No previously cut character should be downgraded to an item. It's like saying, "hey so we thought this was a good idea at one point, but clearly we were wrong. But hey, since a lot of you are nostalgic, we'll throw in this half hearted easter egg".

This should stand for the cut Melee veterans, and any potential cuts from Brawl.

What do you guys think are the most likely Playable Assist Trophy characters?
I'd say Isaac, Little Mac, and Starfy...

Pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. Those are probably the most requested Assist characters I've seen around here. Mostly for Mac and Isaac.

But maybe Ray from Custom Robo would be a pretty good choice. Same goes for good ol' Samurai Goroh too honestly. And Saki.

Unfortunately, yes. Yes you are. No wait, like three more people do. Which is a shame, Goroh is kind of cool.

And Saki.
I consider him the 2nd most possible newcomer right after Little Mac.
Sakurai was interested him back in Brawl. He said (correction, he EMPHASIZED) that Saki fit in very well with the rest of the cast, he found him cool, and he said there were many requests for him.

People are just looking the other way when looking at the facts.

Well, that's interesting to say the least. Perhaps he'll consider adding him to the roster this time. Like I said before, he's got an interesting weapon at least. He seems like he'll be a fast lightweight character.

I think people overestimate the chances of a character making the jump to playable. There's no telling what will happen with any of Brawls assist trophies. A majority of them, I believe, are going to reprise their role.

I think the same goes for the so called "Potential Newcomers" which are usually Ridley, K.Rool, Chrom, and Palutena.
Not saying they aren't rightul candidates, they are dubbed "potential newcomers" for a reason... But really, none of us have any evidence, nor a way to actually measure "chances".
But people would do well in taking seriously Sakurai's vision towards this game's character choices. Among them, the little clues he mentioned such as "Bringing unique gammeplay experiences" (aka, non-traditional movesets like Megaman's), "New series", etc.

Of course, not ALL newcomers should respect these rules. There's always room for exceptions.
Just saiying, Sakurai's not THAT into +1ing characters this time.

Yeah, not the pair of characters that was actually planned, the one who was an Assist and had multiple spin-offs, or the first playable iteration of the series' namesake.
It's going to be a second iteration of the villain. While the first iteration remains a clone of a space racecar driver.

I was saying that since Sakurai was planning to focus newer franchises attention, this gives more obscure characters a chance to fight. So the lesser known characters would be playable first, like Saki. After them, we'd get the "+1" characters, like King K Rool.

And MegaMan's moveset is non-traditional in that he uses projectiles for some of his normal attacks.

I would at least want to see a newcomer that will make people stop being so bloody pessimistic.

I really would too. A lot of people need to keep their chins up and ignore the naysayers sometimes.

Honestly, I think that Mudkip/Grovyle/Blaziken should be a thing. Rather, should've been a thing, but:
A) Current Pokemon Trainer isn't getting cut to be replaced by another trainer.
B) There won't be two characters with the same exact gimmick when that gimmick involves having three characters in one.
Another one of those characters that I think have earned their spot on the roster, but will most likely not be included.
...
Like Toad. Or Goroh. Or Tingle.
