This morning, we lost one of our own. This morning, Forest Sharp, known as Solidusspriggan on the Smash World Forums, and his girlfriend were involved in a fatal car accident in Texas during their trip to Las Vegas. The news story is here: http://www.newschannel10.com/story/15022540/fatal-accident-in-oldham-county

Forest, or Solidus as he was known in the Smash community, was an especially active member in the Oklahoma Smash scene. He was a Melee Peach player who had momentarily interacted with the competitive scene during prior years, but had just within this year really joined the OK Smash community. He was my regular team partner in doubles. However, aside from being an active player, he was also very active and important in the community. He hosted OH SNAP 6, the first (and only) three Norman Oklahoma Monthlies (NOM), and was organizing a massive gaming event for August called Super Bit Wars. He regularly coordinated with the Harcore Lan Center to organize events, and his efforts were tireless. Aside from Smash Bros., Forest was an avid gamer with a great passion for quality games; the quintessential core gamer. He was also passionate about Arcana Heart 3 and was working to build a competitive scene for it in Oklahoma. He played League of Legends under the handle "Solidusian Fury." It was his goal for the gaming community as a whole in Oklahoma to be united, and he worked to accomplish this like no one I have ever seen. Forest was a graduate student at the University of Oklahoma majoring in History of Science. He was also the president of OU's Animation Society, working hard to integrate gaming into its events.

Rest in peace, Forest. You will be missed, and your legacy will be carried on.

Forest's funeral will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 9, at Primrose Funeral Home in Norman, Oklahoma.

holy ****, this is surreal. they were definitely too young, i...i have been pretty surrounded by death my entire life but this still doesn't feel any easier. bryan, if you need anything just let me know, if his family needs anything just let us know...forest was really so good for the oklahoma community, an aspiring TO who really cared about expanding and supporting the scene, and a welcoming, great person in general who did a lot for his friends...damn.

RIP Solidus

Wish we could've met back in April.

btw, this is a good lesson for everyone (especially having fallen asleep at the wheel myself), if you're feeling drowsy, DO NOT DRIVE.

This is shocking; I'm very sad to hear this. Oh Snap 6 was an extremely well run tournament (only time I had been to OK), and I always lurked this thread and would see Solidus post. May he rest in peace.

What you meant to us is completely understated with words. There may not even be enough depth in human emotion to accurately depict how sad I am right now, how much more real it feels to understand that I won't see you again.

Thank you Forest, thank you Ashlie for what you've given to us in your short lives.

he was a good smasher and an even better TO. but most of all he was a friend - a good friend - to all of us. he brought majority of us back together when OK smash looked bleak. he housed us, taught us, encouraged us to do everything we could do to broaden the community around us. now that he is gone i almost feel as if i lost a brother. RIP Forest.

- he always knew how to get his order right :D

Man..this is so upsetting to hear. I'll keep you guys in my prayers, and I'm sorry to hear about this. I enjoyed the few times I got to see the man though, and I know he will be missed. RIP Solidus.

I wish you could say everything you ever wanted to to the deceased.. But you can't.. I'm going to try to let everyone in my life know how much i appreciate them and everything they do before it's too late.

Even though I wasn't an OK gamer, this made me tear up because I know how awesome of a person he was and how much he helped out my carpools and my region. If only..

Was at OHSNAP 6, a tournament well run by a passionate TO and, from what I could gather during my time communicating with him, a truly good person.

RIP Solidus.

Reposting what I said on OK Gamers:

I don't know what to say... This is a terrible thing to have to deal with. Forest was, whether you liked him or not, a pivotal figure in our gaming scene. He nearly single-handedly revived the Melee AND Brawl communities in OKC/Norman, and was giving light to those so-called 'niche air-dash fighters' like Arcana Heart 3 and BlazBlue. Super Bit Wars was set to be his magnum opus... This community won't see anyone like him again.

Beyond that, however, he was person-- At times cynical, overbearing, and maybe even a little crazy(but who among us isn't?) stubborn, and a bit obnoxious... However, those were merely symptoms of a man who possessed an indescribable passion for gaming culture and an unmatched desire to unite gamers of every kind under a banner of competition. He and I would often debate about gaming as a whole, and I'll never forget the many games we played together... I remember teaching him about the Peach/Luigi match-up, and watching as he went from getting constantly 4-stocked to eventually being able to beat me. Moments like those are what I will always cherish.

He and Ashlie were the most unique and friendly couple I've ever had the pleasure of making an acquaintance of. Their home was always open to us, even if we were playing a game he had no interest in, he would still entertain us and give us a place to gather and get better. Ashlie, while not as hardcore as the rest of us, was always friendly and welcoming to all these strange people that would frequent her abode. I hope they both realized how lucky they were to have each other, and that wherever they are now, they are still arguing over cosplay choices, lol.

Forest, you will be missed dearly. Not only for your efforts as an organizer, but as someone I call friend. The Smash community is like a close-knit family, and to lose a brother and sister in such a sudden and shocking way is a terrible blow to us. But, I am certain that one of us will step up and carry on the work you started.
Goodbye, my friends. May you both rest in peace.

R.I.P. to both Forest and Ashlie. I didn't really know them at all that well, but they were cool people when we met, especially when they housed us (Dallas-Fort Worth) for OM2.

This is insane. I've never lost a friend so suddenly before.I wish I had gotten to hang out with forest more because he was really chill whenever we did hang out. He contributed so much to the OK smash scene and its surreal to think that we wont ever get to hang out with him again. This really kind of woke me up to how precious life is and it makes me appreciate the fun times that we all share. Forest and his efforts will not be forgotten.

Please guys, if you are going to drive and there is any chance of you getting drowsy, invest 2 bucks into an energy drink or some coffee so a tragedy like this doesnt happen again :(

This came to me as a big shock.

I got a call from Outlaw letting me know what happened at 2:30am and from 10-7pm, everybody at the apple store said I looked horrible. I just cant believe what has happened. I knew Forest, I beat him in a tourny, he came right back at that McDee's tourny and knocked me out. When I thought about this, all I could think about was how mad I was. I look back and see nothing but the pride and joy of an individual that overcame something he didnt think he was able to do. Man he looked really happy when he beat me. I am truly saddened by his passing. Pay$, Shanx and myself played melee in his honor and if I remember the freestyle I rapped in his honor, I would post it on here.

Forest was in fact, as some other people have already stated, the reason why smash continued to grow in Oklahoma. Ive been working so much I havent been able to go to any of the monthlies or tournaments he would invite me to, and now Im regretting not taking a saturday off to go. Such a happy and carefree individual. Im at work right now and I gotta stay its hard to keep my composure in front of all these customers. An iconic figured has passed in the history of melee. Each player has their place in the OK crew but few will have such an influential role such as Forest had.

We really need to do something, we need to rent out a room or something and do a tournament in his honor or a monthly or something. Ill be honest and say Im tearing up right now, I dont wish anything bad on my friends in the OK smash community. Smash was a big part of my life and I still play every now and then. In light of this tragedy, can we all come together and just smash it up just a little bit? If we do a tournament, Ill throw down a prize that you will keep the rest of your life. Ill leave it at that.
