I'm getting the feeling that lots of people are writing off the complainers as just Melee loyalists, and I think that isn't true or fair. Not being Melee is fine but from what I've gathered so far, a lot of movement options were further gimped from Brawl and defensive mechanics like shields and rolling either stayed the same as Brawl or were buffed. These are all fair arguments about Smash 4, and people complaining about them shouldn't be written off as a blind Melee lover. Saying that certain shield mechanics or whatnot were better in Melee than Brawl and should be carried into Smash 4 isn't being a Melee loyalist too, its simply wanting a better mechanic in the game.
yah this

There are plenty of Melee mechanics that I'm glad won't be in this game. L cancelling*, ledge rolling to hog, invincible ledge dashing and stalling, even dashdancing to be perfectly honest. Smash 64 style DDing would be ideal tho.

* of course Brawl's approach of giving certain characters low lag/good autocancel windows and others so much lag that their aerials are basically useless was no better

All Nintendo has to do if give us E For All 2007 Demo Brawl with it's physics and dash dancing and other stuff people liked. At least start with that as the foundation.

And by asking for Demo Brawl we don't have to mention Melee at all, so no weird debates about if a change would be too Melee-like or not as if that really matters.

Fair enough, but the reason I brought it up is because I feel that a lot of people will right this game off simply based on the fact that they can't perform their ATs w/o giving the game a fair chance to be competitive in its own right.
The game doesn't need the same ATs to function as a decent competitive experience, so long that it's deep enough that there is something under all that "casualization" for the competitive player. I don't have any faith that they will deliver that, but I am hoping. In any case, even if they flop it, PM is still here, so no big deal.

The invitational didn't make the game look very good, but I think that has a lot more to do with just about everything being 4 player FFA and then that obnoxiously disappointing Grand Finals, ending in Sudden Death. If there is anything truly wrong with the game, hopefully they will find it before release, or they will patch it .

In an age where software updates could bring current gen games up to date and keep them feeling fresh, of course, to my knowledge Nintendo doesn't seem to be taking advantage of it. They could have patched extra move tutors into Pokemon X/Y or new events...something, but that didn't happen. I'm assuming any chance they have to force us to purchase new games in order to obtain these things, they will take....yet this is Smash, not Pokemon...so just fixing old problems with new games isn't already a pre-established solution to game problems. Probably rambling by now, so I'll just end with this. Smash 4 looks pretty, if nothing else.

Tried Smash 4 last night. Had a lot of fun. It did feel like a faster Brawl thus far, but if they iron out the stupidity (such as broken characters among other things), I'll be fine with it and I believe that it can easily be a competitive game in it's own right w/o having to clone Melee.

That being said, I'm sure there are already mobs of people announcing the fact that it's not Melee across the globe. Like we didn't already know.
The sooner people realize that it's not melee and it's not gonna be the crazy combo system as melee, the better off your be. Also we dont know whose cheap and busted in Smash 4 right now but once that mug comes out they will be a busted character watch. Also Little Mac is gonna be the new Ike calling it now.

But Ike is already in the game. Lil Mac looks to be fast and potentially OHKO-happy (But only at KO Punch levels), so a comparison to Ike does kinda work though. He doesn't fight for his friends though, unless each win nets Doc Lewis some chocolate.

Can you go in dept as to what was in there,I was still in the hands of the casual side at that time and I wanna know what was up and trying to be fair and logical when it comes to the demo and not trying to bash unlike a big majority of smash players right now?

It's sort of mythical since it was played by a few people at this event (maybe others) and those of us who haven't played it can't really comment on it too much.

But Gimpyfish has a legendary thread about his impressions at the time:

http://smashboards.com/threads/gimpyfishs-brawl-impressions-brawl-talk-episode-1-added.121329/

TLDR: **** ton more hitstun and therefore combos, many that carried over from Melee too. And Meta Knight's brokenness is of course underestimated.

people confuse others' love for melee for love based on execution. most of us don't care about how you wavedash, we just want a movement option similar to wavedashing because movement options are what we love most.

SSB4, in its current stage, will punish you for merely trying to dash, by giving you none of the options out of it. that's kind of ridiculous

I think that's what it basically boils down to: options. In Melee if you wanted to play competitively you could. If you wanted to play casually, by all means go for it. If you wanted to be super heavy on the tech skill double shines shield drop stomp to Falcon Punch, by all means, impress us. The lack of that is what really gets to people. You can't really decide how to play. There's only one way.

That being said, this game looks better than brawl already. Besides weird graphical choices like the blast off rocket smoke that happens under 30%

This is a ridiculous and maybe terrifyingly accurate theory, but I feel like Sakurai nerfed dashing just so you could appreciate the effort put into walk cycles.

Playing PM on the Wii-U game-pad is pretty legit. It makes me wonder, however, how it'll even be possible to play Smash 4 on a 3DS, because that screen is seriously small.

See I don't know how I feel about this design. Sableye deserved a mega but it's not as impressive to me as the other designs. Maybe they should give it long flowing locks like M-Ampharos
Alright, how about this?
-The gemstone shield is unique (and apparently was the gem from its chest).
-Golden teeth!
-It's a creepy little guy hiding and peeking out of something.
-It's Sableye, so it already looked too cool.
-Bald is beautiful!

I like it at least.

-plus Sableye is generally used as support, so him standing behind a giant wall kinda goes with that

That's easy
-Little Mac
-Pikachu
-possibly Villager due to insane recovery options
-possibly Charizard because Charizard
-possibly Palutena

MegaMan and Bowser may also be somewhat broken. I never really saw what Wii Fit Trainer could do, so I don't know if she's good or not.

At the demo we only got to play on 3DS XL's. I think they're trying to tell us something...

But really, as long as you have an XL, you won't even notice. They definitely accounted for small screen size well and adjusted the camera accordingly. But if you have a regular 3DS, well.... your character might be the size of a pea at best. >.>

What exactly do you want to be able to do? I can't comment on the change in edge mechanics because I think they sound interesting, but dashdancing? What's DDing in 64 like that it's ideal?

Smash Bros. 3DS is less than 4 months away, and it's doubtful will depart significantly from the Wii U counterpart also being made in conjunction with the handheld one. A game designer knows resources are more limited when your dividing your time.

It's really not a world away like people saying it's half a year away, they have all the time in the world to work on it!

Hmm I will agree with Pikachu because from what I have seen he has at least a followup from his nair and possibly other aerials

I can't tell about the others but I don't think a "fattie" will be really good, although Zero quoted Donkey Kong was solid and would have been his second choice. I also don't think a kind of "magician" or ranged combat focused character will be good, they tend to have laggy moves and also Sakurai wants to balance a bit for casuals who can barely deal with spam strategies so probably he will be fine if some of the ranged fighters "just get gimmicks".

Uhh... you guys are throwing around the broken term way too much.
Might wanna stop doing that before it loses all of it's meaning and impact.

I mean "good", we'll see if there is a "broken" character but I think the tier difference will be more like in SSB64 which was slightly less than in Brawl and Melee

Ok then. Would a better term be top tier instead?

But really, from what I've seen, at the very least Little Mac and Pikachu are 'potentially' broken. I'm not saying they are by any means, no one has even close to enough data to prove that, but from initial play those two would be most likely imo.

Now whether they are or not, no one can ever know until many months after the release, with tournament placings and what nots. But, all I'm really wanting to say is that they look really good right now.

So DK's Fair in the tree house knocked wii fit trainer out of the air straight down, then bounced them up into the blast zone.

@ Sapphire Dragon Sapphire Dragon , I know you're not a melee-head but I thought you'd enjoy this Lugia themed gamecube that Smurfy EXE here in az is making

Im so super indifferent about Sm4sh right now. I'll play it but i doubt I'll shell out any money for a wii-u.

Guess.
Right now, I feel the same about all the next-gen consoles.

Especially the XB1, because ever since I saw it last year, I basically declared it utterly worthless.

I bought a Wii U for smash 4 pretty much two months ago. I also bought it because I knew I would be impressed with Nintendo at E3 this year.

Right now, I can say that I am extremely glad that I trusted myself to make that decision.
