Project Melee Online

Hey! :)

I'm just editing my old "melee vault + melee online" thread. I've decided to take on the tedious task of somehow getting melee online. It's not gonna be easy. To understand why i'm doing this, i'm quoting what I had before I edited this thread:

Something else I'd like to cover, is "WHY" I'm doing this. Melee online won't do anything but benefit the community. I agree that a frame-precise game like Melee won't benefit from online play, but it's better than nothing and you also adjust to it. You see, the benefits outweigh the risks. You are able to play people all over the country without leaving your home. You pretty much have access to ANY player 24/7 to play with and get tons better because you're playing more. Though, I do have to agree that nothing beats playing on the console with actual people there with you. I'm not really saying that having a faceless community is better than playing in real life because that's one of the major things in playing Melee...socializing with other people!
Now.. i need to build a team. a team that will help me in this process of getting melee online. if you're really interested, feel free to send me a PM or post here on the thread so that I can send you an invite to the social thread I made.

Here's the order I'm going to try getting Melee online:

1. Melee on the computer by using the emulator "dolphin"

2. Expanded Gamecube PSO hack

2a. Possible Wii hack to facilitate similar PSO hack without the need of the game "phantasy star online"

isn't there a way to use some online capabilities with a GC? anything emulated on a PC for melee is pointless at this point IMO. too much work to figure out for something too many people wouldnt be able to do.

if i could take every hacker from the melee community thats working on different projects, and bring them all together to make melee online happen i would

it is well overdue indeeeeeeeeed! melee online would probably triple the audience and everyones skill would increase dramatically.

Yes there is. It's an old hack using the game Phantasy Star Online, a broadband adapter and a program. The guide on doing this was on a geocities link but geocities got taken down. Luckily, the wayback time machine exists lol.

http://web.archive.org/web/20071020...com/the_psychotic_worm/ssbmonlinetutorial.htm

it's a bit quirky and not that accessible to just about everyone. I've contacted the person who made the program asking for the source (his site states that you can get the source of any of his projects by just asking). If I do get a response, I'll be looking at the code myself and will be handing it out to other people who would be willing to help me.

Is there any feedback over the Melee vault, though? D:

Hey! :)

I got inspired by that person's thread RuKeN to try to create a vault for Melee as a resource for all hacking needs. Think of Brawlvault but for Melee. That can be easily done. I offered to make the site but I don't know if people will actually use it (don't want it to be a waste of my money). Phoenix Lament brought up a good point that the idea of a Melee vault sounds wonderful, but without the hacking community to back it up, it's almost pointless
fixed xD

i wait the help to create this web

making online melee more accessible to smashers would be great even if it lags.

Come on someone needs to make a petition to Nintendo stating that they need to remake Melee online with the listed features like friends list, wii speak, lobby chat, leaderboards, and ranked matches where you can play someone your skill level or above you skill level. Not only can Nintendo make the remake, but make something like this exclusively with the game for the lobby chat. Also I don't want that Brawl wi-fi ****. I want the online to be flawless like Mario Kart Wii online.

I mean come on they remade Mario Power Tennis just for wiimote compatibility, my thoughts were "Are you serious, Nintendo needs to wake the **** up I can't even name a person who plays the remake of Mario Power Tennis for the wii or even has it. If fans were able to get Capcom and Marvel to remake Marvel vs Capcom 2 online, I'm sure the Melee community can.

i'm pretty sure it's alot easier to add in wiimote capabilities to a game, compared to making a game online.

i mean i have a n64 emulator for wii and even that has wiimote capabilities, so i can only imagine how easy it'd be for nintendo to add that in. internet on the other hand is gonna take a lot of coding i'm sure :/

MKWii online is mad laggy. You'd notice if you pay attention to the other drivers ;)

Except Capcom is awesome and actually listens to its fans. It's also worth noting that Capcom isn't the only company to release a classic game updated with online multiplayer for PSN and XBLA. We've never had such a thing for VC, except for Pokémon Snap that let you send images taken to friends via the Wii menu (whoop-diggedy dooh).

nintendo will never remake melee, because about 95% of the smash bros fanbase is in brawl. the competitive community probably makes up 1% of the people who play smash.

this is something i think most people on this board don't understand

Step 1 - Get dolphin emulator with kailerra
Step 2- Get an iso
Step 3 - Play online
step 4 - Curse the lag that prevents you from playing fox/falco/falcon/sheik

Yup.

However, to be anal, a lot more of the percentage of melee players nowadays are probably competitive players; probably even most. Most people who just casually played melee probably just moved to brawl when it was released.

Yeah, too bad Melee cannot be played online with a good FPS rate...

But, I always dreamed of an online mode that's similar to online Poker. I mean, playing money matches online, and where you can choose what amount of money you put on a match, depending on your level, because pros don't really care about 2$ money matches, while beginners are too scared of playing >20$ money matches, which would automatically balance the players' level in every match category.

Somebody feels crazy enough to run such a server? It would be illegal as hell, though, and the host could easily steal everyone's money

If this was all possible, my dream would come true lol

Dolphin has netplay already, so I think the first important thing to getting melee online is to write a client/server pair that would let people connect to a server, find a match, and then the server would negotiate the setup to get past the routers

I actually know how to program, and I'm totally willing to work on something like this. we got any other programmers?

Heres what Im astounded that most posted here dont know, DOLPHIN SUPPORTS ONLINE MELEE. You just have to have the pc and connection to run it with minimal lag

right. so the first thing we'd need to get any significant number of people playing is a netplay arranger. once you've got a basic framework, you can get into trying to make it a little nicer

here's something that you don't know:

Melee online desynchs within seconds. The reason? poorly embedded netplay and the way it's designed to work doesn't work well.

Such a thing already exists. It's called Kaillera. There's a protocol SDK out there to put on programs which can connect to a server running "emulinker".

"but it ds' almost straight away"

"It ds'ed a lot for us too, which is why we only did 2 stocks"

What we have here is a successful online match but I'm pretty sure out of one match that didn't desynch, 5 matches did desynch.

That's something that needs to be fixed.

EDIT: The ability to connect to a Kaillera server was in a couple of Dolphin builds but it got scratched in future builds. In the newer builds, you can only p2p on this thing called "netplay". I'm not too sure if that's kaillera renamed to "netplay" but I've tried it before and it's horrible.
