Swineape looks awkward, but that's what makes it so good -- it captures Swinub's essence. It's an awkward Pokémon. I think Swineape is the least copypasta of the bunch and it truly captures Swinub's essence, winning my vote.

But why is retaining Swinub's shape a good thing...? Wouldn't a better sprite arguably change Swinub more, rather than less?

Normally you'd be right, however, it stands out as original to me when compared to the other three, because it was the only one that did retain Swinub's shape.

I guess if your definition of 'what's required' is really bass ackwards and silly, suuuure. Doing less work on something without it actually doing anything smart does less to make it stand out as much as it will make people want to ignore because of that exact same fuggin reason.
