likewise, if you drop the "sociopath" card on a genre based entirely around oppressing and mentally dominating your opponent as an excuse for a good option being boring, then I'd recommend not playing, because you're clearly not in the right mindset to play

I was about to ask the same thing because aside from execution/muscle memory/twitch reflexes, fighting games are pretty cerebral in and of themselves, with more than just a little bit of psychology in its methods.

...at least if you make it out to be like that, anyways.

Fighting games are about understanding your options, your opponents options and how they interact. Like most competitive games or sports, it boils down to knowing what to do and when to do it - with fighting games in particular, there's a heavy focus on both mechanical execution of various abilities and having the reflexes to quickly (and intelligently) respond to what's happening in the game.

I would not liken trying to control you and your opponent's options throughout the course of the game to oppression, or winning the game to domination, because I understand what those words mean.

if you don't consider "I intend to control people to do the things I want" to mental oppression then I don't know which terms of sociology you've been looking up

there is no "x is bad and mean, don't ever use them" in a ban-free setting. if something works a thousand times better than anything else, and it wins tournaments, then you either use it, or you don't win tournaments.

You're not controlling people - a good player considers all of the options and reacts accordingly, including things that they can do and things that their opponent can do. That you have the ability, in fighting games, to do things that may make your opponent choose to do something that's actually favorable for you is not the same thing as emotionally manipulating a person into feeling as though they have to act a certain way or else face negative consequences.

The word oppression carries a negative connotation that implies unjust abuse of authority or circumstance to control people in a way that is morally unacceptable.

Oppression is a real thing that actually causes real suffering for people around the world every day - I'm offended that you would claim that your use of the word in a discussion about a piece of recreational entertainment is rooted in "sociology", as though that somehow justifies your lax usage of a word. Don't be lame Bleck, its a game. If you time people out, then you beat the other guy within the rules fair and square. It isn't like anyone is hurt long term.
Just like how tingle runs a legitimate map business and doesn't employ slave labor.
But really, life is too good to waste time about little things like being annoying in a videogame. Letting other people dictate your actions based on how your actions make them subjectively "feel" is more unhealthy, especially in our individualistic western culture. In the west other people will step on you if you don't draw the line and show some spine at some point.

If that were the case, then yes - but it's not, so? The problem with that match isn't so much that the Villager is somehow overpowered so much as it was that both of those players were campy ****lords. I don't think that makes Smash 4 a bad game - I think those players just suck.

Nario was going in hard, he only camped when he had the lead to that ADHD would actually confront him in a position favorable to him.
