You can never fully appreciate someone until he's gone, and goddamn do I appreciate everything Iwata has done.

I went back and checked the OP for more feels and found this.

I too have been there. Debating what makes a game "good" or "bad." If story is important or not, what the "right" way to enjoy a game is. In light of Iwata's death I've been really reevaluating exactly what games mean to me and how they've impacted my life. Now I realize that it doesn't matter how you play a game or if you're the only one who likes it. As long as you're having fun and sharing that fun with the people you love then you're playing the game "right."

As I've gotten older and more analytical I've lost sight of why I love video games. I don't care that I spend my weekends blowing through my backlog or that I spend single Valentine's days revisiting old favorites. Games are fun, and they're what make me happy. And that's what really matters.

Maybe this is what Iwata meant when he asked us all to "please understand."

What is the source of that .gif?
I got it on NeoGAF, so I don't know either...
I just remembered something! I can't do anything, but I know a way of discovering the source... On the Chrome browser on the PC, click on the image with the right side of the mouse! It will have the option "Search this image in Google". There are various pages where the image was used, including other sizes of it. You may find the source!

His passing upset me so much because I have legitimately followed and been interested in the man even before he became an icon/meme in gaming pop culture, before the Nintendo Directs. I first really discovered him when Sakurai linked to the Iwata Asks for Brawl on the Brawl Dojo. And I knew he was an awesome guy right there and then. Even at 12-13 years of age, I could see greatness in him. I have always kept an eye on the man since then, and have always loved his work. He has made the odd questionable business decision, occasionally ones that outright confuse me, but he was honest about his missteps (he literally admitted outright that he didn't fully understand what Western gamers wanted).

Even more upsetting is that the last thing he directly said to fans was that he regrets that we didn't receive E3 2015 too well, and that he will try to better meet our expectations in the future. It pains me to know that in his last moments, he may have had a seed of doubt in him, that we didn't appreciate what he had done, that maybe he wasn't good enough and that was the reason why he had to go. If that was what he thought, then I think it is oh so very important that we prove that seed of doubt wrong, by honouring his memory.

Since it seems to have been coming up a lot, I want to address a controversial point:

I see a lot of people saying "why are you so upset about the death of a man you never knew personally?"

Let me explain - you may not personally know the man, but you DO personally know the work he has done. Pretty much all of us have some connection to what he did, since you would at least KNOW that he worked on a lot of Nintendo products. Not only that, many of you made friends over Pokémon. Maybe you met the love of your life because you both loved Kirby so much and things took off from there. Maybe playing Earthbound helped you cope with the loss of a family member yourself. Maybe collecting Amiibos (Iwata came up with the idea of Amiibos, for those who don't know - he also officially debuted them in the Mii Fighter trailer for Smash last year) taught you a lot about how to handle money and become a bit of a better businessman yourself.

Human bonds have nothing to do with whether you met with someone in person or even if you had any communication with them directly. They are founded on the one thing Satoru Iwata always pleaded from us - understanding.

Of course nobody is effected more by this than his immediate family and friends, but we all understand their pain, understand what Iwata wanted to accomplish and why he did, and we all understand the value of the games he produced. And that is all that matters. That is more than enough justification to grieve, cry, and pay tribute.

Hey, Speedwagon here.....

I only came to say that i asked Chronobound if he could make an write-up about Iwata.
All he said was 2 things:
-1.He's been very busy lately, so it could take him a while(i told him he could use all the time he wanted/needed)
-2.He asked me where he should post it.

I gave him a link to the Roy social thread and this thread i case he wanted to do so, (im not sure if he's going to do it, but im gonna be hopeful) meaning if he's going to do so, it's going to be in either this thread and/or the Roy social thread. If he doesn't, i'll understand his feelings about not wanting to talk about something so tragic.

Hope you don't mind and sorry if i did something wrong.

I just played Classic and Allstar mode in Smash 4 as my Iwata Mii Swordfighter. I was waiting just for the end of the credits just to hit the Iwata box. Iwata, to me is immortalized as a Mii Swordfighter in my Smash game and I consider him an honorary part of the roster. The game he helped create is about Nintendo allstars.

Making a tribute video, should be done in a couple of days hopefully. Don't expect too much though, my editing skills are a bit rusty. :p

And I thought I was done crying manly tears. Now I feel bad for criticizing Nintendo's E3 presentation so harshly.

If you go on Amazon's video game section, there is a little something for Iwata.
Thought I'd post some fanart.
First one tore me apart.

It's OK to be critical. Really the only people who should re-evaluate their reception to the E3 2015 showing Nintendo had were those who were mean-spirited about it.

I myself stand by that E3 2015 wasn't Nintendo's brightest moment, even though I enjoyed it. However, it really has nothing to do with what I think about Iwata as a person.

Boy was I shocked when I heard about Iwata-san's passing. He was only 55, that's awfully young, but at least his suffering from his cancer is over. My dad died 11 years ago from cancer, and I will never get over it. I only hope that Iwata-san will share his creative genius with his new friends in heaven. R.I.P. Iwata

I declare July 13 to be Iwata Day. A day where we don't just remember the life, career, and legacy Satoru Iwata has left behind, but we remember what it is to be gamers and what the true meaning of a video game is. Where all speculation and console war talking stops, and we just talk a look back at all the fond memories gaming has brought to us. Iwata always wanted for us to understand but he never told us what. I think what he wanted us to understand that all gaming is, is fun, fun for everyone.

@ Swamp Sensei Swamp Sensei Can this actually be a thing every year on Smashboards. Like an official Smashboards event. Just wondering.

It's gonna sound weird and all, but I'd vote for either his birthday (December 6th) or the day he died (July 11th)

You simply can't pick a random day for an event :glare:

Today was the day everyone stopped and took a look back at what Iwata did and how he affected us all (well it was yesterday late at night so I thought today was better) I could go with his birthday or date of death too.

Gaming has lost one of its most brilliant and innovative minds.
The impact that this man has had on ALL of our childhoods, the impact he may have on our children's childhoods, the innovation he brought to an industry we love, can never be put into words.
I have always loved Nintendo because of the 'magic' that seems to infuse their games. In an industry full of blood-soaked violence, Nintendo always put things in a different light. As a Twitter post put it: 'He brought COLOR to an industry that could only think in brown and gray."
The next time you pick up a Nintendo game, whether it be a new title or an old favorite, know that he poured his heart and soul into everything he did.
R.I.P. Satoru Iwata. You are loved. You are missed.

I thought this was very sweet of Ubisoft Brazil to do.

Can anyone translate the text for everyone to read? Do we have any Brazilians?

I punched that into google translate and cleaned up the sloppiness inherent in those programs. This is what I got:

This is a sad week for everyone who loves video games. Satoru Iwata, thank you for everything!

EDIT: Cleaned up the translation to read better.

I still can't believe they went the extra mile and made something for them. Just goes to show how important Iwata was.

This is very heartbreaking news. Iwata had a significant impact not only on Nintendo, but on the childhood of many people as well, including mine. He seemed like such a friendly and kindhearted guy, but also with a fun side... I'm still at a loss of words here, especially since everything happened so suddenly. I finally had some time to finish a little collage I was working on before in tribute to Iwata. It's also easier to express myself with something like this...

Here's a link to the pic since it's large: http://i.imgur.com/h3xQdE1.png

Nintendo won't be the same without him, but I'm thankful for the hard work he's done for Nintendo, all the games he worked on, and impact he had on the gaming industry in general. So, let's continue having fun playing video games, just like Iwata would have wanted.

My condolences goes out to his family, friends, and coworkers. R.I.P. Satoru Iwata. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

And thanks for the ribbon @N3ON. I saved ya some time by editing my own avatar.

I am Portuguese, so I understand what they're saying.

"The week began sad for those who like video games. Satoru Iwata, [we] thank you for everything!"
