Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said."

It doesn't look like foul play, just an accident.
R.I.P to all them, and condolences to their families.

Its a tragedy for sure, but one thing is troubling me. After the shaky relations these two countries have had in the past few years, why did they put almost ALL of their high ranking officials on ONE airplane?

I'm kind of curious about the mechanics of the situation though. You'd think they'd have some kind of plan in the event of plane failure to prevent everyone from dying, since they're all such V.I.P.s. Maybe have parachutes on board with some guy who knows how to operate them. And you'd imagine they'd triple-check out the wazoo and have backup after backup for the system itself.

ive always thought people coming from the same area and going to the same area who took different planes, some of which carried few people, were stupid...i thought it was a waste of money.

man, i feel stoopid. this is exactly why they travel in seperate groups. i cant even imagine the possibility of that happening here, losing a high percentage of our govt. chaos must be building along with tensions.

so many people all over dont understand the concept of this way of travel; to them, and formerly myself, it was just a way for luxury. im glad i get the govts reasoning now. i guess the reason i was unaware is bc things like travel is not assumed to be part of history and isnt touched on.

wondering if they didnt have enough fuel to travel to another airport to land, one where the fog had lifted. seems to have been a stubborn pilot.

WWIII anyone? Poland and Germany sarted WWII, so maybe poland could start WWIII. Doubt it will happen though, but if is does, USA please stay nuetral. We're fighting 2 wars already, like we need to get in 2 wars AND a world war. Poor Poland though, I'm like 75% Polish.

...where's all this talk of a war coming from? Poland is a stable country that posted positive economic growth and is part of the EU. It's like bringing up the topic of cereal when the discussion is about coal mines.

They can lose a lot of stability due to this traumatizing event.

Now that they basically lost most of their government, this leaves them open to invasions and a possible World War III. Now granted, this is slim, but they have been invaded before (AKA by Germany RIGHT before World War II).

Well, terrorist groups could attack it. But hey, isn't this "War on Terror" a world war anyways? Poland's gotta watch out for the "Axis of Evil", as George Bush used to put it. So, if terrorists attacked Poland, the War on Terror would become Terrifying.
