so if i get 1st at a tournament with over 30 people, but none of them are "ranked", does that mean i get 0 credit for it on the rankings list? not that i care, i just wanna know how it works. is it like, based on how you place, with a "strength of tourney" factor? or is it more based on who you beat and who you lose to? or perhaps a % of both?

Greg: three weeks ago I won a tournament with 92 people. It had FFA for two rounds followed by 1v1, with items and random levels. I think we can all agree it counted for nothing except a confirmation that smashboard players are far superior in all walks of smash than nonsmashboard players.

It is more about who you beat than anything. If chu/azen are the only two players ahead of you and you win a tournament without either of them present, unless you happened to have beaten mew2king/pc chris/ken/koreandj, then there is no consideration taken in moving you up.

The weight of a tournament is almost completely arbitrary. For example, chudats biweeklies, at least in my mind, carry very little weight even though quite a few great players attend. However, a tournament like c3 carries much, much more weight. Does placement matter? Yes, but that is usually a biproduct of also beating good people, the two go hand and hand. If you don't beat anyone good you probably didn't do anything to warrent moving up. By the same token if there is a person one position ahead of you and you beat them but lose the very next round, your placement may not have been impressive but your lone victory over a closely matched foe may be a separator (enough to boost you above them).

I doubt it would matter much. Given the amount of times that good players beat and play other good players, you have to realize that any of them could be having bad days and would off there game for various reasons. You can't really complain about, just try to do better next time. What matters most is consistency I would think. Did you win because your oppenent was off or not. This kind of question has less impace when you look at someones tourniey results over a period of time.

So yes, you could say that so and so got lucky vs azen, p.c, m2k, etc, but if that person wins consistently or places high consistently then the results will speak for themselves regardless of crappy playing here and there.

that's stupid, consistency should matter too. What if someone loses to people because they have an off day, is that taken into account.
How is it stupid? I didn't say consistency wasn't a factor. By saying its stupid your saying that my entire arguement is wrong, so I guess we shouldn't be making a list based on who beats who (which actually is stupid). We look at everything, including past history, but certain things have more impact and in a match up that goes back and forth why shouldn't the most recent tournament performance take priority? I had an off day? John. But even so we do look at how we think someone is playing, just like if someone has an "amazing day" we aren't going to sky rocket them to first, by this same token we aren't going to lower someone significantly (ie more than two positions if you are on the top 5-8 or so people on the list) for what could be an "off day". However, in matchups that are close, say yourself and koreanDJ, than EVERY matchup carries significant weight, especially when you play so seldom, an "off day" by your terms could completely discredit what could have been 3 months of hard work by someone to improve to beat you.

2 weeks ago at chus, there was nearly 60 entrants. C3 had like 92. EGL the week before had about 64. chus and C3 usually have around 30-40 peeps. id say they are somewhat equal. C3 just has bigger entry fees and more payouts.

p.s. @ m2k, the rankings should go in order by who has the least "bad days".

We looked at C3 and at EGl for the last rankings, in addition to MLG's.

Chu's Smashfests have a problem because they are well...fests, I've heard from more than one good player that they don't take it seriously or really care about the outcome, heck, was the last one even played out?

I put consideration into Biweeklies.

You have to understand that most of the panelists go by their own system when determining placings. That usually makes for a good debate, if everyone went by the same system then there would be very little debate and even less option for change.

I look at who beats who, then tournament placings/consistency of placings, then overall tournaments attended and traveling/overall skill judgement.

Mew2King: I don't understand your arguement. We broke down why you are placed where you are placed citing evidence, you didn't even try to debunk or debate it, and now pages later your only response is "I lose to 3 people...". Do you feel you should be 4th instead of 5th? All you would have to do is beat KoreanDJ to do that (making KoreanDJ lose to 3 people and you only lose to 2 people), because everyone else above you essentially only lose to 2 people, not 3.

And I know what your thinking: Azen lost to Drephen, Chu lost to Doll, etc etc. We will look at that for the next list. Except, based on your previous post, we can discount both those loses because of "off days".

Green/White ranger > Red ranger.

NOTE:: Mods, this is not spam, because if this is spam this whole topic should be closed. Also, may other threads should be closed as well. Stop picking on me cause I'm black.

Thanks Tope, that's why I respect you, you're not so strict and you give fair warnings. Same with Ken, cause he just edited my post to be more spam-like.
