And now I ask you this: why, then, don't they go the freemium way?
As of now the freemium format has gained notoriety due to a lot of factors:
Abuse and exploitation from games like Final Fantasy: All The Bravest, Dungeon Keeper Mobile, Star Trek Trexels, Kim Kardashian Holywood and more by having very little substantial gameplay or content with a lot of paywalls and waiting. This was "parodied" in South Park.
Freemium games also have crossed quite a few lines and have been accused of bribing and manipulating kids into spending all of their parents money, among other things. This was also "parodied" in South Park.
Then again that hasn't stopped some AAA from adpoting the format, even though the game is $60, such as Dead Space 3.
All those games have gotten backlash for doing so.
Assassin's Creed Unity would be another example if the backlash from the unfinished release didn't force them to put out almost all of that DLC for free as an apology.
All this combined has caused hardcore and more dedicated console/handheld/PC/traditional gamers to generally avoid the format like the plague.
Basically, if freemium continues this way, the format will slowly die completely like the rhythmn genre years ago.
Nintendo is pretty much the only company that hasnt completely fallen into that trend yet. Except maybe with mario kart 8. I feel like they could have had at least two more cups in there, but the one's we got were still really high quality
Yeah what Nintnedo is doing great with DLC is good now, but then again, so was the industry(mostly) in 2008/9 when DLC started to become ubiquitous in the 7th gen. I hope Nintendo actually pays attention to the rest of the industry to not fall into this trap of bad DLC practices years later, but then again, I doubt they will....
