I don’t know if this has been written about as a topic before, and I know not a lot of people are going to read it, but I have been fuming lately and I need to blow some steam.

To start, no one respects a high tier main who resorts to spamming, for either offensive or defensive play. If a MK or Falco main is only capable of jumping and pressing 'B', no one is going to enjoy playing them. Yes, they may do well in online play- but offline, these spammers (who can no longer benefit from any wifi lag) will find that others have simple answers to spam.

How much skill and strategy does it take for one to spam a move with absurd priority, like Mach Tornado? Not much! It is tragic that a character with so many approaching options must resort to spamming a single move.

Rewind and restart. What about low tier characters and spamming? I am a Lucas main, so I will use my character and play style as an example. I play a very defensive Lucas, so when I 'spam' PK Fire- it is not as though I have a choice! Lucas, as a low tier character, does not have a multitude of moves to assist in spacing. PK Fire is almost always his best option when trying to put distance between Lucas and his opponent.

When punishing approaches PK Fire is one of his 3 options (retreating PK Fire, F-Smash, and D-Smash- I am not going to go into his tilts, they are too easily punished). His F-Smash is rather mediocre as F-Smashes go; his D-Smash leaves him open between the frames that hit. What else am I going to do? If I know you are attempting a ground approach, I may try one of the smashes- but they are all easily punished. A retreating Wave bounced PK Fire, however, is much harder to punish. It is not hard to see what is generally the best option!

When I compare Lucas' options at punishing approaches to another defensive character (we will use ROB) - it is not difficult to see all of ROBs options. ROBs D-Smash, F-Smash, Bair (epic!), Robo Beam, Gyro all can be used to punish approaches(I wont go into tilts, because I didn’t with Lucas)- is it still hard to see who has more decent options?

So my question- if I use PK Fire, PK Thunder, and PK Freeze to force people to approach, do I still fall into the category of spammers? When I use retreating PK Fires to space, am I seen as a spammer?

More importantly, if I am viewed as a spammer, is it rightfully so? Or am I correct in stating that some (generally low tier) characters have a limited amount of useful moves, and they must utilize each move to the best of their abilities?

TL;DR? Hope not, thanks for reading if you did!!!

I really don't see you as a spammer. PK Fire will begin to decay, it's not as if spammers are successful players because the moves stale.

The rules of being a spammer aren't set in stone, but I guess you can really pick out the bad ones.

Just pick a secondary that can make good use of it like Kirby or DK.

Spamming is a legitimate tactic. However, it's a tactic that is easy to get around and punish.

The definition of 'spamming' depends on who you ask, but the way I see it, spamming is where a person mindlessly uses a move over and over hoping it works. You seem to be using strategy to decide when you should use it, and that just so happens to be a lto of the time. So therefore, I wouldn't call you a spammer.

Well...to simply put it, you're a spammer, but you're not a bad (or scrub) spammer. Bad spammers are the likes of which you mentioned, where they basically will just spam one or two moves that they think are great the entire game, even when better options are available at times. Examples of characters that bad spammers would use are MK and Falco (Brawl), and Fox and Marth (Melee). The type of spammer that you would be, if it were given a name, would be a metagame spammer; or in other words an acceptable spammer. You spam because the move is your best move at those moments, and it just happens that, because of the way other characters are designed and because of the way your character is designed, you have to use this specific move a lot. A few examples of characters that will generally be acceptable spammers are Wolf and Lucas (I can't think of any really for Melee...maybe Samus and YLink, I guess).

So yeah, you're a spammer. But your spamming is acceptable. No one's really going to look down on you because of the fact that you're forced to spam one or two moves all game when they're your only options.

If your opponent keeps falling for the same attack, why not keep using it? If your opponent resorts to simple tatics and wins then he's the better player. Playing to win :)

"Spam" is a form of field control and can be used as an advanced mindgame actually. A Peach who spams turnips is forcing you to react accordingly, you're then doing what the peach player wants, they have field control. An MK spamming mach tornado may be forcing you to shield it, eating away at it making it easier to shield poke, or perhaps is trying to push you closer to the edge of the stage for a gimp(lolnogimpsinbrawl)

You can do it as a mindgame as well. In melee I like spamming Lasers rather close to my opponent. So close that they tend to use what lag there is in SHL to try and hit me with something strong, but I make sure to stay juuuuuuust far enough away that I can avoid it and punish(This is sometimes called the Azen Mindgame, spamming a move, usually somewhat laggy, like Fsmash, just far enough away that the lag will end before your opponent can actually retaliate but still close enough to make them want to)

TL;DR, spam moar
