaman just makes sense.

Chrom would possibly be more disappointing to me than Little Mac. Marth is a well fleshed out character that represents the strategic element of his game. Ike is a good counter example of strength over spacing. I feel that Fire Emblem is done. The fans are loud and a good portion seem to be content with five cloned Fire Emblem characters added in each addition.

Roy is not needed. But if there JUST has to be three Fire Emblem representatives, it makes sense for Roy to be one of them to quell that sad Melee fans. At least he has red hair. Which is also sad, if that is the best thing going for you.

Mewtwo would be a disappointment if he didn't have animation changes to the degree that Bowser received. Otherwise, I would be very excited to try him out. And he should return.

Isaac just seems so boring. Well, his design. I would really need to see a creative moveset to determine whether he is a good addition. But looking at him makes me yawn.

Shulk seems like he could add swordplay to the game without being from Fire Emblem. He also seems like he could be a debuffing character. There are many different tactical choices that be made with his moveset. I think he could be somewhat exciting and sword characters usually make me fall asleep.

Saki could be cool. I feel like he possibly missed the boat. Would need to see his moveset to determine if he was worth it.

Starfy would mostly spin? I would initially be disappointed and would have to be won over.

Krystal would disappoint me. Starfox is over-represented with pseudo-clones. While she might not be a clone, Krystal just does nothing for me. Andross with a body should get in over anyone else. Well, he would be the only one from that universe to get me excited.

Tingle might excite me. A battle between him and Wario would excite me.

Toad is dead in my mind, despite rooting for him.

Bowser Jr. would disappoint me. He was a failed attempt at replacing the Koopalings and now the Koopalings are back.

Paper Mario seems to have mechanics and plenty of design space going for him. So I think he could be excited to play as, but admittingly a second Mario is not exciting in of itself.

Waluigi could be fun. But I would initially be annoyed that he took a roster space.

Geno would be a surprise. Maybe a good one, although Mallow would be cooler.

Waddle Dee is just such a bad choice. Kirby franchise is well represented by flavorful characters. No need to add a second rate character with a spear. Yawn.

Oh no. The latest game of The Legendary Starfy exists.

It just doesn't change my stance on him as a character.

Haha. I am not depressed. The Christmas lights are on, the tree I got looks amazing. But some characters just seem so bland.

I really wanted Megaman and not only is he in, but he looks really exciting. Plus he has pretty creative gameplay with half his A moves being projectiles.

Villager also looks fun. And even Wii Fit Trainer excites me more than disappoints.

I just hope this standard of exciting character gameplay continues.
