I'd just like to say, in the middle of all of this random hubbub, P:M changed everything as far as it came to Smash and I, and I'm glad I tried it out.

It felt way more friendly as far as entry level compared to Melee and while I can now play Melee moderately alright, I'm pretty sure P:M and Customs on Sm4sh is my home now. This game introduced me to a lot of concepts without restricting WHO I could learn them with and succeed with, and I appreciate that a lot. The community was really tolerant of my early posts and attitude (I was a different man 2 years ago, far less experience), and I learned a lot from hanging out here.

God bless. Just wanted to drop this here in case I never made it clear before. Love y'all : )

PM is the only reason I actually acknowledge smash, tbh. I was watching SF4 and someone mentioned project m 2.1 and I was like "oh that looks neat"

Everyone is a pasty nerd til proven otherwise on the interwebs.

EDIT: PM was the sole reason I came back to competitive smash and got outta retirement back in 2013 otherwise I would still be playing SCV as my main FG still.

The thing with P:M and I is that it's one I take more seriously than the others as far as competition goes. I'm well aware all Smash games are valid in some aspects but I firmly believe P:M is the only one 100% designed for it, so obviously I take it a bit differently than the rest.

I stumbled across it on a forum I still go to, just idle mentions of it, saw the new Wario moveset (I was a casual Brawl Wario player before I got serious about all this :O ) and it snowballed from there.

a few other people in this thread and other places theorycrafted a platform fighter before and I know people have been working on one in other places

but what we worked out is if we were to include supers that they would me much more utility based rather than sheer power moves, more like ex's rather than super moves or ultra combos

for example, ex versions of special movement options that burn a charge but revert you to a regular fall rather than a special fall, imagine a fox illusion but you're not helpless afterwords
or things like being able to bypass the charging phases of moves, like having an instant donkey punch, solar beam, or shadowball.
and in the same vein as charging things, we thought that being able to bypass charged smashes would be a good use of meter, ie burn a meter get an instantly fully charged smash
I had that idea too: EX moves for 25% meter.

The main difference my game has from Smash is that it had double the buttons: 2 attack buttons, A and B, and two special buttons, C and D. So instead of just having an ftilt characters have an A-ftilt and a B-tilt. That also would have 8 specials.

Funnily enough, these characters therefore have more moves thean most fighting game characters: 24 normals (2 jabs, 6 tilits, 6 smashes, 10 aerials), the average in Guilty Gear and Blazblue is like around 19 or so even though they have three/four attack buttons.

ALSO going back a ton of pages looking at that whole "Traditional vs. Smash" fighting game thing, my conclusion has always been, in regards to controls, that

Smash
- Simpler controls, more difficult movement/mechanics

Traditional Fighters
- More complex controls and button layouts, streamlined movement.

Input and command complexity varies so much in 2D non-platforming fighters that I find it hard to draw the line on that regard, because you have games like SF with simpler commands and games like KOF with more complex commands at a faster pace.

Dead discussion but felt like I should drop my feels on this as someone who came from the FGC first.

I have never actually played Street Fighter in my life except when my brother and his friends rented SF4 for a few days. I started with anime airdashers like Blazblue (which was my first traditional FG).

I don't hate SF, but I prefer the combos and much more free movement of anime fighters. Funnily enough I used to main Lucario back when I played Brawl casually.

On hit cancel? Well sort of, depending on what fighter it is you can have magic series, basic normal chains, links, normals to specials (this is generally universal). Lucario's system reminds me of Marvel sort of, or maybe to go back further, something like X-Men Children of the Atom.

Never got into anime fighters or modern fighters in general. Anime fighters feel like they rely too much on goofy mixups and weird game mechanics that I can't wrap my head around, and SF4 just doesn't feel...right, to me. I play Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo because it is the definition of fundamentals and it teaches you very good basic player habits.

The dude on the right looks like Bruce Lee fused with WW Ganon and after he stomped on somebody he had a bowel movement right there after all the power he used to dair somebody.

Sound like me later on but replace airdashers with 3d games since I grew up with those in my childhood. Funnily enough 3d games has a bunch of weird stage things that can lead to a stage counterpick system like smash but instead if you dont wanna play on a stage you go random after game 1. This protains mainly to Soul Calibur and a little but of Tekken and IDK much about DOA or VF to fully say on those games.

I've never been able to really get into the more traditional fighters. I dislike the general limit in movement.

That said I still have a bit of an interest in eventually trying to get into at least one traditional fighter (probably Street Fighter).

I'm down with homosexual intercourse. But not with you. We've all seen you naked, and honestly . . . meh.
You ************ you just wait til I'm a few months in to my new DDR and lifting routines you'll be begging me for butt pleasures. And I shall bellow...

So who wants to talk more about SF? I am crawling through the prelim **** and these matches are sooo great, mainly because I get off to watching hype players use char's that would be on their backfeet if it were melee. So far some real sexy DK, Zelda, Pikachu action gettin me rockhard.

I'm hoping this darkblues guy and his tril bowser ha smore than the 2/3 matches I spoiled for myself.

Closest you're gonna get to an "on-hit" cancel system in other fighters is stuff like Roman Canceling from GG. Other examples include Vorpal from UNIEL, Rapid Canceling in BB, and OMB in Persona 4 Arena.

Also, where are the Shots Fired vids?

Man, tier list thread is waaaaaayy to easy to bait
I'd normally be totally super upset but I'm willing to admit you got me mainly because my day has been bad enough that I can laugh at this lol.

Seriously going halfway across the city with a sore, aching shoulder because I slept in an awful position for 6-7+ hours and then realizing class was cancelled and that my ride just left so I had to sit around doing nothing...

Yeah I'll take getting baited over that

It's a Shy Guy, drawn by this guy:
http://mpuncekar.blogspot.com/?m=1
mother of god, a realistic/dark iteration of a shy guy? never in my dreams.

They seriously need to make a serious reimagining of the Mario universe. I wonder if they could do that without like, Mario looking too much like a fat Inuit.

*looks at page* and low-n-behold his art is a mecca for exactly that. Awesome!

SF usually has tight links.

Almost all anime fighters, however, use a cancel system like Lucario's where moves can be cancelled on-hit according to a chain. For instance, in BB the chain is A > B > C. You usually cannot go "down" the chain, except in Melty Blood where you can do that sometimes (it's called "Reverse Beat"). Combos in traditional FG's look daunting but once you remember these chains they become a lot less complex. I mean, you still have to grind them, but hell, in GG like half the cast can do 5P > 5K > 5S > 5D > jump cancel j.5P > j.5K > j.5S which is like the easiest combo ever (actually I just checked and in Reload it doesn't work with Sol, hmm...).

These chains are usually called "gatlings", at least in BB.

Closest you're gonna get to an "on-hit" cancel system in other fighters is stuff like Roman Canceling from GG. Other examples include Vorpal from UNIEL, Rapid Canceling in BB, and OMB in Persona 4 Arena.
l
...?

Those cancels you described are nothing like gatlings. Those let you spend meter to instantly return to a neutral state. The closest thing in Smash is L-cancelling in 64 (since it also eliminates all recovery lag) but at any time with a resource cost. RC's are usually used to make otherwise-impossible combos work by bypassing lag or to quickly end a move in case you screwed up and might get punished.

I should note that I am utter ass at fighting games so don't think I'm an expert or anything, I can't even do combos well (I remember finally getting Scharlachrot's 5A > 5B > 2C >[6HC]> 5A > 5B >[jc]> JA > JB > JC >[jc]> JA > JB > JC and her 5A > 5B > 2C > 2E >[NHC]> JA > JB > JC >[jc]> JA >JB > JC down in Arcana Heart 3 and was all like "OH MY GOD YES" when those are like her easiest combos :V)
