If you're Scotch at home and wanting to practice and have a Melee disc (or the ability to run 20XX, which now is coming in Memory card form for cubes) but no PM: you should treat them as equal in that you can practice the heck out of both (more so with 20XX) without dismay (depending on your characters).Maybe there's a context I'm not understanding, but are you saying there is no point to learning PM tech unless you know Melee tech at a level equivalent to S2J, Westballz, etc.? Sounds kinda unreasonable, and even if you're only talking about yourself I don't see a downside to you to learning it
But when you learn near every single PM oddity, mastered PM globals (AGTs) and your character's specifics. There's not much you're gonna learn other than cranking at MU specifics yourself, which is the most volatile for change: beyond the character's specifics themselves being changed as well (Juuschichi would want to remove Ike's QD-JC, and could get his way with Diddy's and Wolf's AD-cancel). The more worthwhile thing is just knowing the GENERAL MU from playing other people/characters experience: which isn't the case when this convos about solo practice (OBV. PLAYING WITH PEOPLE'S GONNA BE THE BEST THING)

-I could read and practice Marth CG percents.
-Or I could with Pit research my own, practice them, and them have them thrown out the next version.
- I could watch various Melee tournament high level sequences most people can't execute well (which occur every few seconds at this point).
-Or I could exchange trial videos of tech we came up with for characters few people know what the hell they're doing, find out I'm the only one even making and attempting these trials, and then proceed to have the next version make more than half of them all easily changed/not work.
Also I might have to mention a somewhat obvious point. Practicing say in-depth Falco stuff in PM is gonna be dif. than Melee by a load (and there's no 20XX..). Beyond playing PM Falco compared to Melee's is nowhere as fun starting with aesthetics to the engine. Marth on the other hand has quite a bit of new stuff in PM.
One of the best things about PM is light press air dodge, and that's not in tournaments
