The frigate flip is more than just the flip. It's disruptive. For a brief period, the fight stops. It's like insta-PS1rocktree.

I don't think it's a big deal but lol.

Also, counting timers in your head while trying to outsmart your opponent and navigate a chaotic stage is a bit much, esp since we're not capable of counter perfect seconds lol.

But that's just me.

If people want to play on counterpicks then host tournaments. I just had a PM one last weekend and I made the ruleset have a ton of stages and 4 bans, including things like Frigate/DK64/SSEJungle etc with the purpose of testing the stages in a tournament setting.
Isn't Kongo 64 a bad idea because peach is still in this game? Also MK, D3, Pit, Rob... Hmmm lol...

in terms of transformations, I still think if we modified delfino plaza a bit it would basically be perf

and then replace castle siege w/ it because to hell with that boring-as-balls stage

I would argue that while the flip may be disruptive, players can take advantage of it, unlike the rock and tree; likewise, orpheon doesn't require counting timers as it gives a massive warning before flipping. The stages flashes lights, presents a siren, AND zooms out the camera during the last second prior to the flip.

Isn't Dk 64 a bad idea because peach is still in this game?
Would lowering the two side platforms help..? or at the very least, make it any different camping wise then Battlefield..?

Ok, my take on stages:

1. We tend to have too many stages overall legal. We have CP stages slapped around as legal, and probably will regret the consequences. SSE Jungle in singles? Whyyyyyyyyy

2. We don't have enough viable stages legal. In fact, I'd rather have more "hated" stages on like Metal Cavern, Yoshi's Brawl, etc instead of branching out and trying to be diverse with Delfino Frigate Brinstar RC etc so forth and so on. If having Wario Ware and Yoshi's Melee in the same stage list is redundant, so be it. I don't want to chop one off and then add something completely funky because of some preconceived notion that we can't have too many "similar stages". Give me similar stages instead of bad ones! Please!

3. We need to seriously examine and tune stage boundaries. Ceilings in particular are too standardized. It's a bit ridiculous and it's part of the reason you see Fox run around everywhere for free because everything has too standard of a ceiling. Do we need more Dreamlands? Maybe not, but we should probably get stages with more diverse boundaries. We focus a lot for onstage design, but we need to look at boundaries too to make things better.

Action doesn't stop during the flip if you don't want it to, at one point in this Vista combos me while the stage is flipping:

Yeah, what's more annoying about Frigate isn't 2 people stopping to fight, but a combo or tech chase gone awry because of the flip. It's not a huge deal overall, and I'd rather hate the side platforms on Frigate that extend towards the second transformation. That stuff gets silly.

The side platforms can be taken out very easily with minimal stage hacking. It was done over a year ago.

Then change it?

*starts golf clap*

Edit: Since we're on a new page, I'll reiterate my points on stages and make it smaller:

1. TOO MANY JANKY STAGES!

2. NOT ENOUGH VIABLE STAGES!

3. CHANGE THE DAMN STAGE BOUNDARIES THIS ISN'T AN AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL!

Can someone explain the flip to me in a very explicit, "Minor Pandemic is really dumb" kind of way? The guys I play with freaked out when I turned on Frigate because someone dies to the flip and so we turned it off, and I've not gotten the chance to figure it out myself. All I know is that there are blaring sirens before it happens.

Basically, there is an alarm sounds and the screen starts flashing a few seconds before the stage flips. When the stage flips if you are in the air you are safe from being trapped under it, so you want to jump before it flips.

blaring sirens, flashing yellow lights both tell you to get ready, and then the camera zooms out to let you know that the flip is imminent. Iirc jumping above the centre of the stage when the camera zooms out minimizes the centrifugal force.

Just jump.

I do miss the fun counterpicks from before everyone got so conservative.

boundaries are the easiest thing to change. The issue would be deciding what to change them to. Is there a stage with boundaries that is universally regarded as correct?

I think DMG wants more blast zone variation, more normalization would probably make him change his avatar back to the rock =[

Even if you found that stage, I'm not suggesting making 20 copies of those boundaries. We just need more variation. There was a picture once that showed stage ceilings compared to each other, with the "regular" kill zone set at 100. It showed literally 90% of stages at or under that threshold, with the few obvious ones like Dreamland and FoD higher. That blew my mind a bit, especially considering these new higher platforms, that there's not more variation out there.

I think DMG wants more blast zone variation, more normalization would probably make him change his avatar back to the rock =[
^^^
If I were to make a standard ceiling size, I would probably choose FoD. Something bigger than now, but not massive dream land size.

Less low ceilings please.

What would the benefits of variation be? Stage's boundaries aren't obvious, and having endless variation would require more consideration and technical knowledge for counter picking.

edit*

Make Frigate have a different background that's less scary so I like the stage more (I played the Primes, I still don't care for that stage), but definitely for Lylat's headache inducing background.
mad, you just have all kinds of physical and psychological insecurities don't you
your trigger finger gets tired easily, frigate scares you, lylat gives you a headache
it's like you're pre-pre-pre-johning

I propose that we go by that one ruleset hugs made from the only good topic ever posted in the SSB4 forums

Rule #1: No Items

Rule #2: No dumb*** stages.

Done.

I just skipped 1 year of bull**** upon Smash 4's release, and saved everyone the trouble of hosting stupid *** tournaments with ridiculous rules only to end up at the point we know we're all going to end up at.

For one, a bunch of people think we need to test out stages before we write them off. I have a better system. Here's a quick guide on how to identify a bad stage right off the bat:
1. Is there **** that could kill you without directly coming from your opponent's body? Banned.
2. Can you walk off? Are you serious? Banned
3. Camera can kill you?? **** you, you're ruining tournaments. Banned.
1 year of your life back.

See, stuff like that exists on Halberd, but it's so predictable that all you have to do is not close your eyes. I don't think "stuff that kills you" makes a stage an auto ban as much as "how" it kills you and all the details surrounding that. Generalizations can be unfortunate.

Lylat sucks not because of its edges it sucks because those platforms are so low, dam near everyone has a utilt or usmash that can reach them.

So basically every combo ends up with a platform tech chase somewhere in it. O and then those platforms are so small that "it dont matter" where you tech or roll on them your getting hit anyways, son.

Basically you never want to be on top of those platforms
